(AP) — Gov. Doug Burgum said the way to address methane emissions is through innovation, not further regulation which he says will only drive energy production overseas. Burgum and other Republicans in North Dakota have denounced Democratic President Joe Biden’s methane reduction plan which he announced at the United Nations climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland this week. In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency would target reductions from existing oil and gas wells nationwide, rather than focus only on new wells as previous regulations have done. Burgum says the Biden administration should be allowing industry to reinvest in existing and future infrastructure to protect the environment and human health while also reducing regulatory costs.

In world and national news

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve will begin dialing back the extraordinary economic aid it’s provided since the pandemic erupted last year, a response to high inflation that now looks likely to persist longer than it did just a few months ago. In a statement after its latest policy meeting, the Fed said it will start reducing its $120 billion in monthly bond purchases in the coming weeks, by $15 billion a month, though it reserved the right to change that pace. Those purchases have been intended to hold down long-term interest rates to encourage borrowing and spending. With the economy recovering, that’s no longer needed.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey is still in a close race for reelection while a Republican political newcomer has delivered a stunning upset in the Virginia governor’s race. Those results are sending a warning on Wednesday to Democrats that their grip on power in Washington may be in peril. In Virginia, Glenn Youngkin became the first Republican to win statewide office in a dozen years, tapping into culture war fights over schools and race to unite former President Donald Trump’s most fervent supporters with enough suburban voters to notch a victory. President Joe Biden won Virginia by a comfortable 10 percentage points last year and New Jersey by 15.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats have differing explanations about why their gubernatorial candidates lost in blue-leaning Virginia and were deadlocked in heavily Democratic New Jersey. But they’re trying to figure out why the political terrain shifted against them and what it means for their congressional agenda. Party leaders in Congress moved toward strengthening the appeal of their long-stalled 10-year, $1.75 trillion economic package by adding popular family leave provisions. The election results were ominous for Democrats because they’re still trying to move their long delayed economic bills through Congress. And it’s just a year until midterm elections that are notoriously tough on the party that holds the White House.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has tested positive for COVID-19 in Scotland. The mayor’s office says Garcetti’s positive test happened Wednesday in Glasgow. He is fully vaccinated and had traveled to Scotland for the U.N. climate conference. His office tweeted that he is feeling good and is isolating in his hotel room. The tweet did not specify the location of the hotel, but Garcetti spokesman Alex Comisar confirmed that the mayor is in Glasgow. Garcetti’s office did not immediately disclose any additional information.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Air Force says nearly 8,500 active duty members of the Air Force and Space Force have missed the deadline for getting COVID-19 vaccinations, including 800 who flatly refused and nearly 5,000 with pending requests for a religious exemption. The Air Force said 95.9 percent of all airmen and Space Force guardians are fully vaccinated and 96.9 percent have gotten at least one shot. Tuesday was the Air Force deadline for all active duty members to receive vaccinations. The Air Force deadline was the first of all the military services, providing a first look at how America’s military will handle the mandate.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says China is expanding its nuclear force much faster than U.S. officials predicted just a year ago. In a report to Congress, the Pentagon says this highlights a broad and accelerating expansion of military power designed to enable Beijing to match or surpass American global influence and power by mid-century. The report says the number of Chinese nuclear warheads could increase to 700 within six years and may top 1,000 by 2030. The report did not say how many weapons China has today; a year ago the Pentagon said the figure was in the “low 200s.”

CSi Weather… TONIGHT…Mostly clear.
