Bismarck\u00a0 (NDDoH) –\u00a0The\u00a0North Dakota\u00a0Department of Health (NDDoH) Friday\u00a0reported\u00a0the\u00a0first\u00a0confirmed\u00a0death of a\u00a0North Dakota\u00a0resident\u00a0due to\u00a0COVID-19,\u00a0the disease\u00a0caused by the novel coronavirus.\u00a0The death occurred in a\u00a0man\u00a0in his 90s\u00a0from Cass County who\u00a0had underlying health conditions and\u00a0acquired COVID-19 through community spread,\u00a0meaning\u00a0the source of infection\u00a0was\u00a0unknown.
\nGovernor Doug Burgum says, \u201cKathryn and I extend our deepest condolences to\u00a0the family and friends\u00a0who have lost a loved one. Each of us has a responsibility to\u00a0help prevent\u00a0the spread of COVID-19 in North Dakota and protect those most vulnerable to the disease\u00a0\u2013\u00a0our elderly and individuals with underlying health conditions.\u00a0We\u2019re all in this together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steps everyone can take to slow the spread of the virus include:<\/p>\n
Symptoms of COVID-19 in people who have been exposed can include fever, cough and shortness of breath. The symptoms may appear in as few as two days or\u202fas long as\u202f14 days after exposure. Reported illnesses have ranged from people with little to no symptoms to people being severely ill and dying.\u202fIndividuals should\u00a0limit social gatherings to less than 10 people\u00a0and those traveling\u00a0internationally or domestically\u00a0into North Dakota should self-isolate\u00a0for 14 days.<\/p>\n
