Friday<\/strong><\/p>\n VCSU Basketball<\/p>\n Women<\/p>\n MAYVILLE\u00a0\u00a0 (VCSU<\/a>)\u2013 The Valley City State women\u2019s basketball team couldn\u2019t hold onto its lead Friday night as Mayville State used a 33-point fourth quarter to defeat the Vikings, 83-77.<\/p>\n Valley City State falls to 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the North Star. Mayville State improves to 9-2 on the season and 4-1 in the conference.<\/p>\n Trailing 22-16 after the first 10 minutes of play, the Vikings opened the second quarter with a 10-5 run to close the gap to just three points. Maara Nelson<\/a>\u2018s 13 second quarter points helped the Vikings inch closer. Three straight 3\u2019s from Adriana Torres<\/a>, Emma Nielsen<\/a>, and Macey Kvilvang<\/a> allowed the Vikings to take a 40-34 advantage at halftime.<\/p>\n Valley City State led by as much as 14 points with 3:08 left in the third quarter on a bucket from Kvilvang. Mayville then took an 11-2 to close the gap to just five points heading into the final quarter of play.<\/p>\n With 8:32 to go, Mayville\u2019s Sydney Magsam hit a three-pointer in the corner to take over the lead but was answered with a three-pointer from Taryn Dieterle<\/a>. Erin Walcker then hit another three-pointer for the Comets as Mayville State took the lead for good to finish with the victory.<\/p>\n Maara Nelson<\/a>\u2018s 20 points led the Viking offense Friday, while Macey Kvilvang<\/a> added 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Taryn Dieterle<\/a> chipped in 13 points, and Adriana Torres<\/a> added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Vikings.<\/p>\n Valley City State shot 37 percent from the field (30-81), 41 percent on three-pointers (9-22), and 67 percent on free throws (8-12). Mayville State shot 47 percent from the field (30-64), 41 percent on three-pointers (7-17), and 62 percent from the free throw line (16-26).<\/p>\n Valley City State converted 20 points off of 23 Comet turnovers Friday. Mayville State held the rebounding advantage 52-37, including 12 on the offensive glass.<\/p>\n Jordan Zrust led the Comets with a double double, scoring 25 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Mayville State improves to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play.<\/p>\n Mayville State jumped out to a quick 22-12 lead over the first eight minutes of play when a Kevin Schramm<\/a> three-pointer started a 17-4 Viking run to take a 29-26 advantage. Mayville State then finished the first half with an 11-2 run to lead by double figures at halftime, 45-35.<\/p>\n Valley City State trailed by as much as 15 points with 14:25 to play when a layup from Hunter Sand<\/a> sparked a Viking run to trim the Comet lead to just six points. A three-pointer from Jalen Addison<\/a>, followed by a Comet turnover put away by Eddie Oyet<\/a> capped the Viking run to trail by just a point at 61-60. Over the final eight minutes, the Comets would take a 17-7 run to finish with the win.<\/p>\n Jalen Addison<\/a> led the Vikings with 13 points while Eddie Oyet<\/a> and Connor Entzi<\/a> each added nine points. Joshua Kelly<\/a> added eight points and a game-high five steals for the Vikings. Kevin Schramm<\/a>, Chris Thompson<\/a>, and Daevonte Munson<\/a> each added seven points. Oyet and Schramm each pulled down seven rebounds Friday.<\/p>\n Valley City State shot 41 percent from the field (27-66), 37 percent on three-pointers (8-22), and 46 percent on free throws (5-11). (VCSU<\/a>)\u00a0 \u2013 The Valley City State women\u2019s basketball team overcame a gradual start to finish with a road victory over Presentation College Saturday, 71-45.<\/p>\n Four Vikings scored in double figures Saturday including 13 points each from Allie Critchley<\/a> and Dani Schwanke<\/a>. Taryn Dieterle<\/a> and Adriana Torres<\/a> each chipped in 12 points for the Vikings. Macey Kvilvang<\/a> pulled down a team-high nine rebounds while Dieterle, Meredith Dumas<\/a>, and Andranae Powns<\/a> each grabbed six.<\/p>\n Valley City State improves to 5-8 overall and 3-4 in the NSAA. Presentation falls to 1-16 overall and 0-6 in the North Star.