UJ Women’s Basketball

SIOUX CITY, Iowa– No. 7 Morningside (Iowa) College used a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter Saturday to build an 11-point lead and thwart a comeback attempt by the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team, defeating the Jimmies 74-60.

Noelle Josephson (SO/Ramsey, MN)’s layup made it 54-53 in favor of the Mustangs with 9:06 to play, but the home team responded with 10 straight points to go ahead 64-53.

Jamestown was able to get within seven points following a basket by Hannah DeMars (FR/Grand Rapids, MN) with 3:25 left, however it was the final points UJ scored. Morningside finished with the game’s final seven points for the 14-point victory.

The Mustangs opened the game on an 8-0 run before taking a 10-2 lead. An Emma Stoehr (JR/Woodbury, MN) three-pointer sparked 11 straight UJ points as Morningside went nearly four and a half minutes without a point.

Trailing 19-15 after the first quarter, Jamestown kept the game close in the second and faced a six-point deficit at the half.

Paige Schmidt (SR/Tappen, ND) led the Jimmies (16-12 overall, 9-11 Great Plains Athletic Conference) with 11 points. Kia Tower (FR/Bigfork, MN), Mackensi Higlin (JR/Mandan, ND), and Courtney Mosloski (SR/Fairmont, MN) all had eight points off the bench. Josephson had a team-high eight rebounds and five assists.

Next up for the Jimmies is their final regular-season road contest Wednesday at Briar Cliff (Iowa) University. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

 

UJ Men…

SIOUX CITY, Iowa– The top-ranked Morningside College Mustangs used a 66-point second half and shot 63.5 percent from the field Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Jamestown men’s basketball team 111-85 in Great Plains Athletic Conference action.

Jamestown (18-10, 9-9 GPAC) is at Briar Cliff (Iowa) University Wednesday for their final regular season road game.

The Jimmies shot 50 percent (32 of 64), including 11-of-24 from three-point range, but the Mustangs knocked down 40 of their 63 shots, 16 of 30 from beyond the arc.

Morningside took an early 17-12 lead, but a Devan Praska (SO/Thompson, ND) three-pointer capped off an 8-0 run that put the Jimmies ahead 20-17. UJ took its biggest lead of the half following another three-pointer by Jack Talley (JR/Sioux Falls, SD) made it 30-23.

The Mustangs scored points on their next seven possessions to lead 38-32 with 3:32 before halftime and eventually took a nine-point lead into the locker room.

A 17-7 run to open the second half pushed Morningside’s lead to 19, and the Jimmies would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Mason Walters (FR/Jamestown, ND) had 21 points and five rebounds off the bench to lead UJ. Isaiah Dobson (SR/Stillwater, MN) scored 17 and passed out five assists while Talley finished with 15 points and five rebounds.
