ABOUT ZEBRA MUSSELS<\/strong><\/p>\nZebra mussels are dime-sized mollusks with striped, sharp-edged, two-part shells. They can produce huge populations in a short time and do not require a host fish to reproduce. A large female zebra mussel can produce 1 million eggs, and then fertilized eggs develop into microscopic veligers that are invisible to the naked eye. Veligers drift in the water for at least two weeks before they settle out as young mussels which quickly grow to adult size and reproduce within a few months.<\/p>\n
After settling, zebra mussels develop byssal threads that attach their shells to submerged hard surfaces such as rocks, piers, and flooded timber. They also attach to pipes, water intake structures, boat hulls, propellers, and submerged parts of outboard motors. As populations increase, they can clog intake pipes and prevent water treatment and electrical generating plants from drawing water. Removing large numbers of zebra mussels to ensure adequate water flow can be labor-intensive and costly.<\/p>\n
Zebra mussels are native to the Black and Caspian seas of western Asia and eastern Europe and were spread around the world in the ballast water of cargo ships. They were discovered in Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River in 1988 and quickly spread throughout the Great Lakes and other rivers including the Mississippi, Illinois, Ohio, Tennessee, Arkansas and Hudson. They were first discovered in North Dakota in 2015 in the Red River. Moving water in boats has been identified as a likely vector, as has importing used boat lifts and docks.<\/p>\n
NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Authorities say a 23-year-old man driving an all-terrain vehicle and a boy riding alongside him were killed in a collision with a pickup truck in northwestern North Dakota. The North Dakota Highway Patrol said the crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. about 12 miles north of New Town, in Mountrail County. The pickup was traveling south on state Highway 1804 when it struck the passenger side of the ATV as the driver attempted to cross the highway. Both vehicles rolled into the west ditch. Both occupants of the ATV were pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup driver was not hurt.<\/p>\n

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The military says a Grand Forks Air Force Base airman drowned in the Red Lake River near Red Lake Falls, Minnesota. The Air Force says 24-year-old Nestor Chua Jr. was found dead Saturday. Officials say his body was retrieved from the river at about 4:45 p.m. Authorities say the drowning appears to be accidental, but remains under investigation. Chua was from Anchorage, Alaska and had been in the Air Force since 2016.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The U.S. Air Force is planning a massive training exercise over the northern plains states. The Bismarck Tribune reports that the maneuvers are set for July 19-23 in the skies over the Powder River Training Complex. The training area is the larges in the continental United States. It covers nearly 35,000 square miles of air space over the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming. Officials at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota say multiple types of aircraft will be involved in the exercises and nonmilitary aircraft should avoid the area.<\/p>\n

WILTON, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Authorities say a pedestrian was killed after being struck by a semi-trailer while walking in the dark on U.S. Highway 83 south of Wilton. The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the incident happened shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday. Thirty-five-year-old Sandra Finley, of Mandaree, was walking in the southbound lane when she was struck by the southbound sem. KFGO radio reports that Finley was transported to a Bismarck hospital and then transferred to a Fargo hospital where she died. The semi driver was not injured.<\/p>\n

Police in Novi, Michigan, said the mortar-style firework tilted slightly and started to fire toward people nearby Sunday night. A police spokesman says the 24-year-old Kivleniek was in a hot tub and tried to get clear with several other people.<\/p>\n
Prior to the autopsy, police said Kivlenieks was believed to have slipped and hit his head on concrete while running from a malfunctioning firework.<\/p>\n
Kivlenieks appeared in two games for the Blue Jackets this season, recording a 3.40 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expects pitcher Trevor Bauer to be out beyond the seven-day administrative leave imposed by Major League Baseball slated to end Friday.<\/p>\n
Bauer was placed on leave last Friday, three days after an allegation of assault was made by a woman against him.<\/p>\n
The leave was imposed under the joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy adopted by MLB and the players\u2019 union in 2015. It can be the initial step leading to a longer suspension.<\/p>\n

Donahue is UCLA\u2019s all-time winningest football coach with 151, including a Pac-12-record 98. He was the first to appear in a Rose Bowl game as a player, assistant coach and head coach.<\/p>\n

An Antonov An-26 plane with 22 passengers and six crew members, flying from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the town of Palana, missed a scheduled communication and disappeared from radar Tuesday as it was on approach for landing. The governor of Kamchatka told the Interfax news agency that the main body of the plane was found on the coast, while other wreckage was found in the sea right near the coast.
