One tree, an Autumn Splendor Buckeye, was donated by Jeff Moe, to remember his uncle, a long time resident, Lloyd Miller. Lloyd was very active member of the town, being involved in numerous organizations and on the Valley City Public School Board for 12 years.<\/p>\n

\nReed Butz<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Valley City State (N.D.) \u2013 6\u20192\u2033 \u2013 Junior \u2013 pitcher \u2013 Rockford, Ill.\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Butz tossed eight shutout innings as Valley City State (N.D.) went 4-1 record for the week.\u00a0 He pitched two shutout innings with two strikeouts, despite a 5-3 extra-innings setback at NCAA Division I North Dakota State.\u00a0 He followed up with a victory over Presentation (S.D.) after pitching six scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts.\u00a0 For the week, Butz limited its opponents to .148 batting average (4 hits allowed) and tallied 13 strikeouts.\u00a0 He did not allow a run.<\/p>\n

North Star Athletic Association Baseball Player-of-the-Week<\/u><\/strong>
\nJorun Hamre<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Valley City State (N.D.) \u2013 6\u20194\u2033 \u2013 Senior \u2013 first baseman \u2013 Leonard, N.D.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Hamre set a new single-season home record as Valley City State (N.D.) went 4-1 record for the week.\u00a0 He blasted four home runs for the week, leading the North Star Athletic Association with 15 home runs this season.\u00a0 Hamre recorded a batting average of .444 (8-of-18 at the plate) and scored eight times.\u00a0 He slugged 1.167 (four home runs, three singles, and a double) and registered an on-base percentage of .500 for the week.<\/p>\n

Valley City\u00a0 (VCSU)<\/a> \u00a0 Valley City State swept the final edition of the North Star Athletic Association\u2019s Softball <\/strong>Players of the Week. Emily Smith<\/a>\u00a0was named Pitcher of the Week and\u00a0Jessica Husband<\/a>\u00a0was chosen as Player of the Week. It is the fifth time this season that the Vikings have swept the weekly honor.<\/p>\n

\nEmily Smith<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Valley City State (N.D.) \u2013 5\u20197\u2033 \u2013 Senior \u2013 pitcher \u2013 Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Smith earned three victories on the week, including two shutouts as Valley City State (N.D.) went 6-0 record for the week.\u00a0 The Vikings claimed the North Star Athletic Association regular-season title as Smith tossed a complete game with 11 strikeouts and allowed one run on four hits in 9-1 victory at Mayville State (N.D.).\u00a0 For the week, Smith gave up just one run and finished all three games in five innings.\u00a0 She struck out 25 batters and held its opponents to a .113 batting average.<\/p>\n

North Star Athletic Association Softball Player-of-the-Week<\/u><\/strong>
\nJessica Husband<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Valley City State (N.D.) \u2013 5\u20195\u2033 \u2013 Junior \u2013 outfielder \u2013 Kingwood Park, Texas<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Husband recorded a .765 batting average and a 1.353 slugging percentage after going 13-of-17 at the plate with three home runs, fueling Valley City State (N.D.) to a 6-0 record for the week.\u00a0 She drove in 11 runs and scored eight runs for the week.\u00a0 Husband also had a double and recorded at least two hits in each of the six games.<\/p>\n

Valley City\u00a0 (VCSU<\/a>)\u00a0\u00a0 Valley City State University defensive lineman Marshaun Jones<\/a> has been named to the AFCA NAIA Coaches’ All-America Teams announced Wednesday by the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA).<\/p>\n

Jones was named 2nd Team All-American with Wednesday’s release. He was one of eight defensive lineman to receive All-American honors.<\/p>\n

VCSU linebacker Sal Avila<\/a> was named Honorable Mention All-American on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

A native of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Jones received the 2nd Team honor after recording 51 tackles in VCSU’s seven games this season. He also had four sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss. Jones is a two-time First Team All-Conference selection in the North Star Athletic Association. He plans to return next year for his final season of eligibility.<\/p>\n

Avila, a junior from El Paso, Texas, was the NSAA Defensive Player of the Year after recording 70 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss over VCSU’s seven games.<\/p>\n

