Michael Cohen was released from a prison in Otisville, New York on Friday after U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein ordered him freed on Thursday. Cohen had sued the government saying he was ordered back to prison on July 9 because he was writing a book about Trump. Hellerstein said Cohen\u2019s First Amendment rights were violated by the decision. The Bureau of Prisons said Cohen’s book plans played no role in his reimprisonment.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n SEATTLE (AP) \u2014 Custom and Border Patrol agents have been sent to Seattle to protect federal property but the city\u2019s mayor says she has been told they won\u2019t confront protesters like federal authorities have in Portland, Oregon. Two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that the agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection\u2019s Special Response Team will be on standby in the Seattle area to help fellow federal law enforcement officials. The officials were not authorized to discuss the operation publicly and spoke to AP anonymously. The agents’ arrival comes after multiple businesses Seattle businesses were vandalized during protests.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n MINNEAPOLIS (AP) \u2014 The Minneapolis City Council has voted to shift police media duties away from the Police Department to city communications staff. One of the plan’s authors called it a small move designed to improve trust following the death of George Floyd. The move was approved 9-3. Some council members wanted to table it for further discussion. Local journalists also sought more discussion on the issue, raising concerns it would decrease access to timely information. Council Member Lisa Goodman voted no, and said it felt like a retaliatory move. Council Member Steve Fletcher, who voted yes, said it’s an important change.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump has presented one of the nation\u2019s highest civilian honors to Jim Ryun, a former Republican congressman and the first U.S. high schooler to run a mile in under 4 minutes. Ryun was the 1968 Olympic silver medalist in the 1,500-meter run and a three-time Olympian. Trump presented Ryun with the Presidential Medal of Freedom during a ceremony Friday at the White House. In announcing the award, the White House described Ryun as one of the most accomplished American runners in history. Ryun was named the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year in 1966, the year he smashed the world record in the mile at 3:51.3.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n JERUSALEM (AP) \u2014 The top U.S. general has made an unannounced visit to Israel to discuss \u201cregional security challenges\u201d at a time of heightened tensions with Iran and its allies across the Middle East. Army Gen. Mark Milley, the Joint Chiefs chairman, met with senior Israeli military and intelligence leaders at an air base in southern Israel and held a video conference with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The visit comes days after an air raid on the Syrian capital, suspected to have been carried out by Israel, killed five foreign fighters, including a member of the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group. Recent weeks have also seen a series of mysterious explosions in Iran.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n TEHRAN, Iran (AP) \u2014 Iranian officials have slammed the interception of an Iranian passenger plane by a U.S. fighter jet over Syria as \u201cillegal,\u201d threatening action against Washington over the incident. Iran had said that one of its airliners, flying from Tehran to Beirut on Thursday, was \u201charassed\u201d by fighter jets, but later landed safely in Lebanon. A U.S. official confirmed that a U.S. jet passed by the Iranian airliner, but at a safe distance.
