\"\"Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 Jamestown will be celebrating Arbor Day this year on Friday October 1.<\/p>\n

City Forester Erik Laber is encouraging the community to plant trees, and help out at a tree planting event, starting at 9-a.m., at the city water plant location, and with the help of volunteers plant six trees there.<\/p>\n

In a news release, Erik says, \u201cShovels will be provided, but if people so choose to bring a shovel or rake that will ensure there is enough to go around.\u201d<\/p>\n

He says, Jamestown Mayor Dwaine Heinrich is preparing an Arbor Day Proclamation.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Police say they\u2019ve made an arrest in connection with a fire at an apartment complex in Bismarck. Firefighters responded to a fire at the three-story apartment building about 5 a.m. Thursday. As tenants were being evacuated, the 33-year-old man who was later arrested was found on his balcony. As the fire was investigated, police say it was determined the man was allegedly boiling cooking oil. He told investigators he planned throw the oil on gang members who were trying to enter his apartment. The man is being held in the Burleigh Morton Detention Center on a probable charge of endangerment by fire.<\/p>\n

      WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Congress took a big step toward avoiding a partial federal shutdown on Thursday when the Senate passed a bill to keep the government funded through Dec. 3. The House is expected to soon follow suit. The votes will help avert one crisis, but efforts to stave off a second crisis seem likely to continue for the next couple of weeks as the two parties dig in on a dispute over how to raise the government\u2019s borrowing cap. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says that if the debt limit isn\u2019t raised by Oct. 18, the United State probably will face a financial crisis and economic recession.<\/p>\n

      WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Thursday that current high levels of inflation are likely to fade next year and won\u2019t prevent the Fed from pushing toward its goal of full employment. In comments before the House Financial Services Committee, Powell said he believes inflation will decline without the Fed having to raise rates, which would potentially slow hiring.<\/p>\n

      NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Brace for a rude surprise on your winter heating bills. After years of unusually inexpensive levels, the price of natural gas in the United States has more than doubled since this time last year. In Europe and Asia, wholesale prices are more than five times what they were a year ago. The surging costs have coincided with a robust recovery from the pandemic recession, with more homes and businesses burning all forms of fuel. That intensified demand is poised to contribute to higher heating costs in many areas of the world.<\/p>\n

      WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The number of military suicides jumped by 15% in 2020, fueled by significant increases in the Army and Marine Corps that senior leaders said were troubling and require more effort to prevent. Data released by the Pentagon showed there were 580 suicides last year, compared to 504 the prior year. Of those, the number of suicides by Army National Guard troops jumped by about 35%, from 76 in 2019, to 103 last year, and the active duty Army saw a nearly 20% rise. Military and defense leaders expressed concern about the numbers.<\/p>\n

      WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Government researchers reported a big drop in teen vaping this year as many U.S. students stayed home from school during the pandemic. Survey results released Thursday give the first indication of how COVID-19 disruptions may have slowed the underage use of electronic cigarettes. Government officials urged caution in comparing the latest survey numbers to prior years, because of differences in how the results were gathered. But outside researchers said the drop is likely real and makes sense given that young people often vape socially. In the survey 11% percent of high school students said they regularly vape, down from nearly 20% last year.<\/p>\n