The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams for all five divisions of college football. The AFCA All-America teams are the only teams chosen exclusively by the coaches themselves.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 North Dakota will issue more deer hunting licenses this year than it has in the past 10 years. The Game and Fish Department will make 72,000 licenses available to hunters, the sixth consecutive year the number has increased and up 3,150 from last year. The department has been moving toward a goal of issuing at least 75,000 licenses annually. The number issued this year might have been higher, but drought conditions persist across the state, affecting reproduction. The deadline to apply for a license is June 2. North Dakota\u2019s 2021 deer gun season opens Nov. 5 at noon and continues through Nov. 21.<\/p>\n

ATLANTA (AP) \u2014 The firing of the former Atlanta police officer who\u2019s charged with murder in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks has been reversed. Garrett Rolfe was fired in June, a day after he shot Brooks in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant. The Atlanta Civil Service Board on Wednesday released its decision on Rolfe\u2019s appeal of his firing. Based on the city’s failure to comply with some provisions of its code and on witness testimony, the board says it concluded Rolfe wasn’t given due process before he was fired.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 No. 3 House Republican Liz Cheney is clinging to her post as party leaders are lining up behind an heir apparent for her job. Former President Donald Trump became the latest to do that. He issued a statement Wednesday giving his \u201cCOMPLETE and TOTAL Endorsement\u201d to New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik. No. 2 House GOP leader Steve Scalise is also backing Stefanik. Their endorsements signal that the fallout over Cheney’s repeated clashes with Trump were becoming too much for her to overcome. A secret ballot vote by House Republicans on replacing Cheney could come as early as next week.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The top U.S. general says the military must do more to improve career opportunities for Black Americans. They remain vastly underrepresented in some areas, including among Air Force pilots and in the top ranks of the military. Army Gen. Mark Milley is chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He told a Howard University ROTC commissioning ceremony on Wednesday that diversity is an important strength of the military. But, he added, “We must get better.\u201d He said only two of 41 four-star generals are Black, even though the overall military is 20 percent Black.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 The New York City public school system has designated Oct. 11 as Italian Heritage Day\/Indigenous People\u2019s Day. The renaming of Columbus Day is an effort to please both Italian Americans who celebrate Christopher Columbus and racial justice advocates who accuse him of genocide. Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday that turning Columbus Day into a day to honor both Italian American heritage and Indigenous peoples is \u201ca good way forward.\u201d Gov. Andrew Cuomo disagreed, saying it was insulting to force the two groups to share a holiday.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Many Broadway productions are scrambling to resume ticket sales in the coming days to welcome theater-goers this fall after city and state leaders have green-lit a reopening of the Great White Way at full capacity. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says Broadway theaters can reopen Sept. 14 and will be allowed to decide their own entry requirements, like whether people must prove they\u2019ve been vaccinated to attend a show. Selling tickets will allow theaters to gauge interest before stages open, said Robert Mujica, Cuomo\u2019s budget director. The Broadway that reopens will look different, with \u201cFrozen\u201d and \u201cMean Girls\u201d deciding not to restart.<\/p>\n

(AP) Spain\u2019s health minister says the European country has detected 11 cases of the new strain of the coronavirus first identified in India. Minister Carolina Darias says the cases were two separate outbreaks discovered by health officials in recent days. She added a plane carrying medical supplies, including oxygen and breathing machines, for hard-hit India will leave on Thursday. Last week, Spain\u2019s government approved a shipment of seven tons of medical supplies to help India combat it surging wave of infections.<\/p>\n

TORONTO (AP) \u2014 Canada\u2019s health regulators say they’ve become the first to authorize Pfizer\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine for people as young as 12. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also is expected to authorize Pfizer\u2019s vaccine for young by next week, setting up shots for many before the beginning of the next school year. Wednesday”s announcement comes barely a month after the company found that its shot provided protection for the younger group. Preliminary results from that study of 2,260 U.S. volunteers ages 12 to 15 showing there were no cases of COVID-19 among fully vaccinated adolescents compared with 18 among those given dummy shots.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 The Biden administration nullified a Trump-era rule Wednesday that would have made it easier to classify workers as independent contractors. The Labor Department\u2019s decision came just two days before the Trump-era rule was supposed to take effect. The move means the Labor Department will continue to use existing rules under the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act to determine whether a worker should be classified as an independent contractor. Under the existing system, app-based companies such as Uber, DoorDash and Instacart had already been able to classify their gig workers as independent contractors. But those companies had applauded the Trump administration rule, arguing that the Depression-era law was outdated and did not provide the flexibility demanded by the digital era.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
