(AP) — The attorneys general of 11 states have filed a lawsuit challenging a vaccine mandate for employers issued by President Joe Biden’s administration. The suit filed in the St. Louis-based 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals contends that authority to compel vaccinations rests with the states, not the federal government. The new mandate applies to private employers with at least 100 workers. Missouri’s GOP Attorney General Eric Schmitt says in a court filing the mandate is “unconstitutional, unlawful, and unwise.” Other suing include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

In sports…

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Hunters and landowners in North Dakota had a new tool at their disposal during the opening day of deer gun season. An electronic land posting map meant to keep people from hunting without permission is getting its first use in the field this fall. The law allows only lawful hunters and anglers to access fenced, unposted land for hunting and fishing activities only. The governor’s office sys North Dakota is the first state to make electronic posting available for private land, The Bismarck Tribune reports that 72,200 licenses made available this year, the sixth straight year of an increase and the most licenses in 10 years. The 16½-day deer gun season opened at noon Friday.

In world and national news…

(AP) The United States is steadily chipping away at vaccine hesitancy and driving down COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations to the point that schools, governments and corporations are lifting mask restrictions yet again. Nearly 200 million Americans are fully vaccinated. Nearly 98% of the over-65 population has received at least one COVID-19 shot and more than 25% of them have gotten boosters. The improving metrics could get a boost from President Joe Biden’s workplace mandate and the launch of COVID-19 shots in elementary school students. But some experts warn the virus isn’t going away and it could spread more easily with people indoors this winter.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The attorneys general of 26 states have filed federal lawsuits challenging a vaccine mandate for employers issued by the Biden administration. They generally contend that the authority to compel vaccinations rests with the states, not the federal government. The new mandate applies to private employers with at least 100 workers. The Biden administration says it is confident its requirement will withstand the challenges, but legal experts are divided over which side is likely to prevail. Several businesses also joined the lawsuits filed Friday, saying they don’t want to insert themselves into their employees’ health care decisions.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic leaders are trying to resolve lingering concerns by moderates in hopes of finally pushing President Joe Biden’s multitrillion-dollar domestic agenda through the House. Leaders have met privately with centrists who want an official cost estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office before voting on a $1.85 trillion social and environment bill. Democrats can lose no more than three votes in the narrowly divided House to pass the legislation. Leaders say complete CBO figures won’t be ready for days or more. Democrats want to pass that legislation and a separate $1 trillion infrastructure measure after faring poorly in this week’s off-year elections.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A former Justice Department official who aligned himself with Donald Trump after he lost the 2020 election has declined to be fully interviewed about the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Jeffrey Clark ended a deposition with a House committee investigating the attack after around 90 minutes on Friday. Clark told the committee he would not answer questions based on Trump’s assertion of executive privilege in an ongoing court case. That’s according to a person familiar with the closed-door meeting who was granted anonymity to discuss it. The House panel has struggled to gain cooperation from some of Trump’s other top allies.

TRENTON, N.J.
