Over 70 bidders were registered online to bid on the 50-acre, double-fenced, Cold War-era site near Fairdale. Leslie Volochenko of Mandan bought the property in 2012 and put it up for sale since he hopes to move to Texas. Dave Keller of Pifer\u2019s Auction & Realty conducted the auction but says the highest bidder fell short of the nearly half-million-dollar price Volochenko hoped to get. Keller says they are negotiating with the highest bidder, who is a man from North Dakota, and hope to have things figured out by the end of the week. The Bismarck Tribune reports the site includes a command bunker and 14 missile launch tubes.<\/p>\n

MINOT, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Data from the American Immigration Council shows North Dakota has a small but growing community of immigrants, with many coming from the Philippines. The council\u2019s latest figures show immigrants comprised 6% of the state\u2019s workforce in 2018. Immigrants accounted for 13% of the state\u2019s production employees and 11% of residents working in the manufacturing industry. The state\u2019s 1,506 immigrant business owners accounted for 3% of all self-employed in 2018 and generated $66.8 million in business income. Immigrant-led households in the state paid about $156 million in federal taxes and $71 million in state and local taxes in 2018.<\/p>\n

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A large fire at an apartment complex in Mandan has displaced its tenants. Flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the three-story Sunset Bluffs Apartments Monday night. The Red Cross is assisting an unknown number of people whose apartments were lost or damaged. Mandan Fire Chief Steve Nardello said Tuesday the roof of the complex is \u201cburned off.\u201d The fire started on the third floor, possibly on a balcony. There are no known injuries to residents or firefighters. The Bismarck Tribune reports the complex is next to the building that burned in July 2019 and was later razed. The cause of Monday night\u2019s fire is under investigation.<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 A crumbling college football season took a massive hit Tuesday when the Big Ten and Pac-12, two historic and powerful conferences, succumbed to the pandemic and canceled their fall football seasons.<\/p>\n
Five months almost to the day after the first spikes in coronavirus cases in the U.S. led to the cancellation of the NCAA basketball tournaments, the still raging pandemic is tearing down another American sports institution: fall Saturdays filled with college football.<\/p>\n
Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott called the decision \u201cextremely difficult and painful.\u201d Despite pleas from players, coaches and President Donald Trump in recent days to play on, 40% of major college football teams have now decided to punt on a fall season, a decision that will cost schools tens of millions of dollars and upends traditions dating back a century.<\/p>\n
Both conferences cited the risk of trying to keep players from contracting and spreading the coronavirus when the programs are not operating in a bubble like the NBA and NHL are doing. They also cited the broader state of the pandemic in the United States, which has had more than 5 million cases of COVID-19.<\/p>\n
All fall sports in the Big Ten have been called off and a spring season will be explored.<\/p>\n
Two smaller conferences, the Mid-American and Mountain West, had already announced the uncertain move to spring football. The decisions by the deep-pocketed Big Ten and Pac-12, with hundred million-dollar television contracts and historic programs, shook the foundation of college sports.<\/p>\n
SUPREME COURT-NCAA<\/p>\n
WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 A court decision the NCAA says will hurt college sports by allowing certain student-athletes to be paid \u201cvast sums\u201d of money as \u201ceducational expenses\u201d will go into effect after the Supreme Court declined Tuesday to intervene at this point.<\/p>\n
Justice Elena Kagan denied the NCAA\u2019s request to put a lower court ruling on hold at least temporarily while the NCAA asks the Supreme Court to take up the case. It plans to do so by mid-October.<\/p>\n
Kagan declined to put on hold a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In May it upheld a lower-court ruling prohibiting the NCAA from limiting compensation for education-related expenses for student-athletes. The ruling applies to athletes in Division I football and basketball programs.<\/p>\n
The NCAA said the ruling \u201ceffectively created a pay-for-play system for all student-athletes, allowing them to be paid both \u2018unlimited\u2019 amounts for participating in \u2018internships\u2019\u201d and an additional $5,600 or more each year they remain eligible to play their sport.<\/p>\n

That word comes from a person with direct knowledge of the punishment. In addition, the person said Athletics outfielder Ramon Laureano will receive a six-game suspension and a fine.<\/p>\n
Laureano was hit by a pitch from Humberto Castellanos with one out in the seventh inning of Oakland\u2019s 7-2 victory Sunday. He began exchanging words with a gesturing Cintr\u00f3n then left first base, threw down his batting helmet and began sprinting toward Cintr\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Cleveland Indians placed starters Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac on the restricted list after the pitchers broke team rules by leaving their hotel in Chicago and risking exposure to the coronavirus. Clevinger and Plesac went out Saturday night with a group of people following the Indians\u2019 win over the White Sox. The team immediately sent Plesac home in a car service after learning he had violated the team\u2019s code of conduct. The Indians were not aware Clevinger had been with him until after he flew back to Cleveland with the team and staff.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s government last month announced all international sports events in the country would be canceled until the end of the year, and organizers of the Oct. 15-18 women\u2019s golf tournament made the cancellation official in a statement Wednesday citing \u201cthe current health concerns and significant travel restrictions put in place due to the COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kamala Harris as his running mate, making history by selecting a Black woman for a major party’s presidential ticket for the first time in history. It’s a move that fulfills the wish of Democrats clamoring to see a woman of color on the ticket. The 55-year-old Harris was elected to the Senate in 2016 after serving as California\u2019s attorney general. She competed against Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination but left the race before voting began as she struggled to raise money. One of notable moments of her presidential campaign came at the expense of Biden, when she slammed his past opposition to school busing.<\/p>\n

With a coronavirus vaccine still months off, companies are rushing to test what may be the next best thing: antibody drugs that fight the virus right away, without having to train the immune system to do the job. Antibodies are proteins the body makes when an infection occurs; they attach to a virus and help it be eliminated. The drugs are concentrated versions of specific antibodies that worked best against the coronavirus in lab an animal tests. They’re being tested to treat COVID-19 and for preventing infection in people at high risk of it. Results of key studies are expected by fall.<\/p>\n

A municipal government in China has donated 40,000 medical-grade face masks to Maryland\u2019s capital city. The donations from Changsha were first offered to Annapolis city officials in April, when the need for the masks among public safety workers was high in the beginning of the pandemic. A health official said one of the infected people works at a food cold-storage facility, which was being swabbed to check if it was the possible source. The cluster surprised many and raised questions about whether the general election would go ahead as planned next month.
