barnesmuseumValley City (CSi)  The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 18 Presents: Dr. Gilbert Kuipers (Valley City State University): “Global Climate Change & A Personal Adventure” 7 PM Thursday, September 17 at the Barnes County Museum.

September 17th should be the approximate date of the arctic ice minimum for the year.  We probably won’t break the 2014 record, but should be somewhere in the lowest six.  According to Pope Francis, “The specialization which belongs to technology makes it difficult to see the larger picture. The fragmentation of knowledge proves helpful for concrete applications, and yet it often leads to a loss of appreciation for the whole, for the relationships between things, and for the broader horizon, which then becomes irrelevant.” This presentation will try to piece together a variety of aspects on the subject of global climate change.  The presenter is not Roman Catholic and the scheduling of this presentation began before Pope Francis’ encyclical was announced.   The traditional fundamentalist Protestant approach is a particular interpretation of Genesis and Matthew, but is there an alternative view of these?  The science and history of climate change will be included.

Gilbert Kuipers grew up in Georgia and attended college there.  He has been at Valley City State University since 1981.  Although he mainly teaches physics, at VCSU he has taught math, chemistry and computer classes.  He has an interest in history and would be interested in hearing from anybody who can provide information about the cornerstone of Vangstad Auditorium.

The public is cordially invited.
