ABERDEEN, S.D.\u00a0 (VCSU)\u00a0 \u00a0\u2013 The Valley City State softball team outscored its opponents 15-0 on Saturday as the Vikings recorded a pair of shutout victories at the Presentation College Dome Classic.<\/p>\n
Valley City State defeated Mount Marty College 8-0 in five innings, and then blanked Northern State by a score of 7-0 in the tournament finale.<\/p>\n
The two shutouts completed a weekend sweep for the No. 25-ranked Vikings, who now have an 8-0 overall record this season. VCSU allowed just one run in its four games this weekend, outscoring its opponents 25-1.<\/p>\n
Up next:<\/strong> Valley City State (8-0) will travel to Minot State University to play four games in their dome tournament on Feb. 23-24.<\/p>\n VCSU 8, Mount Marty College 0<\/strong><\/u> Smith started in the circle and pitched four shutout innings for the win. She struck out eight and allowed five hits and one walk. Emilee Wilson<\/a> pitched a hitless fifth inning to finish the victory.<\/p>\n Jayme Menard<\/a> went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs and an RBI. Smith homered and drove in three runs, and Tatum Lundin<\/a> doubled and drove in two runs. Joelle Aiello<\/a> was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. VCSU totaled 11 hits by eight different players.<\/p>\n VCSU 7, Northern State 0<\/strong><\/u> Marissa Hawkins<\/a>, Kadie Anderson<\/a> and Jayme Menard<\/a> all recorded two-run singles in the first inning, giving the Vikings a big cushion against the Wolves.<\/p>\n Emily Smith<\/a> pitched six shutout innings to earn the win, improving her season record to 6-0 and dropping her ERA to 0.66. Smith gave up just three hits to the Wolves, walked three and struck out four. Emilee Wilson<\/a> pitched the seventh inning, allowing just one hit. Wilson lowered her season ERA to 0.78.<\/p>\n The Vikings totaled six hits from five different players. Hawkins went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. \nValley City State won its first game Saturday by mercy rule, blanking Mount Marty College in five innings. The game was tied 0-0 after two innings, but the Vikings broke the tie on Emily Smith<\/a>‘s three-run home run in the top of the third inning. VCSU added one run in the fourth, and then scored four runs in the fifth inning to seal the victory.<\/p>\n
\nValley City State’s offense erupted for six runs in the bottom of the first inning as the Vikings ended the weekend with a 7-0 shutout of Northern State.<\/p>\n
