Bates (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/index.php?title=John_C._Bates&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">John C. Bates<\/a>&nbsp;of the&nbsp;<a title=\"20th U.S. Infantry (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/index.php?title=20th_U.S._Infantry&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">20th U.S. Infantry<\/a>&nbsp;to provide protection for the construction of the Northern Pacific Railway. The fort was initially named&nbsp;<a title=\"Camp Sykes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/Camp_Sykes\">Camp Sykes<\/a>&nbsp;after Colonel&nbsp;<a title=\"George Sykes (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/index.php?title=George_Sykes&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">George Sykes<\/a>,&nbsp;<a title=\"20th U.S. Infantry (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/index.php?title=20th_U.S._Infantry&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">20th U.S. Infantry<\/a>&nbsp;and later designated&nbsp;<a title=\"Fort Cross (1)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/Fort_Cross_(1)\">Fort Cross (1)<\/a>&nbsp;on 7 Sep 1872 after Colonel&nbsp;<a title=\"Edward E. Cross (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/index.php?title=Edward_E._Cross&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Edward E. Cross<\/a>,&nbsp;<a title=\"5th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/index.php?title=5th_New_Hampshire_Volunteer_Infantry&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">5th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry<\/a>, who was killed at Gettysburg, 2 Jul 1863. Finally, on 9 Nov 1872, the name was changed to Fort Seward after&nbsp;<a title=\"William H. Seward (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/index.php?title=William_H._Seward&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">William H. Seward<\/a>, Secretary of State under President Lincoln. Bates (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/index.php?title=John_C._Bates&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">John C. Bates<\/a>&nbsp;of the&nbsp;<a class=\"new\" title=\"20th U.S. Infantry (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/index.php?title=20th_U.S._Infantry&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">20th U.S. Infantry<\/a>&nbsp;to provide protection for the construction of the Northern Pacific Railway. The post was situated on a bluff overlooking the confluence of the Jamestown River and Pipestone Creek. Fort Seward was a three Company post with about 120 men from the&nbsp;<a class=\"new\" title=\"20th U.S. Infantry (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/index.php?title=20th_U.S._Infantry&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">20th U.S. Infantry<\/a>&nbsp;stationed there. It guarded the Northern Pacific Railroad bridge crossing the James River and the railroad construction workers.<\/p>\n<p>Captain&nbsp;<a class=\"new\" title=\"John H. Patterson (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/index.php?title=John_H._Patterson&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">John H. Patterson<\/a>&nbsp;commanded Fort Seward from October 1873 to September 1877. It was under his command that the fort was dismantled and sent north 81 miles to&nbsp;<a title=\"Fort Totten (1)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/Fort_Totten_(1)\">Fort Totten (1)<\/a>. The flag was hauled down at the fort the last time at noon on 30 Sep 1877 and the troops began the march to&nbsp;<a title=\"Fort Sisseton\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/Fort_Sisseton\">Fort Sisseton<\/a>, Dakota Territory the next day. The military reservation was transferred to the Interior Department on 14 Jul 1880 and the site fell into private hands.<\/p>\n<p>In 1925 the Northern Pacific Railroad deeded a potion of the site to the Historical Society of North Dakota and in 1969 another parcel was donated by the Lutheran Hospitals and Homes Society of America.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Current_Status\" class=\"mw-headline\">Current Status<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"thumb tleft\">\n<div class=\"thumbinner\">\n<p><a class=\"image\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/File:Fort_Seward1_-_19.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbimage\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/images\/thumb\/a\/ab\/Fort_Seward1_-_19.jpg\/200px-Fort_Seward1_-_19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"thumbcaption\">\n<div class=\"magnify\"><a class=\"internal\" title=\"Enlarge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/File:Fort_Seward1_-_19.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fortwiki.com\/skins\/common\/images\/magnify-clip.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Fort Seward Interpretive Center<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>No buildings remain on the site but the locations of some of the buildings are marked with stone cairns and markers. Three markers and some signage identify the site.
