Bismarck\u00a0 (NDHP)\u00a0 The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports that on December 10, around 7:00 AM, a North Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper\u00a0 attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding in Dawson.\u00a0 As the Trooper attempted to approach the vehicle the driver fled north towards I94. The driver proceeded west bound on I94 at speeds around 100MPH.\u00a0 The driver exited I94 at Steele, crossed Hwy 3, and proceeded down the north ditch of the I94 on ramp.\u00a0 The driver went through a fence on the north edge of the right of way.\u00a0\u00a0 The driver proceeded west on the gravel frontage road.\u00a0 Approximately two miles west of Steele the driver attempted to drive into a field on the north side of the roadway.\u00a0 When going through the fence the driver struck a rock pile.\u00a0 The vehicle vaulted over the rock pile and was disabled.\u00a0 The driver fled on foot, but was arrested a short distance from the vehicle.<\/p>\n
The driver was identified as 29 year old John Lindler of Bismarck. He was unrestrained and suffered nondisabling injuries from the incident.\u00a0 Lindler is being charged with driving under the influence, driving under suspension, fleeing a police officer, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and drug offenses.<\/p>\n

Authorities say the body of a woman, the subject of a search in the Sheyenne River at West Fargo was recovered about 3-p.m., on Thursday.<\/p>\n

WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The search is resuming for a woman who authorities say apparently drowned in the Sheyenne River in West Fargo. Firefighters and police responded to the river late Wednesday afternoon on a report of a woman who had entered the water. Firefighters and the Valley Water Rescue team searched the river and its banks. Drones from the Southeast Regional UAS team and search dogs were also used but were not successful in finding the victim. Officials say the current in that part of the river is strong and that it\u2019s unusual at this time of year that the river is not frozen over.<\/p>\n

Bismarck\u00a0 (NDHP)\u00a0 The North Dakota Highway Patrol is now publishing a monthly activities report. The report is designed to inform the public about the department\u2019s mission to keep North Dakota safe and secure. Troopers work to keep the citizens of our state safe by performing a variety of activities each month.<\/p>\n
The duties of a trooper include enforcing traffic laws, inspecting commercial motor vehicles, investigating crashes, apprehending criminals, and educating the public at outreach events. At times troopers must deal with high risk situations such as pursuits and use of force incidents. The highway patrol wants to keep North Dakota citizens informed about the types of incidents troopers handle on a monthly basis.<\/p>\n
The report will include information such as the number of crashes investigated, traffic stops conducted, Vision Zero and commercial motor vehicle enforcement activities completed, use of force incidents, pursuits, and criminal arrests. A list of activities and an explanation of each category will be provided to help individuals understand the purpose of the highway patrol\u2019s involvement. The highway patrol hopes the public will find this information useful. A link to the monthly activity report, along with the category descriptions, can be found on the main page of the North Dakota Highway Patrol\u2019s website at www.nd.gov\/ndhp. Each month the patrol will announce the publication of the previous month\u2019s activities on its social media sites and provide a link to the most recent report.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The North Dakota Senate\u2019s top budget writer is among several people who have tested positive for COVID-19 following the Legislature\u2019s three-day organizational session at the state Capitol last week. Grand Forks Republican Sen. Ray Holmberg confirmed his diagnosis to the Bismarck Tribune on Thursday. Three employees of the Legislature\u2019s 32-person nonpartisan research agency also have tested positive. North Dakota health officials on Thursday confirmed 575 new cases of the coronavirus and 23 additional deaths. Officials said 17 of the deaths occurred at least three days prior to the report Thursday, including 15 from November.<\/p>\n
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Republican Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says the state incurred no cost in joining a lawsuit seeking to overturn the outcome of the presidential election. North Dakota and 16 other states won by President Donald Trump in November joined Texas in urging the court to take on the lawsuit that challenges election results in four battleground states won by President-elect Joe Biden. Stenehjem said \u201cit\u2019s normal\u201d for a state to not be charged for signing on to a so-called amicus brief. Stenehjem said the case should be settled by the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

MISSION, Kan. (AP) \u2014 As officials met to discuss approval of a COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday, the numbers grew ever more stunning. The U.S. recorded 3,124 deaths Wednesday, the highest one-day total yet, according to Johns Hopkins University, and more than the 2,500 Americans who died on D-Day in World War II. Up until last week, the peak was 2,603 deaths on April 15, when New York City was the epicenter of the nation\u2019s outbreak. More than 106,000 people were hospitalized \u2014 also a record total.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The U.S. government\u2019s deficit in the first two months of the budget year ran 25.1% higher than the same period a year ago, as spending to deal with the COVID pandemic soared while tax revenues fell. The Treasury Department reported Thursday that with two months gone in the budget year, the deficit totaled $429.3 billion, up from $343.3 billion in last year’s October-November period. The deficit \u2014 the shortfall between what the government collects in taxes and what it spends \u2014 reflected an 8.9% jump in outlays and a 2.9% decline in tax revenues.<\/p>\n

And Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is citing similarities between the latest administration offer and an emerging measure from a bipartisan group of senators. But a one-week extension of a potential government shutdown appears to have sapped some urgency from the talks. Both House and Senate leaders say they won\u2019t adjourn Congress without passing an aid measure. The aid is linked to a government-wide funding bill and the expected one-week extension for that bill is extended to end Dec. 18.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 In a rare break with President Donald Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is urging passage of a wide-ranging defense policy bill that Trump has threatened to veto. The Kentucky Republican says it is important for Congress to continue a nearly 60-year streak of passing the National Defense Authorization Act. The bill affirms 3% pay raises for U.S. troops and authorizes billions in military programs and construction. The Democratic-led House passed the bill on Tuesday. A vote in the Republican-led Senate is expected Thursday or Friday.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Two American bomber aircraft have flown over a swath of the Middle East, sending what U.S. officials call a message of deterrence to Iran. The flight of the B-52H Stratofortress bombers over the region Thursday was the second such mission in less than a month. It was designed to underscore America\u2019s commitment to the Middle East despite troop withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan. U.S. officials also are worried about a possible Iranian retaliatory strike on the anniversary of the U.S. airstrike that killed Iran\u2019s top general near Baghdad\u2019s airport last January.
