RobertsDave LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Dodgers have officially introduced Dave Roberts as the first minority manager in franchise history.

The former major leaguer slipped on the No. 30 jersey offered by co-owner Magic Johnson on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.

Roberts says it’s a “huge day” for him and he’s eager to get to work for a team that hasn’t won a World Series since 1988.

Roberts has begun the process of getting to know the players, having spoken to about 15 of them already. He’s set to spend Sunday with ace Clayton Kershaw.

The 43-year-old former center fielder comes from the San Diego Padres, where he was bench coach the last two seasons. Roberts started for the Dodgers from 2002-04. He played college baseball at UCLA after growing up in the San Diego area.

First baseman Adrian Gonzalez and Dodger greats Don Newcombe and Maury Wills were on hand.
