LA CROSSE, WIS.  (VCSU) – The VCSU women’s basketball team utilized a late surge Saturday to pick up a conference win over Viterbo University, 70-64.

The Vikings held the V-Hawks to just six points in the third quarter as they regained the lead for good Saturday. Viterbo’s attempts to gain late possessions were not quite enough as Valley City State went 11-for-12 on free throws late in the fourth quarter to seal the road victory.

Valley City improves to 6-9 on the season and 4-1 in the North Star. Viterbo falls to 6-10 overall and 3-2 in the NSAA.

UP NEXT: Valley City State hosts Trinity Bible College on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The women are scheduled to tip at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Caleb McConnell had 10 points and 12 rebounds as Rutgers used a balanced team effort in a 64-56 win over Minnesota to continue the program’s best start in the Big Ten, and possibly an AP Top 25 ranking for the first time in over four decades. After starting 1 of 10 from the field and letting Minnesota go 4 of 5, Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell called a timeout 3:30 into the game and his team down 10-2. Whatever was said in the huddle sparked a turnaround. Daniel Oturu led the Gophers with 19 points.

UNDATED (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs have earned trips to Miami for Super Bowl 54 on Feb. 2. The Niners are heading to the game for the first time since 2013, while the Chiefs are ending a half-century Super Bowl drought.

The 49ers cruised to a 37-20 win over the Packers behind Raheem Mostert, who ran for 220 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries. Mostert already had 160 yards and three TDs by halftime to help San Francisco take a 27-0 lead into the locker room.

The Niners racked up 285 yards rushing while Jimmy Garoppolo (gah-RAH’-poh-loh) threw just eight times, completing six for 77 yards.

Aaron Rodgers couldn’t get Green Bay into the end zone until the first series of the second half, hitting Aaron Jones for a nine-yard TD. Jones also scored on a one-yard run.

Rodgers completed 31 of his 39 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns, but one of his two interceptions set up a Mostert TD just before halftime.

The Niners are the third team to make it to the Super Bowl a year after winning four or fewer games, joining the 1988 Bengals and 1999 Rams.

Pat Mahomes (mah-HOHMZ’) scored on an acrobatic 27-yard run just before halftime and the Chiefs held NFL rushing leader Derrick Henry in check to complete a 35-24 win over the Titans in the AFC championship game. Tennessee led 17-7 until Mahomes led two touchdown drives over the last 4:03 of the first half, beginning with his 20-yard scoring strike to Tyreek Hill. The NFL’s reigning MVP followed that with a long TD run in which he tip-toed along the left sideline and squirmed through a wrap-around tackle attempt near the end zone.

Mahomes put the Chiefs in control by hitting Sammy Watkins for a 60-yard touchdown with 7:33 remaining. Mahomes finished with 53 yards rushing and was 23 of 35 for 295 yards and three TDs.

Henry scored on a four-yard run that gave Tennessee an early 10-0 lead, but he finished with just 69 yards on 19 carries after gaining 182 and 195 yards on the ground in the Titan’s first two postseason games.

LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Andrew Landry regrouped to win The American Express after blowing a six-stroke lead on the back nine.

Landry broke a tie with Abraham Ancer with a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th hole and made a 6-footer on the par-4 18th for a 5-under 67 and a two-stroke victory.

In world and national news…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Police in Kansas City, Missouri, say at least two people are dead and upwards of a dozen people may have been injured in a shooting outside a bar. Police say the shooting took place just before midnight, when someone opened fire on a line of people waiting outside. A man and a woman were found dead at the scene. Police believe the man was the shooter, who was shot by an armed security guard. At least 15 people arrived at local hospitals with injuries and three are in critical condition. The bar appeared to be celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ advancement to the Super Bowl.

BEIJING (AP) — China has reported a sharp rise in the number of people infected with a new coronavirus, including the first cases in the capital. The outbreak coincides with the country’s busiest travel period, as millions board trains and planes for the Lunar New Year holidays. Health authorities in the central city of Wuhan, where the pneumonia appears to have originated, have confirmed more cases, raising the total to more than 200. And a third patient has died, bringing the death toll to three. Thailand and Japan identified three cases among people who recently traveled from China. South Korea reported its first case, a woman who arrived in Seoul from Wuhan and is now hospitalized.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Dust storms, hail and flash floods have battered beleaguered Australian cities in recent days, extreme weather that has diminished the threat from scores of wildfires that continue to blaze across the country’s southeast. A hail storm in the national capital Canberra on Monday damaged public buildings, businesses, homes and cars, cut power to some suburbs, brought down trees, caused flash flooding and injured two people. To the west, a huge cloud of red dust descended on the drought-stricken towns of Dubbo, Broken Hill, Nyngan and Parkes. Hail struck Melbourne on Sunday and more hail storms are forecast to return. Unusually intense storms over the weekend caused flash flooding in the cities of Brisbane and Gold Coast.

BERLIN (AP) — A German-Afghan man who worked for years as an interpreter and adviser for the German military has gone on trial on charges of spying for Iranian intelligence. He is charged with “a particularly serious case” of treason and with breaching official secrecy laws in 18 cases. Prosecutors have given few details of the case. Media and the public were excluded from the trial at the Koblenz state court before the indictment was read on Monday. The man’s wife has been charged with being an accessory to treason. A defense lawyer says neither has responded to the charges.

PARIS (AP) — Paris commuters are finding their smiles again after some striking subway workers decided to end their walkouts against a contested overhaul of France’s pension system. After six weeks of misery-inducing transport strikes, there was a marked improvement in subway and train services in the French capital. Trains were more frequent and less crowded on lines that had still been nightmarish last week. The improvement followed a weekend announcement by the subway wing of the UNSA union of a return to work after 46 consecutive days of strikes. But not all strikers voted to return to work. Disruptions continued on some subway lines.
