\"\"Bismarck\u00a0 \u2013 Gov. Doug Burgum Wednesday released the following statement in response to the COVID-19 guidance<\/a> released this week by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding fully vaccinated individuals.<\/p>\n

\u201cActive COVID-19 cases today represent just 3% of North Dakota\u2019s peak case numbers last November. Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 remain below 20 patients, and July deaths due to COVID-19 are on track to be the lowest since the pandemic began. Yet our positive case numbers are trending in the wrong direction, even with limited testing occurring,\u201d Burgum said. \u201cThe highly contagious Delta variant<\/a> is driving cases up across the United States, and nearly all COVID-related hospitalizations and deaths are among those not vaccinated. Safe, effective vaccines are available to all North Dakotans ages 12 and up and represent the best defense against COVID-19, including the Delta variant. Individuals with questions about the vaccines, which are now protecting nearly 1.5 billion people worldwide, are encouraged to visit with their own doctor or medical provider.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThe State of North Dakota will not be recommending any changes for state employees in response to the new CDC guidance at this time,\u201d Burgum continued. \u201cNorth Dakota\u2019s statewide COVID-19 emergency ended April 30. Local entities are best suited to consider CDC guidelines based on local conditions, including case rates, positivity rates and available hospital capacity. North Dakota has relied on personal responsibility throughout the pandemic. Residents are encouraged to educate themselves on the differences of the Delta variant, be aware of the level of spread in their area and utilize well-known COVID-19 etiquette and mitigation measures as appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The operator of an oil well pad where a fire has been burning since last week in McKenzie County has brought in a specialized emergency response crew to get a handle on the blaze. The well pad is located on federal land just south of Lake Sakakawea northeast of Watford City. Its operator, Petro-Hunt, is working with Texas-based Wild Well Control. The cause of the fire, which broke out last Thursday, is unknown. Clouds of black smoke are rising from the blaze, causing state environmental officials to encourage nearby residents to monitor their local air quality at www.airnow.gov. Air quality is already poor in parts of North Dakota because of wildfire smoke from the western U.S. and Canada.<\/p>\n

\"\"FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The perennial powerhouse of the Football Championship Subdivision is taking its show to the home of the Minnesota Vikings. North Dakota State is scheduled to play Eastern Washington at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sept. 2, 2023. The downtown Minneapolis stadium seats more than 66,000 fans for football. It will be the second trip to the Twin Cities for the Bison. who are winners of eight of the last 10 FCS titles. They drew 35,544 fans to Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins, when Trey Lance’s dazzling debut wound up in a 57-10 win over Butler. Lance, now a rookie with the San Francisco 49ers, threw for four touchdowns and ran for two scores.<\/p>\n

CORONA, Calif. (AP) \u2014 Police say they have arrested a man in connection with a shooting that killed an 18-year-old woman and seriously wounded a 19-year-old social media influencer as they watched \u201cThe Forever Purge\u201d at a Southern California movie theater. Authorities say there is no known motive for the violence Monday at the showing of the horror movie and the shooting appears to be \u201can unprovoked attack.\u201d The suspect was booked Tuesday night on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and robbery and is being held on $2 million bail. Rylee Goodrich was fatally shot, and Anthony Barajas remained on life support Wednesday. Barajas has nearly a million followers on TikTok and more on other platforms.<\/p>\n

(AP) Governments and businesses are scrambling to change course following new federal guidance calling for the return of mask wearing in virus hot spots amid a dramatic spike in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. Nevada moved swiftly to re-impose an indoor mask mandate following Tuesday\u2019s announcement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Arkansas, legislative leaders are weighing revisiting a recently passed law banning mask mandates. And Ford Motor Co. says it will reinstate face mask protocols at its Missouri and Florida facilities. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said Wednesday that the new guidance was prompted by new data that showed vaccinated people can pass on the virus.<\/p>\n

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) \u2014 New York will require all state employees to get vaccinated against the coronavirus by Labor Day or undergo weekly COVID-19 testing. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the policy Wednesday in a Zoom call with the nonprofit Association for a Better New York. In mandating either the shots, or frequent testing for government workers, the Democrat is following on the heels of California and New York City. New York, like other states, has seen a rising number of coronavirus cases linked to the Delta variant. New infections have climbed more than 400% since the end of June. Cuomo also said vaccines would be mandatory for \u201cfront-line\u201d workers at state-owned hospitals.<\/p>\n

SAN RAMON, Calif. (AP) \u2014 Google is postponing its plans to bring most of its workers back to the office until mid-October and rolling out a policy that will eventually require everyone to be vaccinated once its sprawling campuses are fully reopened in an attempt to fight the spreading Delta variant. CEO Sundar Pichai told Google’s more than 130,000 employees in a Wednesday email that the company is now aiming to bring them back to its offices Oct. 18, instead of its previous target date of Sept. 1. He also disclosed that once offices are fully reopened, everyone working there will have be vaccinated. The requirement will be first imposed in the U.S.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Senate Republicans have reached a deal with Democrats over major outstanding issues in a $1 trillion infrastructure bill. They say they are ready to vote to take up the bill, and an evening test vote is possible. The infrastructure measure is a key part of President Joe Biden’s agenda. The outcome will set the stage for the next debate over Biden\u2019s much more ambitious $3.5 trillion spending package, which includes child care, tax breaks and health care. The Republican senators met Wednesday morning with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who appears to have given his nod to proceed to consider the emerging legislation.<\/p>\n

MACUNGIE, Pa. (AP) \u2014 President Joe Biden has checked out half-built big rigs and chatted up workers at a Mack Truck plant in Pennsylvania. His visit to the facility in the Lehigh Valley comes as his administration pushes new \u201cbuy American\u201d efforts and advocates for government investments and clean energy as ways to strengthen U.S. manufacturing. Biden also is trying to connect with the plant\u2019s 2,500 workers. He’s made manufacturing jobs a priority, and Democrats\u2019 political future next year might hinge on whether he succeeds in reinvigorating a sector that has steadily lost jobs for more than four decades. The Mack plant was silent other than the whir of fans. Work was halted to accommodate Biden\u2019s visit.<\/p>\n
