{"id":153497,"date":"2018-09-18T11:23:23","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T16:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=153497"},"modified":"2018-09-21T23:12:35","modified_gmt":"2018-09-22T04:12:35","slug":"edward-ed-spitzer-sept-15-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=153497","title":{"rendered":"Edward Ed Spitzer &#8211; Sept 15, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"node-body\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 16.5pt;\">Edwin Ed Spitzer, age 94, of Valley City, ND, died Sat Sept 15 at\u00a0 Sheyenne Care Center.\u00a0 A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, Sept 21 at St. Catherine\u2019s Catholic Church in Valley City.\u00a0 Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at St. Catherine\u2019s Catholic Church.\u00a0 A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the church.\u00a0 Interment will be in St. Catherine\u2019s Catholic Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 16.5pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Edwin \u201cEd\u201d was born on June 11, 1924, the second of five children (three sisters and one brother), to parents, Johanna (Scheirer) and Andrew Spitzer in Bismarck, ND.\u00a0 There he spent his childhood in education, delivering papers and later as a caddy at the Bismarck golf course.\u00a0 He spent two years in the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC\u2019s) in Minnesota, fighting forest fires.\u00a0 On April 6, 1943, at age 18, he was inducted into the US Military Service.\u00a0 He was in the 17th Airborne Division and served in the European Theatre.\u00a0 At the end of the war, he returned to the US on the Queen Mary and marched in the NY Victory Parade.\u00a0 He was honorably discharged from service in January 1946.\u00a0 He relocated to Jamestown, ND with fellow Army buddies.\u00a0 June 11 (his birthday) of that year, he was admitted to Trinity Hospital in Jamestown with a severe case of spinal meningitis.\u00a0 He spent 46 days recovering.\u00a0 September 22, 1947, he married Madeline \u201cSonny\u201d Sondag, his former nurse at St. John\u2019s Academy chapel. They became parents to five children; son, Loren; daughters, Connie Marie, Jean Marie, Lynn Marie, and Carol Marie.\u00a0 The family relocated to Valley City, ND in the fall of 1949.\u00a0 He purchased and operated a service station (Ed\u2019s Texaco) and worked 33 years before retiring.\u00a0 He was meticulous with clean cars, garage, and a manicured lawn.\u00a0 Ed belonged to the Elks, Eagles, American Legion, VFW, and the Valley City Town and Country Club.\u00a0 He was active in golf and bowling.\u00a0 He watched football (MN Vikings) and baseball (MN Twins) and western movies.\u00a0 Ed enjoyed playing cards, especially the cribbage battles with daughter, Jean and daughter-in-law, Mavis.\u00a0 On their 50th wedding anniversary, he was baptized and confirmed and became a member of the Catholic family at St. Catherine\u2019s Catholic Church in Valley City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in; line-height: 16.5pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">He is survived by his wife, Madeline; son, Loren (Mavis) of Georgia; daughters, Connie Harris of Fargo, Jean McQuay of Big Lake, MN, Lynn (Duane) Osowski of Grand Forks, and Carol Hanisch of Las Vegas, NV; and a sister, Darlene of Casper, WY.\u00a0 Ed is \u201cBumpa\u201d to 14 grandchildren and an ever-increasing number of great grandchildren.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in; line-height: 16.5pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">His greatest achievements in life were being a good son, husband, father and friend along with helping others when needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">The family prefers no flowers.\u00a0 Memorials may be made to the Sheyenne Care Center, Hospice, or to a place of your choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Edward &#8220;Ed&#8221; Spitzer, 94, Valley City, died Saturday, Sept. 15, in Sheyenne Care Center.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"node-ad node-ad-desktop\">\n<div id=\"article-sidebar-ad\" data-google-query-id=\"CIK5hsX6xN0CFV48TwodK2IOQQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/7021\/fcc.forum\/grandforksherald_2__container__\">Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, at St. Catherine&#8217;s Catholic Church in Valley City. The funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at the church.
