The report says total wages and salaries are expected to hold steady with a slight decline in the third quarter of this year. Detroit starter Casey Mize gave up three runs on five hits — including Donaldson’s homer, his 21st of the season.

Bismarck – The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) has announced its final edition of the Football Players-of-the-Week honors Monday. Jordan Cooper of Waldorf (Iowa) was named to the Offensive Player-of-the-Week. Jerrod Williamson of Valley City State (N.D.) was selected as the Defensive Player-of-the-Week, while his teammate Nico Magana was named to the Special Teams Player-of-the-Week.

NSAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Jerrod Williamson – Valley City State (N.D.) – 5’9″ – 180 lbs., Senior – defensive back – Upper Marlboro, Md. – Williamson broke up three passes and caught an interception in (RV) Valley City State (N.D.) 24-7 home victory over arch-rival Jamestown (N.D.). His fourth quarter interception set up a 25-yard touchdown pass that put the game out of reach at 24-0. Williamson also had five tackles in the game.

NSAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Nico Magana – Valley City State (N.D.) – 5’7″ – 255 lbs., Freshman – kicker – Chula Vista, Calif. – Magana converted a field goal and made all three PAT extra-point kicks in propelling (RV) Valley City State (N.D.) to a 24-7 season home opener over arch-rival Jamestown (N.D.). He averaged 55 yards per kick-off attempt, where the Jimmies’ average field position after those five kick-offs was their own 25-yard line. Magana hit a 20-yard field goal in the Vikings.

NSAA Football Standings

School

Overall
Record

NSAA
Record

Games
Behind

Streak

Dakota State (S.D.)

1-0

0-0

—-

Won 1

(RV) Valley City State (N.D.)

1-0

0-0

—-

Won 1

Waldorf (Iowa)

1-0

0-0

—-

Won 1

(11) Dickinson State (N.D.)

0-0

0-0

—-

—–

Mayville State (N.D.)

0-1

0-0

—-

Lost 1

Iowa Wesleyan

0-1

0-0

—-

Lost 1

Presentation (S.D.)

0-1

0-0

—-

Lost 1

In world and national news…

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Taliban fighters watched the last U.S. planes disappear into the night sky and then fired their guns into the air. They were celebrating victory after 20-year insurgency that drove the world’s most powerful military out of one of the poorest countries. The U.S. departure marked the end of a massive airlift in which tens of thousands of people fled Afghanistan, fearful of the return of Taliban rule after the militants took over most of the country and rolled into the capital earlier this month. U.S. Gen. Frank McKenzie announced the completion of America’s longest war, saying the last planes took off from Kabul one minute before midnight Monday in Kabul.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A fearsome Hurricane Ida has left scores of coastal Louisiana residents trapped by floodwaters and pleading to be rescued, while making a shambles of the electrical grid across a wide swath of the state in the sweltering, late-summer heat. One of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the U.S. mainland has now weakened into a tropical storm as it pushes inland over Mississippi with torrential rain and shrieking winds. Two people have died. No major flooding was reported inside the flood control system that protect New Orleans. But a million people were without power and officials warned it could be weeks before the grid is fixed.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A fearsome Hurricane Ida has left scores of coastal Louisiana residents trapped by floodwaters and pleading to be rescued, while making a shambles of the electrical grid across a wide swath of the state in the sweltering, late-summer heat. But a million people were without power and officials warned it could be weeks before the grid is fixed.

(AP) New Orleans police say they have received numerous reports of stealing from stores and other businesses, and made several arrests in the wake of Hurricane Ida. “This will not be tolerated,” Police Chief Shaun Ferguson said at a Monday briefing. He specifically described what was occurring as looting, saying, “This is a state felony, and we will be booking you accordingly.” New Orleans police are working with the Louisiana National Guard to prevent thefts. Police are working 12-hour shifts, and it’s “all hands on deck,” Ferguson said.

(AP) The Education Department says it’s investigating five Republican-led states that have banned mask requirements in schools, saying the policies could amount to discrimination against students with disabilities or health conditions. The department’s office for civil rights sent letters to education chiefs in Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah. Those states have barred schools from requiring masks among students and staff, a move that the department says could prevent some students from safely attending school. It marks a sharp escalation in the Biden administration’s battle with Republican states that say wearing masks should be a personal choice.

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union has recommended that its 27 nations reinstate restrictions on tourists from the U.S. because of rising coronavirus infections there. The decision by the European Council to remove the U.S. from a safe list of countries for nonessential travel reverses its advice in June, when the bloc recommended lifting restrictions on U.S. travelers before the summer tourism season. The guidance is nonbinding, though, and U.S. travelers should expect a mishmash of travel rules across the continent. National EU governments have the authority to decide whether they keep their borders open to U.S. tourists. Coronavirus deaths have surged in the U.S. recently, rising to over 1,200 a day, and new daily cases are over 150,000 a day.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. war in Afghanistan is in its final hours as the military flew more desperate evacuees out of the Afghan capital. The Islamic State group’s Afghanistan affiliate is claiming responsibility for targeting the Kabul airport with rockets, but the U.S. military reports no American casualties. Biden administration officials say the U.S. has the capacity to evacuate the approximately 300 U.S. citizens remaining in Afghanistan who want to leave before President Joe Biden’s Tuesday deadline. The steady stream of U.S. military jets taking off and landing at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul continued Monday even after rocket fire apparently targeted the airport but hit a nearby neighborhood.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says a momentary power surge disrupted half of the New York City subway system for several hours. Hochul says the breakdown stranded passengers on five trains that were between stations when signalization went down Sunday night. She says the unprecedented breakdown affected more than 80 trains on the subway system’s numbered lines plus the L train from shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday to about 1:30 a.m. Monday. Hochul says service is back to normal for Monday’s commute. She says there will be an investigation into the subway disruption.

The Pentagon says it remains prepared to airlift more Americans from the Kabul airport, even as the evacuation winds down. Pentagon press secretary John Kirby told reporters Monday “there is still time” for remaining Americans to get out. He would not be more specific about the state of the evacuation. He said a total of 5,400 Americans have been airlifted thus far. President Joe Biden has set Tuesday as a deadline for completing the evacuation.

CSi Weather… .TONIGHT…Mostly cloudy with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms in the evening, then partly cloudy after midnight.
