Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 The Jamestown City Fire Department was called to a smoke report from a roof vent at an unoccupied house about 12:15-p.m. Saturday at 712 4th Avenue Northwest.<\/p>\n
The smoke was coming from an electric wire, in the home, while the new owner was working\u00a0 there.<\/p>\n
Six city fire units and with 21 firefighters were on the scene just under two hours.<\/p>\n

Hazelton (NDHP) The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, a 46 year old Hazelton man was seriously injured Saturday when his motorcycle left the roadway on Highway 83 six mile north of Hazelton about 10:22-p.m., Saturday.<\/p>\n
The Harley Davidson was traveling east bound on Hwy 83 north of Hazelton.\u00a0 46 year old Tory Moch of Hazelton,\u00a0 drove off the west shoulder of the roadway. The motorcycle struck a delineator pole and concrete culvert. The motorcycle overturned ejecting Moch.\u00a0 and motorcycle came to rest in the bottom of the west ditch. The rider was air lifted to Sanford in Bismarck. His name was not immediately released.<\/p>\n
Assisting at the scene were, the Emmons County SO, and Hazelton Ambulance\/Rescue<\/p>\n
The crash remains under investigation by the NDHP.<\/p>\n

Doug Burgum Friday signed legislation that creates common-sense liability protections to shield health care providers, businesses and others from frivolous claims related to exposure to COVID-19.<\/p>\n Those joining Burgum for the signing of House Bill 1175 included the bill\u2019s prime sponsor, Rep. Michael Howe, Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner, Assistant Senate Majority Leader Jerry Klein, and Arik Spencer, president and CEO of the Greater North Dakota Chamber.<\/p>\n Burgum noted that North Dakota health care providers and businesses did their best to protect their patients, customers and team members through extremely challenging conditions and ever-changing rules and recommendations during the pandemic.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s important that we provide common-sense protections for those North Dakotans who were doing everything they could,\u201d Burgum said before signing the bill. \u201cLegislation like House Bill 1175 will protect these businesses, organizations, medical providers and educational providers from frivolous lawsuits arising from COVID-19 exposure, while still allowing claims in situations that involved ill intentions or reckless acts.\u201d<\/p>\n House Bill 1175 protects health care providers, businesses and other facilities from civil liability for any act in response to COVID-19 that causes or contributes to the death or injury of a person. It also protects an individual who designs, manufactures, labels, sells and distributes disinfecting or cleaning supplies that protect from COVID-19, from civil liability for personal injury, death or property damage. The bill does not protect against actions that constitute willful and wanton misconduct, or reckless or intentional infliction of harm.<\/p>\n The legislation applies retroactively to Jan. 1, 2020, covering the entire COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n \u201cWith a higher and higher percentage of people getting vaccinated, we know that the light at the end of the tunnel grows closer, and this legislation will allow the health care system, businesses and our entire state to move forward with this protection and emerge stronger than ever,\u201d Burgum said.<\/p>\n The governor thanked Howe, Klein and fellow bill sponsors, Reps. Glenn Bosch, Bill Devlin, Mike Lefor, Corey Mock and Sen. Randy Burckhard, as well as Wardner and House Majority Leader Chet Pollert, and the business and medical communities for their support and work on the legislation. The bill was approved 77-17 in the House and 41-6 in the Senate.<\/p>\n MINOT, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a passenger on a motorcycle was killed when the bike slammed into a railroad crossing gate in Minot. The patrol says the accident happened shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday. The motorcycle approached the crossing where the lighted crossing arms were down. Authorities say both the driver, a 42-year-old man, and the passenger, a 42-year-old woman, struck their heads on the crossing arm causing them to be thrown from the motorcycle. The woman was killed and the man was treated and released from the hospital. The patrol says the two were not wearing helmets.<\/p>\n MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) \u2014 Police are investigating hate messages that were found spray-painted on the outside of a mosque in the Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota metropolitan area. Officers were dispatched to the Moorhead Fargo Islamic Community Center, which is located in Moorhead, about 5:20 a.m. Sunday. Police said the grafiti was found in several areas. Video surveillance from the building captured images of a suspect wearing a camouflage jacket and dark ski mask. The investigation by Moorhead police and Fargo office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is ongoing. Moorhead Mayor Shelly Carlson said in a statement that hate \u201cwill not have a home\u201d in her city.