North Star Athletic Association Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week<\/strong> North Star Athletic Association Baseball Player-of-the-Week<\/strong> Valley City State (N.D.) swept the weekly honors. Amber Stewart was selected as the Pitcher-of-the Week, while here teammate Makenzee Stone was chosen as the Player-of-the-Week.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2013 Stewart picked up a \u00a0pair of wins as Valley City State (N.D.) went 3-0 record at Dakota State (S.D.). She pitched 4 1\/3 shutout innings with nine \u00a0strikeouts in her only start of the weekend. She also pitched 5 2\/3 innings in relief, giving up two runs (one unearned) on \u00a0three hits. For the week, Stewart worked 10 innings and limited the Trojans to two runs (one unearned) on six hits. She struck out a total of 14 batters in the game.<\/p>\n \u2013 Stone had three mult-hit \u00a0games at Dakota State (S.D.) as Valley City State (N.D.) went 3-0 record. She had two triples and drove in eight RBIs \u00a0and swiped two bases. For the week, Stone batted .700 (7-of-10 at-bats) and scored five runs. She recorded a slugging \u00a0percentage of 1.100 and reached on base by a walk three tims.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Valley City State improves to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference. Dakota State drops to 6-14 overall and 0-4 in the NSAA.<\/p>\n The Vikings got things going in the top of the third as Joelle Aiello<\/a> was hit by a pitch followed by a bunt single from Anne-Elise Gest<\/a>. Sierra Crocker<\/a> advanced the runners with a sac bunt and Marissa Hawkins<\/a> drove in Aiello with a groundout. Makenzee Stone<\/a> singled to left field to score Gest as the Vikings held a 2-0 lead in the middle of the third inning.<\/p>\n Dakota State later walked in a run in the fifth inning, and a Trojan error scored Danika Balvik<\/a> in the sixth.<\/p>\n Dakota State got on the board with a solo home run from Alexus Foster in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn’t get closer as the Vikings completed the four-game sweep.<\/p>\n Emily Smith<\/a> got the win in the circle after pitching a complete game. She allowed one run on four hits, walked one, and struck out 12. Makenzee Stone<\/a> and Andrea Rodriguez<\/a> each recorded three hits and one RBI for the Vikings.<\/p>\n Xitlali Lopez got the loss for Dakota State, pitching 5.0 innings for the Trojans. She allowed three earned runs on nine hits, walked three and struck out six.<\/p>\n UP NEXT: <\/strong>Valley City State is slated to play a doubleheader at Jamestown on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Game is subject to change dependent on the weather forecast.<\/p>\n Monday<\/p>\n VCSU Baseball<\/p>\n At Dakota State<\/p>\n <\/p>\n MADISON, S.D. (VCSU)<\/a> \u2013 The Viking baseball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning Monday, rallying for a 9-7 victory in the series finale at Dakota State University.<\/p>\n VCSU trailed 6-1 early in the game and 7-5 entering the final inning before completing the comeback victory. JT Reed<\/a> opened the inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit to one run. Drew Nixon<\/a>‘s RBI double tied the game at 7-7, and then Chase Feller<\/a> and Jayden Shipman<\/a> each had RBI hits to give the Vikings the lead.<\/p>\n Dakota State won game one on Monday, holding off a late Viking rally in a 12-11 game. The Vikings and Trojans split the four-game series to start conference play.<\/p>\n Valley City State is now 9-16 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Dakota State is 9-9 overall and 2-2 in the NSAA.<\/p>\n Up next:<\/strong> Valley City State travels to Dickinson State for a four-game conference series on Friday and Saturday. The Vikings were supposed to play Wednesday at Concordia-Moorhead, but that game has been canceled due to weather.<\/p>\n Dakota State 12, VCSU 11<\/u><\/strong> The Vikings scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning, but left the bases loaded to end the game.<\/p>\n The game had several momentum swings and big innings. The Vikings started fast with four runs in the first inning, capped by a two-run home run from Dustin Mertz<\/a>. Dakota State responded with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 7-4 lead.<\/p>\n VCSU tied the game in the third inning when Ryan Reynolds<\/a> went deep for a three-run home run. Dakota State then scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 12-7 lead into the final inning. Jorun Hamre<\/a> hit a two-run home run to start VCSU’s final push, and Drew Nixon<\/a>‘s pinch-hit RBI double put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Dakota State worked out of the jam though, getting a pop out and ground out to end the Viking threat.<\/p>\n Hamre finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs to lead the Viking offense, which collected nine hits. Mertz was 1-for-2 with two walks, three runs and two RBIs. Reynolds went 1-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, and Gedeon Ellis<\/a> added two hits and also drew two walks.<\/p>\n Matthew Suda<\/a> started on the mound and took the loss, giving up nine hits and 10 runs over three innings of work. William Hlady<\/a> pitched two innings in relief, allowing three hits and two runs. Top seed Baylor and No. 2 Houston are two of those teams after moving on to the national semifinals.<\/p>\n Baylor has reached the Final Four for the first time in 71 years by getting 22 points from MaCio Teague (MAY\u2019-see-oh teeg) and a dominating defensive performance from Davion (DAY’-vee-ahn) Mitchell in an 81-72 victory against Arkansas. The Huskies will be joined by a team making its first-ever appearance in the national semifinals.<\/p>\n Paige Bueckers (BEH’-kurz) scored 28 points and the first overall seed used a huge run spanning the final two quarters to beat No. 2 Baylor, 69-67. July 19 is the deadline for early-entry candidates to withdraw from the draft.<\/p>\n The draft would occur one week after this season\u2019s NBA Finals if the series goes the full seven games.<\/p>\n NHL..<\/p>\n SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) \u2014 Erik Karlsson scored twice in regulation and then added the deciding goal in the eighth round of the shootout to lead the San Jose Sharks past the Minnesota Wild 4-3. (AP) \u2014 Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad is likely done for the season after undergoing surgery Monday to repair what the team calls a fracture in his lower extremities.<\/p>\n The Panthers said that Ekblad will need 12 weeks to recover from the injury, which occurred during Sunday\u2019s 4-1 win over the Stars. He was fitted for an air cast on his left leg and taken off the ice on a stretcher.<\/p>\n Ekblad\u2019s 11 goals were tied for the league lead among all defensemen.<\/p>\n NASCAR-BRISTOL<\/p>\n Logano first on dirt<\/p>\n BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) \u2014 Joey Logano took the checkered flag for NASCAR\u2019s first Cup Series race at a dirt track in 50 years.<\/p>\n Visibility was next to nothing during this Monday dust storm at Bristol Motor Speedway, but Logano clung to the familiar bottom lane around the bullring to collect the checkered flag on this NASCAR experiment.<\/p>\n Logano got a jump on Denny Hamlin on the overtime restart to earn his third career victory at Bristol. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished second, followed by Hamlin, Daniel Suarez and Ryan Newman.<\/p>\n This was not the Bristol of old. GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The Missouri Valley Football Conference has canceled the game between North Dakota and Missouri State scheduled Saturday in Grand Forks, because of the coronavirus. The league says the move was due to positive COVID-19 test results and subsequent contact tracing among North Dakota\u2019s players, coaches, managers and staff. The game cannot be rescheduled because the two teams do not share any future open weekends. It\u2019s the second straight week that the Fighting Hawks have been shut down because of their virus tests. Last week\u2019s postponement of the game at Youngstown State has been rescheduled to April 17. North Dakota won its first four games of the spring season before losing to North Dakota State 34-13 on March 20.<\/p>\n
