Update… Jamestown (CSi-AP)\u00a0 The Jamestown City Fire Department was called out at 2:51 p.m., Tuesday, to a report of a chemical spill of flammable Magnesium powder, at the high school science lab, in Gackle.<\/p>\n
The Fargo HazMat team was also called to the scene.<\/p>\n
Logan County Emergency Manager, Daniel Schwartz says the Gackle-Streeter Public School was evacuated, after the spill occurred in a closet in the science lab.\u00a0 The closet was closed after the spill, as the Fargo HazMat team\u00a0arrived at\u00a0the school shortly after 5-p.m.<\/p>\n
A teacher and student reported hearing a “popping” sound in a storage cabinet.<\/p>\n
Schwartz says the evacuation was necessary, as there was a risk of explosion if the powder would have come in contact with moisture or a heat source. School officials also shut down mechanical and electrical systems as a precaution.<\/p>\n
Jamestown City Fire Chief, Jim Reuther says, Jamestown served as backup, as the Fargo team\u00a0entered,\u00a0 retrieved, and sealed\u00a0the originally \u00a0glass bottled magnesium, in a can, \u00a0and removed\u00a0 it from the school, finishing just after 5:30-p.m..<\/p>\n
Reuther estimated the bottle, which\u00a0was discovered, broken\u00a0had under a half pint.<\/p>\n
Logan County Sheriff\u00a0Andrew Bartholomaus reports no injuries.<\/p>\n
Classes at Gackle-Streeter will be on the regular schedule, Wednesday.<\/p>\n