<\/p>\n It was a slow start Saturday as the Vikings held a narrow 13-10 lead after the first quarter. Leading by six points with 3:30 until halftime, a bucket from Dieterle sent Valley City State on a 14-8 run to hold a 33-23 advantage at the buzzer.<\/p>\n Presentation opened the second half holding the Vikings scoreless over the first 3:20, until a basket from Andranae Powns<\/a> sparked a Viking rally to close out the quarter on a 21-10 run. The Vikings held the Saints to just eight points in the fourth quarter to finish with the 26-point win.<\/p>\n Valley City State shot 37 percent from the field (23-62), 44 percent on three-pointers (7-16), and 90 percent on free throws (18-20). The teams traded baskets over the next three minutes, but Valley City State closed out the first half on a 14-5 run to lead 46-31 heading into the locker room.<\/p>\n Valley City State led by as much as 31 points on a three-point play from Chris Thompson<\/a> on its way to the road win.<\/p>\n Eddie Oyet<\/a> and Chris Thompson<\/a> each scored 15 points for the Vikings while Joshua Kelly<\/a> and Kevin Schramm<\/a> each added 10. Hunter Sand<\/a> scored nine points off the Viking bench and Connor Entzi<\/a> added eight points and a team-high four rebounds for VCSU.<\/p>\n Valley City State shot 57 percent from the field (31-54), 44 percent on three-pointers (8-18), and 90 percent on free throws (18-20). University at Harold Newman Arena.<\/p>\n Jamestown won for the third straight outing, improving their record to 12-6 overall and 9-6 in the GPAC. Mount Marty falls to 4-15 overall and 2-14 in the conference.<\/p>\n The Lancers took a quick 2-0 lead after a pair of free throws 12 seconds into the contest, but an Audrey Rodakowski<\/a> (FR\/Dickinson, ND) bucket and Noelle Josephson<\/a> (JR\/Ramsey, MN) three-pointer put UJ ahead 5-2 and the Jimmies never looked back.<\/p>\n Jamestown led 12-2 early on and 20-10 after the first quarter. Mount Marty made just three of its 14 shots in the opening quarter and missed all four of its three-point attempts.<\/p>\n A big second quarter by the Jimmies stretched the lead to 24 at the break. The Lancers got within 17 points at the 5:12 mark of the second quarter, only to see UJ close out the quarter on a 12-5 run. Jamestown\u2019s defense surrendered just four made baskets, three of which came from beyond the arc, and did not allow Mount Marty a trip to the foul line.<\/p>\n Jamestown continued their offensive onslaught in the third, outscoring the Lancers 28-9. Hannah DeMars<\/a> (SO\/Grand Rapids, MN), held scoreless in the first half, scored 11 straight points for the Jimmies in a span of 3:39, helping extend the lead to 60-28. A three-point play by Correy Hickman<\/a> (SR\/Morris, MN) gave UJ its first 40-point lead of the contest, and Kia Tower<\/a> (SO\/Bigfork, MN) knocked down a three-pointer to make it a 43-point edge going to the fourth.<\/p>\n Fourteen of the Jimmies\u2019 final 17 points came from the bench, led by Courtney Lloyd<\/a> (JR\/Valley City, ND) and McKenna Becher<\/a> (FR\/West Fargo, ND) with seven each. UJ\u2019s 90 points tied a season high.<\/p>\n Tower led Jamestown with 16 points while Josephson (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Rodakowski (13 points, 14 rebounds) both posted double-doubles. DeMars and Emma Stoehr<\/a> (SR\/Woodbury, MN) added 11 points each. Hickman finished with a season-high nine points, and Lloyd and Becher also recorded season highs.<\/p>\n Next up for the Jimmies is a home game Monday against College of Saint Mary (Neb.) set to tipoff at 12 p.m.<\/p>\n Men\u2026<\/p>\n Jamestown (UJ<\/a>) A 25-10 run to open the second half provided some breathing room for the University of Jamestown men\u2019s basketball team, and the Jimmies went on to a 93-66 win over Mount Marty (S.D.) University Saturday at Harold Newman Arena.<\/p>\n Jamestown moves to 14-5 overall and 10-4 in the GPAC. Mount Marty drops to 7-14 overall and 4-12 in the conference.<\/p>\n The first half was a highly contested battle, with the Jimmies leading by as many as seven before the Lancers went ahead by two.