(AP) — Tribal leaders on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation in northeastern North Dakota are requiring residents to wear masks to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. It’s a rare move in a state where face coverings have not been mandated despite a sharp increase in overall cases. The reservation is located primarily in Benson County, which according to The COVID Tracking Project has seen the state’s most new cases per capita in the last two weeks. Area public health workers are worried about the trend after seeing the number of positive tests jump from 16 to 70 since the middle of July.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge has denied a request by a gaming equipment company to reactivate hundreds of electronic pull tab machines that were shut down by the attorney general in North Dakota. Powerhouse Gaming argued state officials interfered with its business and contracts and violated its right to operate the machines. Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem suspended the company’s gambling license because he said it failed to show it had purchased a software license for each device in the state. U.S. District Judge Daniel Traynor said in denying the motion for a restraining order that Powerhouse Gaming failed to show that “immediate and irreparable injury, loss or damage” will occur before its case is heard.

(AP) Family members of nine women and children from an offshoot Mormon community who were killed in Mexico in November have filed a federal lawsuit against the Juarez drug cartel. They accuse the cartel of carrying out the attack in retribution for publicly criticizing and demonstrating against the cartel. A lawyer representing the family members said they initiated the lawsuit to show the Juarez cartel was responsible for the Nov. 4 slaughter and to seek damages. It’s not clear whether representatives of the cartel would appear in court to defend against the lawsuit.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has issued a statewide mask mandate amid a spike in coronavirus cases, setting up a conflict with Republican legislative leaders who oppose such a requirement and successfully sued earlier to kill a “safer at home” order. The Democrat Evers declared a new public health emergency Thursday, after his initial one expired in May, and ordered the wearing of masks starting on Saturday. The Wisconsin Supreme Court in May tossed out an order from Evers’ health secretary closing most nonessential businesses. Evers has repeatedly cited that ruling as a reason for his reluctance to join 32 other states that have mask mandates.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Officials have released the name of a 24-year-old man who died when a freight train hit the semi-truck he was driving at a crossing in northeastern Montana. Montana Highway Patrol Trooper T’Elle Evans says Ashton Gillming of Sidney died in the collision Tuesday morning near Brockton. Officials say Gillming was working as a hired hand for a local family.

In world and national news…

MIAMI (AP) — Health officials in Florida tallied a new record high in daily COVID-19 deaths for the third straight day. The state faces pressure to adopt new measures to combat the pandemic. The head of a congressional coronavirus oversight panel sent letters to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and three other Republican governors requesting documents to show how their states are fighting the pandemic. The Florida Department of Health said 253 more deaths were reported. That brings its average reported deaths per day to 154 for the past week and raises the state’s total death toll to 6,586.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican officials in the states and on Capitol Hill are condemning President Donald Trump’s suggestion about postponing the Nov/ember election. And those officials are trying to bat away questions that their own party leader has now raised about the legitimacy of that upcoming vote. Top Republicans in Congress quickly rebuffed Trump’s suggestion. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the election date is set in stone. House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy says the election “should go forward” as planned. And in the states, Republican leaders emphasize that officials are doing all they can to ensure voting systems are secure and reliable.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity agency this week has hosted a three-day tabletop exercise aimed at helping local, state and federal officials prepare for and respond to worst-case scenarios on Election Day. The virtual exercise, which concludes Thursday, involves more than 2,000 participants who brainstormed ways to deal with problems and crises that could arise in November. This is the third year DHS has held these exercises, though this one was held virtually because of coronavirus concerns. It comes at a particularly fraught moment as the nation edges closer toward a contentious presidential contest when an expected surge in absentee balloting is likely to delay the reporting of results and test election officials in unexpected ways.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court says it plans to review a decision ordering the dismissal of the Justice Department’s case against President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn. The action by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit is likely to prolong the fight over Flynn’s fate. It represents yet another dramatic development in a case that has taken unexpected twists and turns over the last year and turned Flynn into something of a cause celebre for President Donald Trump and his supporters. The court set arguments for Aug. 11.

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. government has dropped its effort to silence President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer. An agreement Thursday between lawyers for the government and Michael Cohen’s attorney calls for the lifting of a media ban that had prevented Cohen from speaking publicly. Cohen is completing the last two years of a three-year prison sentence at home after pleading guilty to campaign finance charges and lying to Congress. He was released from prison in May, only to be returned earlier this month after making it known that he planned to publish a book critical of the president. A judge last week ordered him released, saying the government’s action was retaliatory and a violation of his First Amendment rights.

CSi Weather… TONIGHT…Mostly clear.
