August 18 \u2013 DeMasi Brothers<\/em><\/p>\n

Joseph and John, the DeMasi Bros., began their folk music career in the folk clubs and coffeehouses in and around New York City where they were born and raised. As part of the 80\u2019s folk music revival scene, they appeared and performed regularly at Greenwich Villages famed music club \u201cthe Speak Easy\u201d and were featured performers on the \u201cFast Folk\u201d music series. They shared the stage with such folk legends as Harry and Tom Chapin, Christine Lavin and Oscar Brand and have appeared regularly on NPR radio.<\/p>\n

This summer they will be celebrating 25 years in existence. Musicians are featured each week showcasing their talents for the community and surrounding area.<\/p>\n

Valley City (From Chamber) With the Streetscape Phase II project,\u00a0 beginning Wednesday August 18, 2021, the eastbound parking lane between Central Avenue and 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0Avenue will be closed for construction operations.<\/p>\n

The roadway will remain open to thru traffic. Parking will be allowed on the north side of Main Street. A portion of the sidewalk on the south side of the road between Central Avenue and 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0Avenue on Main Street will be removed; however, the sidewalk immediately adjacent to the building will remain in place. Pedestrians are to use the temporary crossings and channeling devices to access businesses.<\/p>\n

Construction operations are still ongoing on Central Avenue. Parking is permitted south of 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0Street on Central Avenue.<\/p>\n

Finley\u00a0 (NDHP)\u00a0 The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports that a 35 year old Lisbon man died in a head-on collision in Steele County Wednesday, August 18.<\/p>\n

The crash between his SUV and a semi occurred about 6:30-a.m. on Highway 32, about 12.5 miles south of Finley.<\/p>\n

The report says, a Peterbilt was traveling southbound on Highway 32 near mile marker 104.5 and a Chevy Avalanche was traveling northbound. The Chevy crossed over the center line and struck the Peterbilt head-on. The semi and trailer continued into the west ditch traveling south and the Chevy entered the east ditch, rolling onto its top and catching fire.<\/p>\n

The 35 year-old driver from Lisbon was pronounced dead on the scene by the Steele County corner. Semi driver 54 year old Ernest Matelski, of Hillsboro was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.<\/p>\n

The North Dakota Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Steele County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Hope Ambulance, and Hope Fire Department.<\/p>\n

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The body of a fisherman has been recovered from a lake in Ramsey County. Sheriff Steve Nelson says the man\u2019s body was discovered floating in Devils Lake Tuesday. Nelson says the man from Grand Forks, believed to be in his early 60s, was fishing from shore and somehow ended up in the water. An autopsy will be done. The man\u2019s name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Gov. Doug Burgum\u2019s office attorney is retiring. Leslie Bakken Oliver has served as general counsel for the governor\u2019s office since Burgum took office in December 2016. Oliver\u2019s retirement is pending the transition to her successor. Oliver says she looks forward to more time with family. She called her position \u201crewarding, meaningful and thoroughly enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 State officials say there are no current plans to bring any of the people fleeing the conflict in Afghanistan to North Dakota. The North Dakota Department of Human Services says there is no resettlement plan and that the process is actually quite extensive. The state\u2019s refugee coordinator says the people being transported to the U.S. are classified as Special Immigrant Visa Holders. Each person will be resettled in an area of the country that Afghans have already settled in. Officials say it takes eight different government agencies and six background checks for a person to gain clearance for the Refugee Resettlement Program in North Dakota.<\/p>\n

\"\"MINNEAPOLIS (AP) \u2014 Jorge Polanco drove in the game-ending run for the third time in four games, lining a bases-loaded single in the 11th inning to give the Minnesota Twins an 8-7 win over the Cleveland Indians. The Twins survived after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth and nearly won it in the 10th. Danny\u00a0Colome Minnesota\u2019s eighth pitcher, got the win. Justin Garza took the loss for Cleveland. Polanco ended Monday\u2019s game against Cleveland with an RBI double in the 10th. A day earlier, his walk-off sacrifice fly gave the Twins a win over Tampa Bay.<\/p>\n

\"\"DETROIT (AP) \u2014 Detroit Tigers broadcaster Jack Morris has been suspended indefinitely for racist comments made about Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani during Tuesday\u2019s game. When asked by play-by-play announcer Matt Shepard how the Tigers should pitch to Ohtani in the sixth inning, Morris adopted an exaggerated East Asian accent while saying \u201cbe very, very careful.\u201d When Ohtani came back up in the ninth, Morris issued a lengthy apology. Bally Sports Detroit announced the suspension Wednesday and said the 66-year-old Morris would undergo bias training.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The Pentagon says U.S. military officers in Kabul are talking to Taliban commanders about making it easier for Afghans and Americans to enter the airport for evacuation flights. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby says the discussion centers on Taliban curfews and checkpoints that have limited the number of people who are able to reach U.S.-run evacuation processing points inside the airport. The White House said on Tuesday that the Taliban have agreed to allow safe passage for civilians trying to leave Afghanistan, but the flow of evacuees has been constrained by Taliban obstacles. Kirby said there are now about 4,500 U.S. troops at the airport, with several hundred more expected to arrive by Thursday.<\/p>\n

(AP) The names, Social Security numbers and information from driver\u2019s licenses or other identification of just over 40 million people who applied for T-Mobile credit were exposed in a recent data breach, the company said Wednesday. The same data for about 7.8 million current T-Mobile customers who pay for phone service in monthly bills also appears to be compromised. No phone numbers, account numbers, PINs, passwords or financial information from the nearly 50 million records and accounts were compromised, it said. It\u2019s just the latest data breach to hit T-Mobile in recent years but experts say the sheer numbers far exceed the previous breaches.<\/p>\n

(AP)\u00a0 U.S. Census Bureau computer servers uninvolved with the 2020 census were exploited last year during a cybersecurity attack. A watchdog report released Wednesday says the hackers\u2019 attempts to keep access to the system were unsuccessful. The attack took place in January 2020 on the bureau\u2019s remote access servers. According to the Office of Inspector General, the Census Bureau missed opportunities to limit its vulnerability to the attack and didn\u2019t discover and report the attack in a timely manner. In a written response, acting Census Bureau director Ron Jarmin reiterated that none of the systems used for the 2020 census were compromised.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 U.S. health officials have announced plans to dispense COVID-19 booster shots to all Americans to shore up their protection amid the surging delta variant and evidence that the vaccines\u2019 effectiveness is falling. The plan, as outlined by the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other top health authorities, calls for booster doses eight months after people get their second shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. The booster doses could begin the week of Sept. 20.<\/p>\n

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) \u2014 Students in Florida\u2019s Broward County went back to school under a mask mandate Wednesday, even as their school board faces threats of penalties for defying Gov. Ron DeSantis, who says parents should decide whether their children wear masks. School officials in Tampa and Miami plan to address the public health measure later Wednesday. And in Gainesville, the Alachua County board extended its mask mandate for another two months Tuesday night, hoping to reduce infections in classrooms. All this after the Florida Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to consider taking away funding and removing school board members who defy the governor’s order.<\/p>\n

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) \u2014 Walt Disney World is tweaking its face mask policy. Starting Thursday, the theme park resort in Florida will allow visitors to chose whether or not to wear face coverings in outdoor lines, outdoor theaters and outdoor attractions. They previously had been required. Face coverings will remain optional in outdoor common areas. They will still be required for visitors age 2 and up at all indoor locations, such as restaurants, theaters and transportation with the exception of ferry boats<\/p>\n