<\/p>\n Elijah Pappas converted a three-point play with 8:36 in the first to give Mount Marty a 24-23 lead. On UJ\u2019s next possession, Allante\u2019 Pickens<\/a> (SR\/Chicago, IL) drained a three-pointer to put Jamestown ahead by two, and the Jimmies never looked back.<\/p>\n Will Cordes<\/a> (FR\/Shakopee, MN) opened the second half with a three-pointer stretching the lead to nine, and another Cordes three with two more from Jack Talley<\/a> (SR\/Sioux Falls, SD) were part of a 14-4 run that quickly made it 55-39.<\/p>\n Mount Marty got as close as 16 one more time in the game, but threes from Cordes and Pickens along with a Cole Woodford<\/a> (FR\/Redwood Falls, MN) bucket helped the lead grow to 23. Jamestown\u2019s largest advantage of the day came after a Mason Walters<\/a> (SO\/Jamestown, ND) three-pointer made it 82-54 with 4:47 remaining.<\/p>\n The Jimmies shot 16-of-31 in the second half while holding Mount Marty to 8-of-34 shooting in the same span. Both teams went 12-of-17 at the foul line, and UJ made 8 of 14 three-pointers to the Lancers\u2019 three of 14.<\/p>\n Cordes led Jamestown with 19 points and sank five three-pointers. Pickens had 18 off the bench, including four threes. Talley finished with 14 and seven rebounds, while Walters and Brock Schrom<\/a> (SR\/Grand Rapids, MN) were also in double figures with 11 each. Their next opponent is the defending-champion Kansas City Chiefs, who earned a 38-24 win over Buffalo in the AFC championship game. The game will be held on Feb. 7 in Tampa.<\/p>\n Brady overcame interceptions on three straight drives by throwing for 280 yards and three touchdowns in reaching the Super Bowl for the 10th time in his career.<\/p>\n Scotty Miller grabbed a 39-yard scoring strike with just one second left in the first half, putting the Bucs ahead 21-10. Brady struck again 66 seconds into the third quarter, hitting Cameron Brate for an eight-yard TD that made it 28-10<\/p>\n The Bucs earned their franchise-record eighth consecutive road victory to reach the Super Bowl for the first time since their 2002 championship season. After winning three straight playoff games on the road, Tampa Bay will become the first team to play a Super Bowl in its own stadium.<\/p>\n Green Bay trailed 31-23 and had first-and-goal from the 8 in the last few minutes. But after Aaron Rodgers threw three straight incompletions, the Packers settled for Mason Crosby\u2019s 26-yard field goal with 2:05 left despite owning all three of its timeouts.<\/p>\n Rodgers fell to 1-4 in conference championship games as a starting quarterback. He was 33 of 48 for 346 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.<\/p>\n The Chiefs will make consecutive Super Bowl appearances after going 50 years without one. Patrick Mahomes (mah-HOHMZ\u2019) threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns, with most of it to favorite targets Travis Kelce (KEHL\u2019-see) and Tyreek Hill.<\/p>\n Kelce finished with 13 catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns, and Hill added nine catches for 172 yards. They became the first duo in NFL history with consecutive games of at least 100 yards receiving each in a single postseason.<\/p>\n Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams added short TD runs for Kansas City.<\/p>\n Josh Allen finished with 287 yards passing, two touchdowns and an interception, but a big chunk of his numbers came as the Bills tried to rally from a 38-15 deficit in the final minutes.<\/p>\n The Chiefs actually spotted the Bills a 9-0 lead, thanks in large part to Mecole Hardman\u2019s muffed punt inside their 5 that gifted Buffalo a touchdown.<\/p>\n NFL-NEWS<\/p>\n Greg Olsen announces retirement<\/p>\n UNDATED (AP) \u2014 Three-time Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen says he\u2019s ending his 14-year NFL career to join Fox as a game analyst.<\/p>\n The 35-year-old Olsen played for the Bears, Panthers and Seahawks. He spent nine seasons with Carolina, catching 524 passes for 6,463 yards and 39 touchdowns. Overall, he made 742 receptions for 8,683 yards and 60 TDs.<\/p>\n In other NFL news:<\/p>\n \u2014 The Eagles have officially announced the hiring of Nick Sirianni as their new coach. Sirianni was the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts the past three seasons.
