{"id":20357,"date":"2013-06-05T14:39:24","date_gmt":"2013-06-05T19:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=20357"},"modified":"2013-06-05T14:39:24","modified_gmt":"2013-06-05T19:39:24","slug":"memorial-road-march-jun-9-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=20357","title":{"rendered":"Memorial Road March &#8211; Jun 9, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BISMARCK, N.D. &#8211; North Dakota National Guard family members will host the 6th annual &#8220;Memorial Road March&#8221; Sunday, June 9, 2013 \u00a0in remembrance of all service members killed in action in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). The march also honors all of the military members currently serving and Veterans. The nine-mile march begins at the Memorial to the Fallen in the Global War on Terrorism and ends at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Marchers will begin assembling at the Bank of North Dakota parking lot at 8:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>The public is invited to march to show their support for our military. Parking and registration the morning of the march at the Bank of North Dakota&#8217;s parking lot. Transportation from the cemetery will return participants to their vehicles at the conclusion of the march. Vans will follow the marchers in the event marchers do not wish to walk the entire distance.<\/p>\n<p>The march will begin with a short remembrance ceremony at 9:38 a.m. at the GWOT Memorial located at the front gate of the North Dakota National Guard headquarters at Fraine Barracks in Bismarck. The time of the ceremony coincides with the local Afghanistan time when Sgt. Travis A. Van Zoest, 21, and Cpl. Curtis R. Mehrer, 21, were killed in action on June 6, 2006, when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while on duty in Afghanistan. They were members of the 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment &#8211; Security Forces (1-188th ADA &#8211; SECFOR).\u00a0 Two other Soldiers in their unit were also killed in action in Afghanistan; Cpl. Nathan J. Goodiron, 25, Mandaree, N.D., and Cpl. Christopher K. Kleinwachter, 29, Wahpeton, N.D.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 1-188th ADA &#8211; SECFOR was mobilized from Dec. 2005 until April 2007 and served a year in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Marchers will rest at the McDonalds in Mandan and &#8220;The Post&#8221; south of Mandan, before heading south on North Dakota highway 1806 en route to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>WHO: Family members, community and N.D. National Guard<br \/>\nWHAT: Memorial Road March<br \/>\nWHEN: Sunday, June 9, 2013, at 9:38 a.m.<br \/>\nWHERE: Participants will register and park at the Bank of North Dakota (1200 Memorial Highway); the march begins with a brief remembrance ceremony at the GWOT Memorial at the entrance of Fraine Barracks, Bismarck, N.D.<br \/>\n&#8212;<br \/>\nSince the 2001 terrorist attacks on America, the North Dakota National Guard has mobilized more than 4,000 Soldiers and more than 2,400 Airmen in support of the Global War on Terrorism. About 70 percent of all members serving today have joined since that time. Currently, about 70 North Dakota Guardsmen are serving overseas and more than 200 are serving in Washington, D.C., and on the southwest border of the United States. With a total force of about 4,400 Guardsmen, the North Dakota National Guard remains ready for stateside response and national defense.
