\"\"Mandan\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2014 The 2021 Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at noon Monday, May 31, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, 6.5 miles south of Mandan on North Dakota Highway 1806. This annual event, hosted by the North Dakota National Guard, honors all deceased American servicemen and women and is free to the public. This year\u2019s theme is \u201cKorean War \u2013 Never Forgotten.<\/p>\n

Participants are asked to observe COVID-19 precautions and arrive early due to anticipated large crowds and motorcycle honor run. Lawn chairs are encouraged due to limited seating and attendees are encouraged to sit with family members and friends in clusters while practicing social distancing.<\/p>\n

Handicap-marked vehicles are encouraged to arrive before 11 a.m., and drivers should ensure handicap credentials and decals are readily visible to parking attendants. Shuttle vehicles will be available to transport attendees from parking areas closer to the ceremony area. Attendees are encouraged not to drive large vehicles, such as recreational vehicles, campers or tow trailers due to constrained parking.<\/p>\n

Request individuals not attending the ceremony, but dropping off flowers for Memorial Day grave decorations leave the facility by 10:00 a.m.<\/p>\n

The ceremony will be live streamed at ndguard.nd.gov <\/em>and will begin with a flyover salute performed by two UH-72A Lakota helicopters at approximately 12:03 p.m.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s keynote speaker is Russell Hawkins and the emcee is Sgt.1st Class Mark Steberg. Hawkins\u2019 biography, along with the ceremony agenda, is included in the 2021 Memorial Day program<\/em>. In keeping with the theme, Hawkins will focus his remarks on this stepfather, Master Sgt. Woodrow \u201cWoody\u201d Wilson Keeble, Medal of Honor recipient for actions during the Korean War.<\/p>\n

Rendering remarks are Gov. Doug Burgum, Sen. John Hoeven, and Maj. Gen. Al Dohrmann, N.D. National Guard adjutant general.<\/p>\n

The North Dakota Army National Guard\u2019s Fargo-based 188th Army Band\u2019s \u201cBrass Quintet\u201d will perform \u201cAmazing Grace\u201d as well as pre-ceremony music. Also participating in the ceremony are local Veteran and civic organizations and the Bismarck Mounted Police, which will feature a caparisoned riderless horse with boots reversed in the stirrups to symbolize a fallen warrior that can no longer ride into battle.<\/p>\n

The national anthem will be performed by Colleen Reinhardt with Taps by Eric Bender. AMVETS Post #9 will render a rifle-salute volley and the North Dakota National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team will execute a 21-gun cannon salute with a World War I-era French 75-millimeter cannon. Chaplain Greg Carr, Crisis Care Chaplaincy, Bismarck, and Chaplain (Col.) David Johnson, North Dakota National Guard, will provide the opening and closing prayers, respectively.<\/p>\n

In support of this ceremony, the Viet Nam Vets\/Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club is organizing an Honor Run at \u201cThe Shop\u201d (131 Airport Road) in Bismarck. Participants will leave Bismarck at 11 a.m., head west on Main Street, cross the Liberty Memorial Bridge to Mandan\u2019s Memorial Highway. After turning west on Mandan\u2019s 3rd Street SE, the motorcyclists will head south on North Dakota Highway 1806 until they reach the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Please arrive on your motorcycle between 10 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. All motorcyclists and passengers are invited to participate and no pre-coordination is required.<\/p>\n

Unlike previous years, there will be no formal Memorial Day program at the Heritage Center, North Dakota capitol grounds. Instead participants are invited to an informal social conducted at the Heritage Center\u2019s Missouri River Event Center beginning at 9:30 a.m. with activities beginning at 10:00 a.m. consisting of a small program, Wall of Honor presentations, and ceremonial wreath laying. This will allow participants sufficient time to travel to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery for the noon ceremony.<\/p>\n

A bus, parked near the east entrance to the Heritage Center, will transport people to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery ceremony, leaving by 10:45 a.m. Participants are also invited to watch the cemetery\u2019s ceremony live stream at the Russell Reid auditorium at noon.<\/p>\n

In honor of Memorial Day, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is again hosting a Military Appreciation Day by offering free admission to military members, Veterans and their families.<\/p>\n

The North Dakota Veterans Cemetery was established by an act of the 1989 North Dakota Legislative Assembly. The cemetery was opened July 1992, and is operated by the Office of the North Dakota adjutant general.<\/p>\n

