(AP) \u2013 Supporters of the University of North<br \/>\nDakota\u2019s retired Fighting Sioux nickname say they will wait until<br \/>\nDecember to submit petitions for an initiated measure.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The petitioners faced a midnight deadline on Wednesday to turn<br \/>\nin signatures to Secretary of State Al Jaeger in order for the<br \/>\nissue to be placed on the November ballot.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Spirit Lake Committee for Understanding and Respect, and the<br \/>\nFighting Sioux Ballot Measures Committee is proposing a<br \/>\nconstitutional amendment that says UND\u2019s sports teams must always<br \/>\nbe known as the Fighting Sioux.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sean Johnson, spokesman for the two groups, says the nickname<br \/>\nsupporters did not want their issue to be lumped in with other<br \/>\nballot measures in November.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nickname backers have until Dec. 12 to submit 27,000 signatures<br \/>\nin order to make the next ballot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FARGO, N.D.
