The North Dakota Department of Health urges residents, especially<\/p>\n
those with respiratory conditions, to consider limiting prolonged<\/p>\n
outdoor activities while smoky conditions remain across North<\/p>\n
Dakota.<\/p>\n
Wildfires along the West Coast and in Montana, Idaho and Canada<\/p>\n
are sending smoke across the state. Particulate matter consists of<\/p>\n
extremely small particles of ashes and soot found in the air.<\/p>\n
Particulate matter can be irritating to the respiratory system,<\/p>\n
especially for those who suffer from chronic COPD, asthma, and<\/p>\n
allergies. The North Dakota Department of Health advises people<\/p>\n
with respiratory conditions, the elderly and young children to<\/p>\n
limit prolonged outdoor exposure. People reacting to smoke to the<\/p>\n
extent that it is affecting breathing should seek immediate help<\/p>\n
from a medical provider.<\/p>\n
Except for northeastern North Dakota, ground-level particulate<\/p>\n
concentrations are currently decreasing in the state. However,<\/p>\n
satellite imagery and fire conditions show increased<\/p>\n
transportation of particulates in the upper atmosphere. Elevated<\/p>\n
particulate numbers may become a concern as upper atmospheric<\/p>\n
conditions change.<\/p>\n