\"\"Jamestown \u00a0(JRMC) \u2013 During our nation\u2019s pandemic, one nurse put the needs of others before her own.<\/p>\n

The nurses at Jamestown Regional Medical Center selected Jessica Linderman, registered nurse and surgery center manager, as its 2021 Nora Melvold Paulson Excellence in Leadership Award recipient.<\/p>\n

Linderman joined the JRMC family in 2018.<\/p>\n

JRMC Chief Nursing Officer Trisha Jungels, says, \u201cJess is a servant leader; she puts other people\u2019s needs before her own and positively influences those around her. She actively contributes to the personal development and performance of her team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linderman supported the hospital and the community throughout the pandemic by acting as a steward for the organization\u2019s resources. Jungels said she planned and managed all available resources for the betterment and prosperity of the organization, employees, and patients.<\/p>\n

Jungles says, Jess is successful in pulling people together for a common purpose. She creates a feeling of belonging to something bigger than each individual and fosters team spirit and a sense of community.\u00a0 A great example of this was during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Jess\u2019 leadership and relationships allowed the Surgery Center to remain safe for patients to receive care, employees to work and providers to practice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linderman lives in Carrington with her husband and three children.<\/p>\n

Nora Paulson History<\/strong>
\nThe Nora Paulson Award recipient is voted upon by his or her peers. The award provides an annual grant to a JRMC nurse who consistently embodies a commitment to excellence in nursing education and clinical care. A plaque with the names of all recipients is located on the lower level near the education center of JRMC.<\/p>\n

Brian and Nancy Spector established this award nine years ago through a named-expendable fund with the JRMC Foundation. The award honors the memory and legacy of Brian\u2019s grandmother, Nora Paulson, RN. Paulson dedicated her life to clinical excellence programs at what was then Jamestown Hospital.<\/p>\n

A trooper made a traffic stop for speeding on I-94 near Jamestown and cited a woman for going 90 in a 75 MPH zone. The woman told the officer she was driving across the country with two goats in her car and they were distracting her.<\/p>\n

Another trooper stopped the same driver for speeding later near Casselton.<\/p>\n

\"\"BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The coronavirus pandemic did not slow North Dakotans\u2019 appetite for gambling, with more than $881 million wagered on games of chance in the state in fiscal 2020. Data shows that’s a more than 50% increase from the previous year. North Dakota gambling regulator Deb McDaniel says \u201cthe pandemic has not hurt gaming whatsoever.\u201d Electronic pull tab gambling accounted for nearly $711 million of wagers in fiscal 2020. That amount has grown nearly tenfold in just two years. McDaniel believes gambling wagers will easily exceed $1 billion in the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s U.S. Drought Monitor map shows much of southwestern North Dakota has been downgraded from extreme drought to severe. Extreme drought covers 59% of the state, down from 68% last week. The worst of four drought categories is exceptional That is up slightly from the previous week and now covers about 18% of the state. North Dakota is the only spot in the country, outside of the Desert Southwest, with exceptional drought.<\/p>\n

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) \u2014 A jury has found a farm laborer guilty of murder in the abduction and killing of a University of Iowa student who vanished while out for a run in 2018. The jury on Friday found Cristhian Bahena Rivera guilty of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Mollie Tibbetts, a friendly and bright 20-year-old who was studying to become a child psychologist. Bahena Rivera, who came to the U.S. illegally from Mexico as a teenager, will be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The verdict comes after a two-week trial at the Scott County Courthouse in Davenport, in a case that inflamed public anger over illegal immigration and concerns about random violence against women.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Kids at summer camps can skip wearing masks outdoors, with some exceptions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted the guidance Friday. Children who aren\u2019t fully vaccinated should still wear masks outside when they\u2019re in crowds or in sustained close contact with others \u2013 and when they are inside. But fully vaccinated kids need not wear masks, indoors or outside. PHILADELPHIA (AP) \u2014 Actor Bill Cosby has been denied parole after refusing to participate in sex offender programs during his nearly three years in state prison in Pennsylvania. The 83-year-old Cosby has long said he would serve the full 10-year sentence rather than acknowledge wrongdoing and take part in the programs. This is the first year he was eligible for parole under the three- to 10-year sentence handed down in 2018. Cosby meanwhile hopes the state Supreme Court will reverse his conviction.
