As I began writing last Saturday, I wrote about dry ground and fire danger.\u00a0Then Sunday morning we were Blessed with a nice rain, .96 of an inch at our house, so I had to toss my initial writing!<\/p>\n

We can all be grateful for the moisture as many of our area\u2019s crops were reaching critical stages.\u00a0For those of us who have been struggling with all the pollen in the air, perhaps the rain rid the air of at least some pollen.\u00a0Yeah!<\/p>\n

Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while in the military serving their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle; the \u201cultimate sacrifice\u201d. Memorial Day 2021 is May 31st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Names of honorary volunteers who served in Valley City since 1895 is now on display at the Fire Hall.<\/p>\n

Fire Chief Scott Magnuson says this is a a way to honor past, present and future firefighters.<\/p>\n

The firefighter statue was made in Minnesota, and two local individuals\u00a0 assisted with the project.<\/p>\n

Chief Magnuson says the community is invited to attend the\u00a0 Firefighters Honorary Dedication ceremony to be held During Rally in the Valley events and activities on Saturday June 19 at noon\u00a0 at the entrance of the Fire Hall.<\/p>\n

A Brass Bell made in North Carolina will also be a part of the dedication. area.<\/p>\n

\"\"Valley City\u00a0 (VCSU Newsletter)\u00a0 VCSU\u2019s Great Plains STEM Education Center (GPSEC) hosted two groups of Gussner Elementary 5th<\/sup> grade students from Jamestown for a session in LEGO Robotics on May 11.\u00a0 The students were accompanied by their teachers, Anita Frey and Tami Maus.<\/p>\n

The students engaged in the building and coding of multiple robots using LEGO\u2019s WeDo 2.0 robotics kits. The activities are designed to increase students\u2019 curiosity and science skills, while also enhancing their engineering design and computer coding skills. During their visit to VCSU the students also had the opportunity to view a planetarium show and tour VCSU\u2019s Medicine Wheel Park.<\/p>\n

The visit to GPSEC has become an annual event for Gussner 5th<\/sup> graders. After the sessions, Ms. Frey said, \u201cI just wanted to thank you again for the STEM activities yesterday! The kids loved it! They already asked when they can come back! Thank you so much for your time and patience with our students! See you again next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Air travel has picked up in North Dakota, but not to the level it was before the coronavirus pandemic hit. The state\u2019s eight commercial service airports saw a significant increase in passenger numbers last month compared to April 2020. The state Aeronautics Commission says the airports in Bismarck, Minot, Williston, Dickinson, Grand Forks, Fargo, Devils Lake and Jamestown collectively had about 62,000 passenger boardings last month. That compares with about 92,000 in April 2019. In April of last year, just about 5,000 passengers traveled by air, the lowest monthly total since record keeping began four decades ago.<\/p>\n

The monthly reports shows that, in April this year, Jamestown airline boardings were 761 compared to 41 in April 2020, effected by the COVID-19 pandemic, a decrease of 1770.73 percent. The boarding percentage change from 2019 to 2021 was an increase of 10.52 percent.<\/p>\n

Year to date through April 2021 boarding were 2,531 compared to 2,456 through April of 2020, an increase of three percent.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Fargo police have identified a man who was fatally shot outside a nightclub on the west side of the city. Police say 28-year-old Dominque Dewayne McNair was killed Sunday in the parking lot of the Africa Restaurant and Nightclub. McNair worked at the club, police said. He does not have a permanent address. Investigators continue to conduct interviews, review video and work other tips in the case. Police say there were several vehicles and people seen leaving the parking lot at the time of the shooting, but no further details have been released.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Parts of North Dakota are experiencing exceptional drought, and the number of wildfires in the state has topped the 1,000 mark. The U.S. Drought Monitor map shows 17% of North Dakota in exceptional drought, the worst of four categories. The affected area is in the central and north central parts of the state. It\u2019s the first time this year that exceptional drought has been in North Dakota. It\u2019s the lone spot in the country outside of the Desert Southwest where it\u2019s present.<\/p>\n

(AP)\u00a0 New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is promising a return to normal for the nation\u2019s largest public school system. De Blasio said Monday that classrooms will open for in-person instruction in September with no remote option. The mayor said \u201cIt\u2019s time for everyone to come back.\u201d After closing schools in March 2020, New York City was one of the first large U.S. cities to reopen school buildings in the fall of that year, but the majority of parents chose online-only learning for their children. De Blasio’s announcement came as officials elsewhere in the country were promising a return to classrooms as well.<\/p>\n

(AP)\u00a0 Superintendent Austin Beutner announced Monday the Los Angeles Unified School District will start the new school year next fall with on-campus, in-person instruction for all students five days a week but will retain an online option. Beutner, who leads the nation\u2019s second-largest school district, said elementary school students will have full days of instruction with their teacher and classmates while middle and high school students will change classrooms for each period. Students and staff will continue to wear masks until more children are vaccinated. After-school programs will be available to students from the end of the school day until 6 p.m.<\/p>\n

LANSING, Mich. (AP) \u2014 Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer\u2019s administration has rescinded a rule limiting restaurant tables to no more than six people. The move comes a day after she apologized for violating the COVID-19 regulation while gathering with friends at an East Lansing bar. The Democratic governor has said tables at the Landshark Bar & Grill were pushed together as more people arrived in her party of fully vaccinated people. A revised order no longer includes the six-patrons-per-table provision, effective June 1. The state health department issued it Monday. Whitmer announced last week the planned easing of capacity restrictions but didn’t specify if other changes were coming.<\/p>\n

STRESA, Italy (AP) \u2014 The investigation into Italy\u2019s cable car disaster that killed 14 people will focus on why the lead cable snapped and why the emergency brake didn\u2019t engage and stop the cabin from carreeinng backwards. That’s according to the lead prosecutor, who is looking into why the cabin then pulled off the support line and crashed to the ground. Verbania Prosecutor Olimpia Bossi outlined the contours of her investigation as the lone survivor of Sunday\u2019s horrific tragedy, a 5-year-old Israeli boy living in Italy, remained hospitalized in Turin in intensive care with multiple broken bones. The disaster occurred in one of the most picturesque spots in northern Italy, the Mottarone mountaintop overlooking Lake Maggiore and other lakes near Switzerland.<\/p>\n

SOUTHWICK, Mass. (AP) \u2014 A Massachusetts woman who accidentally tossed out a $1 million lottery ticket eventually collected her winnings thanks to the kindness and honesty of the owners of the store where she bought it. Lea Rose Fiega bought the scratch-off ticket in March at the Lucky Stop convenience store in Southwick near her work. She was in a hurry and didn’t properly check to see if the ticket was a winner. Abhi Shah, the son of the store\u2019s owners, was checking a pile of discarded tickets a few days later and found Fiega’s winner.
