MacLeod achieved stardom as Murray Slaughter, the sardonic TV news writer on the 1970s comedy \u201cThe Mary Tyler Moore Show.\u201d He went to a lead role as the cheerful Captain Stubing on \u201cThe Love Boat.\u201d Early in his career, he was featured on \u201cMcHale\u2019s Navy\u201d from 1962 to 1964 as seaman Joseph \u201cHappy\u201d Haines.
