VCSU finishes the year with an 8-2 overall record and a 6-2 record in the NSAA.

Valley City\u00a0\u00a0 (VCSU<\/a>) The Valley City State football team and its nine seniors ended the 2021 season with an impressive victory Saturday, defeating Dakota State University 33-7 on VCSU Senior Day.<\/p>\n

The Vikings led 14-7 at halftime and then broke the game wide open with 19 fourth-quarter points en route to their eighth victory of the season. It is the most wins by a VCSU football team since the 2014 season and gives the Vikings a bit of redemption after an Oct. 16 loss at Dakota State earlier this season.<\/p>\n

Valley City State intercepted two passes on Saturday, including an interception that Jerrod Williamson<\/a> returned for a touchdown and the eighth interception of the season by sophomore linebacker Jahidi West<\/a>. The interception by West tied VCSU’s single-season school record.<\/p>\n

Valley City State ends the season with an 8-2 overall record and a 6-2 mark in conference play. The Vikings will finish second in the NSAA standings. Dakota State drops to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Trojans have one game remaining.<\/p>\n

Men’s Basketball<\/p>\n

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.\u00a0\u00a0 (VCSU<\/a>)\u00a0 \u2013 Jalen Addison made the game-winning jumper with 0.4 seconds remaining in overtime Saturday night as the Valley City State men’s basketball team scored an 88-86 victory over Dakota Wesleyan University.<\/p>\n

Tied at 86-86 with 4.9 seconds remaining, Addison took an inbounds pass and dribbled down the floor to the left corner before pulling up for a 15-footer to win the game. Addison finished with a team-high 22 points Saturday night, knocking down three 3-pointers and coming up with three steals during the game at the NAIA Basketball Classic in Sioux Falls.<\/p>\n

Valley City State improves to 2-2 overall this season. Dakota Wesleyan drops to 2-1, suffering their first loss of the season.<\/p>\n

The Vikings trailed by as many as 13 points early in the second half before chipping away at the deficit. Chris Thompson<\/a>‘s old-fashioned 3-point play with 2:34 remaining finally tied the game at 70-70. Dakota Wesleyan went up 72-70 in the final minute, but VCSU’s Tate Hebrink<\/a> scored a basket with 12 seconds remaining to tie the game again and eventually force overtime.<\/p>\n

Valley City State opened up an 83-76 lead in overtime before Dakota Wesleyan came storming back and eventually tied the game at 86-86 on a basket by Jeffrey Schuch. That set up Addison’s heroics, which delivered VCSU’s second straight victory over Dakota Wesleyan.<\/p>\n

Addison led the Vikings with 22 points, while Kevin Schramm<\/a> shot 6-for-9 and finished with 16 points. Chris Thompson<\/a> scored 10 points and had six rebounds. Connor Entzi<\/a>, Eddie Oyet<\/a>, Tate Hebrink<\/a> and Uhana Ochan<\/a> each scored seven points for VCSU.<\/p>\n

The Vikings shot 48 percent overall (30-63), 44 percent on 3’s (8-18) and 71 percent at the line (20-28). Dakota Wesleyan shot 58 percent from the field (32-55), 46 percent on 3’s (5-11) and 61 percent on free throws (17-28).<\/p>\n

Ace Zorr led Dakota Wesleyan with 25 points, and Koln Oppold had a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.<\/p>\n

VCSU forced 18 turnovers while turning it over just 12 times. Dakota Wesleyan pulled down 34 rebounds while the Vikings had 33 rebounds \u2013 including nine offensive boards.<\/p>\n

Dakota Wesleyan 67\u00a0 VCSU 51<\/p>\n

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.\u00a0\u00a0 (VCSU<\/a>)\u2013 The Valley City State women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, falling 67-51 to Dakota Wesleyan at the NAIA Basketball Classic.<\/p>\n

Dakota Wesleyan opened with eight straight points in Saturday’s game and built a 20-10 advantage after the first ten minutes of play. \u00a0The Vikings couldn’t find a run as the Tigers expended its lead to 37-23 at the half.<\/p>\n

The Tigers opened the second half with a 10-point run to lead 47-23. Back-to-back 3’s from VCSU’s Adriana Torres<\/a> helped close the gap\u00a0as the Vikings\u00a0trailed 51-32 with under a minute left in the third quarter. Valley City State finished the game on a nine-point run but time ran out as Dakota Wesleyan finished with a 67-51 victory Saturday.<\/p>\n

Dakota Wesleyan improves to 2-0 on the season and Valley City State falls to 1-1 overall.<\/p>\n

Valley City State shot 31 percent from the field (19-61), 33 percent from 3-point range (7-21) and 50 percent on free throws (6-12). Dakota Wesleyan shot 39 percent from the field (27-69), just 8 percent on 3’s (1-12) and 80 percent from the free throw line (12-15). Dakota Wesleyan outrebounded the Vikings 50-36, including 15 on the offensive glass.<\/p>\n

