{"id":181356,"date":"2025-10-07T01:04:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T06:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=181356"},"modified":"2026-04-06T08:32:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T13:32:23","slug":"this-day-in-history-october-7-1872","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=181356","title":{"rendered":"This Day in History &#8211; October 7, 1872"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/TDiH-train1872A.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-181357\" src=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/TDiH-train1872A-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/TDiH-train1872A-300x202.jpg 300w, http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/TDiH-train1872A-260x175.jpg 260w, http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/TDiH-train1872A.jpg 445w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> This Day In History, October 7, 1872&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211; The first train pulls into Jamestown.&nbsp; &nbsp;<em><b>*** from the 125th Anniversary Calendar of Jamestown History &amp; Wikipedia***<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p>First railroad passenger train arrives in Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>(*) Congress chartered the Northern Pacific Railway Company on July 2, 1864 with the goals of connecting the Great Lakes with Puget Sound on the Pacific, opening vast new lands for farming, ranching, lumbering and mining, and linking Washington and Oregon to the rest of the country.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Gamble_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Pacific_Railway#cite_note-Gamble-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Congress granted the railroad a potential 60 million acres (243,000&nbsp;km<sup>2<\/sup>) of land in exchange for building rail transportation to an undeveloped territory.&nbsp;<a class=\"new\" title=\"Josiah Perham (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Josiah_Perham&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Josiah Perham<\/a>&nbsp;was elected its first president on December 7, 1864.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Gamble_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Pacific_Railway#cite_note-Gamble-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It could not use all the land and in the end took just under 40 million acres.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<i><a title=\"North Coast Limited\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Coast_Limited\">North Coast Limited<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;was the premier passenger train operated by the Northern Pacific Railway between Chicago and Seattle via&nbsp;<a title=\"Butte, Montana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Butte,_Montana\">Butte, Montana<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a title=\"Homestake Pass\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homestake_Pass\">Homestake Pass<\/a>. It commenced service on April 29, 1900, served briefly as a Burlington Northern train after the merger on March 2, 1970, and ceased operation on April 30, 1971, the day before Amtrak began service. The Chicago Union Station to Saint Paul leg of the train&#8217;s route was operated by the&nbsp;<a title=\"Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago,_Burlington_and_Quincy_Railroad\">Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad<\/a>&nbsp;along its Mississippi River mainline through Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>The Northern Pacific&#8217;s secondary transcontinental passenger train was the&nbsp;<i>Alaskan,<\/i>&nbsp;until it was replaced by the&nbsp;<i><a title=\"Mainstreeter\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mainstreeter\">Mainstreeter<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;on November 16, 1952.<sup id=\"cite_ref-NP_Pictorial_5_19-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Pacific_Railway#cite_note-NP_Pictorial_5-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup><sup class=\"noprint Inline-Template\">[<i><a title=\"Wikipedia:Citing sources\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citing_sources\"><span title=\"This citation requires a reference to the specific page or range of pages in which the material appears. (May 2018)\">page&nbsp;needed<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup>&nbsp;The&nbsp;<i>Mainstreeter<\/i>, which operated via&nbsp;<a title=\"Helena, Montana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helena,_Montana\">Helena, Montana<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a title=\"Mullan Pass\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mullan_Pass\">Mullan Pass<\/a>, continued in service through the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Burlington Northern\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burlington_Northern\">Burlington Northern<\/a>&nbsp;merger until&nbsp;<a title=\"Amtrak\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amtrak\">Amtrak<\/a>&nbsp;Day (May 1, 1971). It had been reduced to a&nbsp;<a title=\"Saint Paul, Minnesota\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Paul,_Minnesota\">Saint Paul<\/a>&nbsp;to Seattle train after the last run of the former&nbsp;<a title=\"Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago,_Burlington_and_Quincy_Railroad\">Burlington Route<\/a>&nbsp;<i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Black Hawk (passenger train)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Hawk_(passenger_train)\">Black Hawk<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;on April 12\u201313, 1970.<\/p>\n<p>The Northern Pacific also participated in the&nbsp;<i>Coast Pool Train<\/i>&nbsp;service between&nbsp;<a title=\"Portland, Oregon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portland,_Oregon\">Portland<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Seattle, Washington\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seattle,_Washington\">Seattle<\/a>&nbsp;with the&nbsp;<a title=\"Great Northern Railway (U.S.)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Northern_Railway_(U.S.)\">Great Northern Railway<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a title=\"Union Pacific Railroad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Union_Pacific_Railroad\">Union Pacific Railroad<\/a>. NP and GN&nbsp;<i>Coast Pool Trains<\/i>&nbsp;lasted until Amtrak.<\/p>\n<p>There were several other passenger trains which were discontinued before the Burlington Northern merger. These included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Saint Paul to&nbsp;<a title=\"International Falls, Minnesota\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Falls,_Minnesota\">International Falls, Minnesota<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Saint Paul to&nbsp;<a title=\"Duluth, Minnesota\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duluth,_Minnesota\">Duluth, Minnesota<\/a>&nbsp;(which at one time was also a pool operation, with Great Northern Railway and the&nbsp;<a title=\"Soo Line Railroad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soo_Line_Railroad\">Soo Line<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>Duluth to&nbsp;<a title=\"Staples, Minnesota\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Staples,_Minnesota\">Staples, Minnesota<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Saint Paul to&nbsp;<a title=\"Jamestown, North Dakota\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jamestown,_North_Dakota\">Jamestown, North Dakota<\/a>&nbsp;(the last remnant of the Alaskan);<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Fargo, North Dakota\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fargo,_North_Dakota\">Fargo, North Dakota<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Winnipeg, Manitoba\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winnipeg,_Manitoba\">Winnipeg, Manitoba<\/a>;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(*)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Pacific_Railway\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Day In History, October 7, 1872&nbsp;&#8211; The first train pulls into Jamestown.&nbsp; &nbsp;*** from the 125th Anniversary Calendar of Jamestown History &amp; Wikipedia*** First railroad passenger train arrives in Jamestown.
