The Greater North Dakota Chamber will livestream its round table Policy Summit discussions set for Aug. 25 to Aug. 27. Virtual attendees will be able to ask questions and participate in moderated polls.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is escalating its actions against China by stepping squarely into one of the most sensitive regional issues dividing them and outright rejecting nearly all of Beijing’s significant maritime claims in the South China Sea. In an announcement on Monday, the administration presented the decision as an attempt to try to curb China’s increasing assertiveness in the region with a commitment to recognizing international law. But it will almost certainly further infuriate the Chinese, who are already retaliating against numerous U.S. sanctions and other penalties on other matters.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal government incurred the biggest monthly budget deficit in history in June as spending on programs to combat the coronavirus recession exploded while millions of job losses cut into tax revenues. The Treasury Department reported Monday that the deficit hit $864 billion last month, an amount of red ink that surpasses most annual deficits in the nation’s history and is above the previous monthly deficit record of $738 billion in April. That amount was also tied to the trillions of dollars Congress has provided to cushion the impact of the widespread shutdowns that occurred in an effort to limit the spread of the viral pandemic.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A top doctor is warning that Florida’s rapidly increasing number of coronavirus cases is turning Miami into the “epicenter of the pandemic,” and an epidemiologist says the region’s situation “extremely grave.” Their assessments come as Florida recorded more than 12,000 new confirmed coronavirus cases Monday after a record-setting weekend. The spike partly reflects the larger number of tests being performed but also a high percentage of those returning positive. The state set a national daily record of more than 15,000 cases reported Sunday. The state added another 35 deaths Monday, with the one-week average remaining at 71 per day.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The public can submit proposals for a new Mississippi flag, using two requirements in a state law. The designs cannot include the Confederate battle emblem, and they must have the phrase, “In God We Trust.” Mississippi recently retired the last state flag in the U.S. with the Confederate symbol that many see as racist. A commission will design a new flag, and voters will be asked to approve it Nov. 3. The state Department of Archives and History says Monday that it will collect flag proposals from the public until Aug. 13. It says designs should be simple and meaningful.

ATLANTA (AP) — The parents of an 8-year-old Atlanta girl slain near the site of an earlier police killing pleaded for the public to help find whoever is responsible. In an emotional Monday news conference, the family announced an “all-hands-on-deck” effort that will include canvassing several neighborhoods with flyers, and a new hotline for tips and a total of $50,000 in reward money. Atlanta police released images late Sunday of a second person of interest in the killing of Secoriea Turner on the Fourth of July. It happened near the Wendy’s where Rayshard Brooks was shot and killed by a police officer.

(AP) Summer classes for hundreds of Detroit students have opened, despite a protest by critics who say the coronavirus makes in-person learning too risky. News outlets report that protesters held signs and placed tree branches on the ground to try to prevent buses from leaving to pick up children on Monday. The superintendent for Detroit Public Schools Community District said 500 kids were being served. The official said he believes summer school is important for students who fell behind when buildings closed in March. A lawyer says she plans to file a lawsuit to stop the in-person instruction, and other critics say returning to classrooms while the virus is spreading isn’t safe.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom calls mail-in voting safe and secure, but it’s not perfect. More than 100,000 mail-in ballots were rejected by election officials in the state’s March presidential primary. The six-figure tally highlights the big gap in the state’s effort to ensure every vote is counted, as Democrats and Republicans argue over the integrity of vote-by-mail elections. State data obtained by The Associated Press shows 102,428 mail-in ballots were disqualified in 58 counties, mostly because they arrived too late. Also, nearly 28,000 were canceled because they either didn’t have a signature, or the signature didn’t match the one on record for the voter.

CSi Weather… .TONIGHT…Increasing clouds.