Adriana Torres<\/a> paced the Vikings\u00a0with 14 points \u2013 including three 3-pointers Saturday.\u00a0Torres added\u00a0nine rebounds while Hailey Roberts<\/a> finished with eight points and a pair of assists. Allie Negen<\/a> totaled eight points and three rebounds off the Viking bench. Taryn Dieterle<\/a> added a team-best three steals Saturday.<\/p>\n

Dakota Wesleyan’s Jada Campbell posted a game-high 18 points Saturday and added six rebounds, four blocks and a steal. Matti Reiner totaled 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks while Kaylee Kirk contributed eight points and three steals for the Tigers.<\/p>\n

Volleyball<\/p>\n

ABERDEEN, S.D. (VCSU<\/a>) \u00a0 \u2013 The Valley City State volleyball team dropped a five-set effort to Presentation College in the regular season finale Saturday, 12-25, 25-22, 25-22, 27-29 and 15-11.<\/p>\n

Valley City State finishes the regular season with a 13-17 overall record and an 8-6 NSAA record. VCSU will be the No. 4 seed in the postseason after Saturday’s loss. The Saints finish the regular season with a 15-13 overall record and a 5-9 record in the conference. Presentation clinched a spot in the postseason with Saturday’s victory.\u00a0The NSAA Tournament will be played Nov. 12-13 in Watertown, S.D.<\/p>\n

Valley City State handily took the first set Saturday, forcing six Presentation errors early. VCSU took a 7-1 run to pull away and locked in the 25-12 victory on a Sadie Hansen<\/a> kill.<\/p>\n

Presentation then started to heat up and took the next two sets, both 25-22. The Vikings would not\u00a0give up in the fourth set and\u00a0held off the Saints on two set point opportunities with kills from Bailey Nelson<\/a> and Makayla Wetzel<\/a>. A Brooke Blessum<\/a> kill set the Vikings up for a set point and a Presentation error gave VCSU the 29-27 victory to stay alive.<\/p>\n

In the fifth set, Valley City State held an 8-8 tie with the Saints but couldn’t hold on as Presentation finished with a 7-3 run to take the match.<\/p>\n

Valley City State’s Katie Juarez<\/a> and Sadie Hansen<\/a> each posted a double-double in Saturday’s effort. Juarez tallied a team-high 29 digs and 10 kills while Hansen added 40 set assists and 21 digs in the match.<\/p>\n

Kallene Klever<\/a> added 21 digs for the Vikings and Bailey Nelson<\/a> tallied a team-high 19 kills. Ella Roaldson<\/a> chipped in a pair of solo blocks Saturday.<\/p>\n

Presentation’s Kerstin Knopik finished with 10 kills and four solo blocks to lead the Saints. Laura Babcock totaled a game-high 42 digs and Cassidy Keller added 13 digs. Olivia Corey tallied 24 set assists and 12 digs for Presentation.<\/p>\n

UP NEXT:<\/strong> VCSU competes as a No. 4 seed in\u00a0the NSAA Tournament. The two-day tournament is\u00a0scheduled for Nov. 12-13 in Watertown, S.D.<\/p>\n

Women’s Basketball<\/p>\n

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.\u00a0 (VCSU<\/a>)\u2013 The Valley City State women’s basketball team had three Vikings score in double figures Sunday as VCSU picked up a 75-64 victory over Mount Marty at the NAIA Basketball Classic.<\/p>\n

Adriana Torres<\/a> scored 17 points in Sunday’s win while Hailey Roberts<\/a> put up 16 points and Emma Nielsen<\/a> posted 15 points. Torres, Roberts and Nielsen each made three 3-pointers to combine for nine of VCSU’s 10 3-pointers in the game.<\/p>\n

Roberts added five assists, two blocks and two steals to her stat line Sunday while Torres grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Taryn Dieterle<\/a> contributed nine points and six rebounds, including four offensive boards for VCSU.<\/p>\n

Valley City State improves to 2-1 overall this season. Mount Marty drops to 0-3 on the season.<\/p>\n

After a back-and-forth first quarter that gave the Vikings a 16-15 advantage, Valley City State started to pull away with a 9-0 run over five minutes in the second quarter. After the five-minute scoring drought for the Lancers, Aubrey Twedt hit a 3-pointer to trail 27-22. The Vikings hit two more 3’s before the break \u2013 including a Hailey Roberts<\/a> 3 at the buzzer \u2013 to hold a 37-25 advantage heading into the locker room.<\/p>\n

The Vikings kept their momentum coming out of the locker room and held the\u00a0largest lead of the game at 51-27 on a bucket from Torres with 5:34 on the clock in the third quarter. The Lancers hit four 3’s in the fourth quarter to inch closer but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings held on for a 75-64 victory Sunday.<\/p>\n

Valley City State shot 41 percent from the field (22-54), 42 percent on 3-pointers (10-24) and 70 percent from the free throw line (21-30). Mount Marty shot 38 percent from the field (22-58), 39 percent on 3’s (10-26) and 63 percent on free throws (10-16).<\/p>\n

The Vikings also held the rebounding advantage Sunday, 41-34. Mount Marty totaled 26 fouls in Sunday’s game to VCSU’s 17.<\/p>\n
