Bball"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday<\/p>\n<p>College Basketball&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<p>VALLEY CITY\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/article\/3654\">VCSU<\/a>)\u00a0 \u2013 The Valley City State women&#8217;s basketball team fell to nationally-ranked conference leaders Mayville State University Friday night, 70-62.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings outscored the Comets 40-39 in the second half, but Mayville State&#8217;s seven-point first quarter advantage allowed them to hold onto the lead throughout the game.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/images\/2019-20\/1_24_Schafer_in_story.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mayville State led by as much as 17 points in the third quarter when the Vikings struck back in front of their home crowd. The Vikings went on an 11-2 run capped by a <a id=\"rosterLink0\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/2\/3096\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/2\/3096\" data-original-title=\"\">Dani Schwanke<\/a> 3-pointer to cut the Comet lead to eight at the end of the third, 46-38.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings continued to battle back throughout the fourth quarter. A <a id=\"rosterLink1\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/2\/3097\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/2\/3097\" data-original-title=\"\">Maara Nelson<\/a> bucket with 3:56 on the clock sent the Vikings on a late 11-3 run. With 0:31 left in the game, another 3-pointer from Schwanke would get the Vikings within four points but Comet free throws from Claire Blascziek sealed the Comet victory.<\/p>\n<p>Valley City falls to 7-10 this the season and 4-2 in the North Star. Mayville State improves to 16-2 overall and 5-0 in the NSAA.<\/p>\n<p>Valley City State shot 27 percent from the field (20-72), 14 percent on 3&#8217;s (3-21), and 76 percent from the free throw line (19-25). Mayville State shot 36 percent from the field (22-61), 23 percent on 3&#8217;s (7-31), and 91 percent from the free throw line (19-21).<\/p>\n<p>Three Vikings scored in double figures Friday night, led by <a id=\"rosterLink2\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/2\/3097\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/2\/3097\" data-original-title=\"\">Maara Nelson<\/a> with 17, and <a id=\"rosterLink3\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/2\/3101\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/2\/3101\" data-original-title=\"\">Macey Kvilvang<\/a> and <a id=\"rosterLink4\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/2\/3096\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/2\/3096\" data-original-title=\"\">Dani Schwanke<\/a> with 12 each. <a id=\"rosterLink5\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/2\/2935\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/2\/2935\" data-original-title=\"\">Mackenzie Huber<\/a> pulled down a team-high nine rebounds for the Vikings.<\/p>\n<p>Claire Blascziek scored a team-high 22 points for Mayville State including a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line. Nicole Bunting added 14 points for the Comets while Kylee Heurung tallied a team-high nine rebounds Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UP NEXT: <\/strong>Valley City State hosts Presentation College on Saturday, Jan. 25, for a conference doubleheader. The women will tip at 3 p.m. followed by the men at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Men<\/p>\n<p>Mayville State 84 VCSU 70<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<p>VALLEY CITY\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/article\/3655\">VCSU<\/a>)\u00a0 \u2013 The Valley City State men&#8217;s basketball team held a late lead on the No. 24-ranked Mayville State Comets Friday night, but the Viking upset bid fell short late as Mayville State earned an 84-70 victory.<\/p>\n<p>Mayville State ended the game with a 20-4 run over the final 5:15, turning a 66-64 deficit into a 84-70 victory.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"rosterLink0\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/1\/2922\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/1\/2922\" data-original-title=\"\">Logan Nelson<\/a>&#8216;s 29th point of the game put the Vikings ahead 66-64 with 5:43 to go, capping a 7-2 run for VCSU&#8217;s last lead of the game. Mayville State&#8217;s Jalen Valverde gave the Comets the lead for a good at 68-66 with a three-point play at the 4:41 mark. That sparked an 8-0 run by the Comets and the Vikings were never able to recover.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/images\/2019-20\/1_24_nelson_jumper.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Valley City State drops to 6-14 overall and 2-4 in the North Star Athletic Association. Mayville State improves to 15-2 overall and 5-0 in the NSAA.<\/p>\n<p>The Comets led 41-32 at halftime and went up 43-32 early in the second half before the Vikings put together a big run. Back-to-back 3-pointers by <a id=\"rosterLink1\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/1\/3090\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/1\/3090\" data-original-title=\"\">Matthew Schlottman<\/a> and Nelson capped a 16-3 run as VCSU took a 48-46 lead. With the Vikings leading 52-49, Mayville State responded with a 9-0 run, going up 58-52 on Latrelle Franklin&#8217;s 3-pointer with 9:35 to play. The Vikings battled back to go ahead before the Comets put together their late run to stave off the upset.<\/p>\n<p>VCSU&#8217;s <a id=\"rosterLink2\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/1\/2922\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/1\/2922\" data-original-title=\"\">Logan Nelson<\/a> led all scorers with 29 points, including 18 in the second half as he and the Vikings worked the middle of the lane against Mayville State&#8217;s zone. <a id=\"rosterLink3\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/1\/3124\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/1\/3124\" data-original-title=\"\">Kevin Schramm<\/a> poured in 21 more points for the Vikings, and Schlottman made four 3&#8217;s to finish with 14 points off the bench. Both Schramm and <a id=\"rosterLink4\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/1\/3089\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/1\/3089\" data-original-title=\"\">Chris Thompson<\/a> had four assists, while Schlottman and <a id=\"rosterLink5\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/47\/1\/2929\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/47\/1\/2929\" data-original-title=\"\">Connor Entzi<\/a> led with seven rebounds each. VCSU shot 46 percent overall (28-61), 29 percent on 3&#8217;s (7-24) and went 7-for-10 on free throws.<\/p>\n<p>Mayville State had good balance with four players scoring in double figures. Max Cooper led the way with an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double. Rene Melendez made two 3&#8217;s and finished with 16 points. Both Latrelle Franklin and Jalen Valverde scored 15 points each.<\/p>\n<p>Mayville State shot 44 percent overall (28-64), 35 percent on 3&#8217;s (8-23) and 69 percent on free throws (20-29). The Comets had 12 assists, seven turnovers, one block and 11 steals. VCSU finished with 16 assists, 15 turnovers, three blocks and three steals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up next: <\/strong>Valley City State (6-14, 2-4 NSAA) hosts Presentation College for a conference doubleheader on Saturday.
