Viterbo improves to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the NSAA.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings trailed 22-14 after the first 10 minutes but came alive in the second quarter as they learned how to break Viterbo&#8217;s full court pressure. Trailing 27-18, Valley City State took the next 11 straight points capped by a layup from <a id=\"rosterLink4\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/48\/2\/3682\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/48\/2\/3682\" data-original-title=\"\">Andranae Powns<\/a> to take its first lead of the game at 29-27 with 5:46 on the clock. Viterbo finished the half on a 9-0 run to lead 45-38 at halftime.<\/p>\n<p>Viterbo stepped up its defensive effort throughout the third quarter to hold a 16-point advantage at the buzzer. The Vikings held the V-Hawks to just 16 points in the fourth quarter but couldn&#8217;t make up the deficit, falling 83-69 to Viterbo.<\/p>\n<p>Valley City State shot 41 percent from the field (28-68), 18 percent from beyond the arc (3-17), and 58 percent on free throws (10-17). Viterbo shot 47 percent from the field (28-60), 30 percent on three-pointers (6-20), and 84 percent on free throws (21-25).<\/p>\n<p>Viterbo scored 26 points off of 18 Viking turnovers Saturday while Valley City State only converted 12 points off of 15 V-Hawk turnovers.<\/p>\n<p>The V-Hawks had three players in double figure scoring, led by Kacie Gross who scored 19, Kaitlyn Kennedy who added 17, and Madison Lindauer with 13. Viterbo University improves to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.<\/p>\n<p>A disciplined Viterbo team took care of the ball against VCSU&#8217;s pressure defense, which had been forcing just over 20 turnovers per game this season. The V-Hawks turned it over just 13 times on Saturday, including only three turnovers in the first half.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/images\/2020-21\/1_16_mbb_in_story.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>A back-and-forth first half featured three ties and 10 lead changes. The Vikings held a slim 46-44 lead at the break, thanks in part to a 10-for-15 first half from 3-point range.<\/p>\n<p>With the game tied 59-59 at the 14:10 mark of the second half, Viterbo started its game-changing run. The V-Hawks went on an 18-4 run over the next five minutes of play, opening up a 77-63 lead on two free throws from Spencer Speltz with 9:20 remaining.<\/p>\n<p>The teams traded buckets before VCSU started its comeback, trailing 84-73 with 2:50 to go. <a id=\"rosterLink0\" class=\"rosterProfileLink   \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/48\/1\/3684\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/48\/1\/3684\" data-original-title=\"\">Joshua Kelly<\/a> made back-to-back driving layups to jumpstart the run, and <a id=\"rosterLink1\" class=\"rosterProfileLink  \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/48\/1\/3294\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/48\/1\/3294\" data-original-title=\"\">Connor Entzi<\/a> followed with a 3-pointer that made it 84-80 with 1:37 to play. Viterbo&#8217;s Noah Fredrickson pushed the lead back to 86-80 with a shot inside.<\/p>\n<p>VCSU&#8217;s final-minute effort trimmed the deficit to just two points as <a id=\"rosterLink2\" class=\"rosterProfileLink  \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/48\/1\/3297\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/48\/1\/3297\" data-original-title=\"\">Chris Thompson<\/a> made two free throws and <a id=\"rosterLink3\" class=\"rosterProfileLink  \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/48\/1\/3303\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/48\/1\/3303\" data-original-title=\"\">Kevin Schramm<\/a> scored inside to make it 86-84. VCSU nearly forced a turnover but then had to foul, and Cunitz sank the two free throws to clinch the game.<\/p>\n<p>Four Vikings scored in double figures, led by 15 points and nine rebounds from <a id=\"rosterLink4\" class=\"rosterProfileLink  \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/48\/1\/3303\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/48\/1\/3303\" data-original-title=\"\">Kevin Schramm<\/a>. Entzi and <a id=\"rosterLink5\" class=\"rosterProfileLink  \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/48\/1\/3296\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/48\/1\/3296\" data-original-title=\"\">Jalen Addison<\/a> each scored 13 points, and Thompson added 11.<\/p>\n<p>Fredrickson made six 3&#8217;s for Viterbo as he finished with a game-high 24 points. Cunitz added 22 points and Jack Monis chipped in 19.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings shot 51 percent overall (30-59), 54 percent on 3&#8217;s (14-26) and 67 percent at the line (10-15). Viterbo finished at 57 percent overall (31-54), 50 percent on 3&#8217;s (11-22) and 83 percent on free throws (15-18).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up next: <\/strong>Valley City State travels to Mayville State on Jan. 22 and Presentation College on Jan. 23.
