Shannon Roers Jones’ proposal would make the photos confidential until the suspect is convicted or a suspect fails to appear in court or there’s a compelling safety interest warranting their release. Roers Jones says that the media sensationalizes mugshots and they remain online forever once posted, hurting people’s chances at finding jobs and romantic partners. North Dakota Newspaper Association attorney Jack McDonald counters that mugshots enhance stories, if people are concerned about their mugshots being published they shouldn’t commit the crime and the next logical step is not reporting the crime until the case is resolved.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Underage drinking in North Dakota ranks among the highest in the nation. A pair of bills being considered by the Legislature would do away with the prospect of jail time for offenders and also give a judge discretion whether to order treatment. One bill would make the penalty for underage drinking an infraction that would be punishable by up to a $1,000 fine. Democratic Rep. Zachary Ista says his bill is intended to bring the penalty for underage drinking in line with the sanction for marijuana use. The contract would reportedly pay Pérez $4.5 million this season, with a $6 million option or $500,000 buyout for 2022. Pérez went 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, when he was the only starter in the Red Sox rotation to make all 12 of his scheduled starts.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-VANDERBILT KICKER-INAUGURATION

History-making woman kicker invited to Biden inauguration

NASHVILLE, Tenn. That takes the total number of competitors isolating in hotel rooms to 72 on Sunday.

Australian Open organizers say the latest positive test came from a passenger on a flight from Doha, Qatar, who was not a member of the playing contingent. But all 58 passengers, including the 25 players, will be confined to their hotel rooms for two weeks.

Organizers had previously announced that 47 players had to quarantine after four COVID-19 cases emerged from two other charter flights bringing players, staff, officials and media to Australia.

No players are among the five people who have tested positive.

SONY OPEN

Kevin Na has a big finish and wins the Sony Open

HONOLULU (AP) —Kevin Na had to rally to win the Sony Open. He got up-and-down from behind the 18th green for a final birdie to shoot 65 for a one-shot victory over Chris Kirk and Joaquin Niemann. Na won for the fifth time in his PGA Tour career. Kirk had reason to feel like a winner, too. He stepped away from the game in the summer of 2019 to treat alcoholism and depression. He was given a medical extension for lost time, and this was his last event to earn enough points to regain full status. He did just that.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. defense officials say they are worried about an insider attack or other threat from service members involved in securing President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration. That concern is prompting the FBI to vet all 25,000 National Guard troops coming into Washington for the event. The massive undertaking reflects the extraordinary security concerns that have gripped Washington following the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump rioters. And it underscores fears that some of the very people assigned to protect the city over the next several days could present a threat to the incoming president and other VIPs in attendance.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s president has urged the incoming Biden administration to build upon the achievements and learn from the failures of President Donald Trump’s diplomatic engagement with North Korea. Moon Jae-in lobbied hard to help set up Trump’s three summits with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but the the diplomacy stalemated. North Korea has a history of staging weapons tests and other provocations to test new U.S. presidents, and Kim vowed to strengthen his nuclear weapons program in recent political speeches that were seen as aimed at pressuring the incoming Biden administration. The South Korean leader has been desperate to keep alive a positive atmosphere for dialogue. He claimed Kim still had a “clear willingness” to denuclearize.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says its aircraft struck targets in the Gaza Strip in response to two rockets fired from the Palestinian territory. It says fighter jets hit Hamas military targets early on Monday, including sites for digging underground tunnels, some of which stretch into Israel. There were no immediate reports of injuries from the airstrikes. There were also no reports of damage or injury from the rockets launched. Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since the Islamic militant group seized power of the coastal enclave in 2007. There’s been no major confrontation since 2014 but there are often cross-border skirmishes between the sides.

MAMUJU, Indonesia (AP) — Aid was reaching the thousands of people left homeless and struggling after an earthquake that killed at least 84 people on an Indonesian island. Rescuers also intensified their work Monday to find those buried in the rubble. More rescuers and volunteers were deployed in the hardest-hit city of Mamuju and the neighboring district of Majene on Sulawesi island, where the magnitude 6.2 quake struck Friday. Water, food and medical supplies were being distributed from trucks. The military said it sent five planes carrying rescue personnel, food, medicine, blankets, field tents and water tankers. Masks also were being distributed to protect people in the temporary shelters from the coronavirus.

World markets have gotten off to a slow start for the week following a retreat last week on Wall Street, despite news that the Chinese economy grew 2.3% in 2020. Shares fell in Paris, London and Tokyo but advanced in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Most U.S. markets are closed Monday for a national holiday. Investors appear to have grown increasingly wary, with reports showing deepening economic devastation from the pandemic. The S&P 500 fell 0.7% Friday and other benchmarks also declined. Overall, stocks seem to have run out of steam since setting records recently on optimism over COVID-19 vaccines and more stimulus from Washington.

CSi Weather… REST OF TODAY…Cloudy. chance of snow in the afternoon.