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Attorneys for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in the Dakotas say the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers unlawfully authorized the Dakota Access pipeline without fully assessing the risks and are asking a judge to shut down the flow of oil while the Corps conducts a second environmental review. Standing Rock and other tribes filed a response in federal court Friday to a document by the owners of the pipeline who said shuttering the pipeline would be a crushing economic blow to several entities. Standing Rock says the figures by Dakota Access \u201crely on unsupported hearsay and exaggeration.” U.S. District Judge James Boasberg has not yet ruled on Standing Rock’s motion for an injunction to shut down the pipeline.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Bismarck police are investigating a train-pedestrian fatality that happened early Sunday in the city\u2019s downtown. Bismarck Police Sgt. Scott Betz says officers were called at 12:08 a.m. to the crossing at South Fifth Street. The Bismarck Tribune reports that a man in his early 20s was killed. Betz did not describe the circumstances of the fatality and declined to release the man\u2019s name. Police do not believe that was any foul play. No other injuries were reported.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Investigators are trying to determine what caused two fires at a Grand Forks motel. The Grand Forks Fire Department said in a news release Saturday that firefighters were dispatched to the Ambassador Motel about 9:30 p.m. Friday. They discovered fires in two areas of the building and put them out. The motel was vacant and no one was hurt. The department said the damage is estimated at more than $30,000.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A former Mandan official has been charged with identity theft for allegedly paying utility bills with money taken from a 92-year-old woman’s account. The Bismarck Tribune reports that 64-year-old Robert Christensen of Bismarck faces two felony charges of unauthorized use of personal identifying information and theft. According to a police affidavit, Christensen made seven Montana-Dakota Utilities payments from the woman’s account between 2017 and 2020 totaling nearly $2,000. Authorities have not said who the woman is or explain how she and Christian might be connected. Christensen served on the Mandan City Commission from 1991 to 1996 and was a Morton County commissioner from 1999 until 2006. He ran unsuccessfully for Mandan School Board in 2008.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A North Dakota legislator has been charged with misdemeanor drunken driving. The Bismarck Tribune reports that House Assistant Majority Leader Scott Louser was charged Friday and will make his initial court appearance on May 12. Court documents show that the 49-year-old Minot Republican’s blood alcohol content when he was pulled over April 16 in Bismarck was 0.117%, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08%. He failed three field sobriety tests and refused another before he was taken to jail. He also mistakenly referred to a legislative intern who was with him as his attorney.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In sports<\/p>\n Valley City\u00a0 (VCSU<\/a>)\u00a0 \u2013 VCSU junior Zachary Co<\/a>\u00a0qualified for nationals in the hammer throw on Saturday during the Northern State Spring Open in Aberdeen, S.D.<\/p>\n Co unleashed a top throw of 53.43 meters during the meet, setting a new personal record by more than nine feet and surpassing the NAIA \u2018A\u2019 Standard of 53.00 meters. Co\u2019s performance was good for second place at the large meet that had more than 40 athletes in some of the throwing events.<\/p>\n He also threw a new personal outdoor record in the shot put on Saturday with his meet-winning toss of 17.06 meters. That ranks him fifth nationally in the NAIA.<\/p>\n Co has now punched his ticket to compete in both the shot put and hammer throw at the NAIA National Meet from May 26-28 in Gulf Shores, Ala. FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Dominic Gonnella ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns and Jalen Bussey ran for 143 yards and North Dakota State rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to smash Eastern Washington University 42-20 in an opening-round game of the FCS playoffs. The Bison advance to the quarterfinals to face No. 2-seed Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas on May 1. Eastern Washington scored three touchdowns in its first three possessions and built a 20-7 lead. The Bison then put an end to EWU\u2019s upset bid establishing its running game and containing EWU\u2019s offense.
