Elmer is most known in Jamestown for sculpting the World\u2019s Largest Buffalo in 1959, his first large sculpture. He also sculpted the Eagle outside the All Veteran\u2019s Building and the Anne Carlsen Statue outside the Anne Carlsen Center.\u00a0 \u00a0 See Video Below:<\/p>\n<p>Elmer was a talented artist who constructed the Jamestown \u201cBuffalo City\u201d namesake. This initial sculpture moved him to pursue the professional name of Sculptor. The monument is and will continue to be Elmer\u2019s largest project and legacy as it has and will always be the icon for anyone in the region.<\/p>\n<p>He has created over 20 sculptures displayed in cities across the Midwest, many of them in La Crosse, Wisconsin.\u00a0 \u00a0Elmer passed away peacefully in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>From 2016: (CSi) The creator of the World\u2019s Largest Buffalo and the VFW Club \u201cEagle \u201d facade in Jamestown,\u00a0<strong>Elmer Petersen<\/strong>, was at the Jamestown Arts Center\u2019s gallery for a lunch program titled\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cWhatever Happened to Elmer Petersen?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>July 20, 2016.\u00a0 Petersen is still active as a sculptor. \u00a0The entire presentation was recorded by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thereplaychannel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Replay Channel<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>and airs\u00a0exclusively on CSi.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: Petersen, to refurbish this giant. Volunteers scaled ladders and balanced high on a mechanical lift to refresh and make cosmetic changes to the 26-foot-tall beast \u2013 donating an estimated 100 hours of man-power. The Buffalo\u2018s mane was enhanced, its horns were lengthened and its paint job was upgraded \u2013 incorporating shading techniques and giving texture to the Buffalo\u2018s furry coat.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the restoration, Hampton\u00a0 Hotels launched \u2015Save-A-Landmark,\u2016 a campaign dedicated to refurbishing historical, fun and cultural landmarks that reside along North America\u2018s highways.<\/p>\n<p>It contributed more than $16,000 to the Buffalo\u2018s ongoing care, ensuring that future generations of visitors will have the chance to stand in the shadow of this gigantic piece of Americana.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jamestown Tourism News Release:\u00a0 Elmer Peterson passed away on August 5, 2020 at the age of 91.
