FOREST CITY, IOWA\u00a0\u00a0 (VCSU<\/a>)\u00a0 \u2013 Valley City State’s defense forced Iowa Wesleyan into 23 turnovers Saturday afternoon, and the VCSU bench scored 61 points as the Viking men’s basketball team completed its weekend in Iowa with a 91-76 victory.<\/p>\n

Duoth Gach<\/a> made five 3’s and poured in a game-high 21 points to lead VCSU’s offense, and the Vikings scored 26 points off Iowa Wesleyan’s 23 turnovers.<\/p>\n

Valley City State improves its record to 6-3 overall and completes a 2-0 weekend at the Cobblestone Inn and Suites Classic hosted by Waldorf University.<\/p>\n

The Vikings trailed 42-34 late in the first half Saturday, but closed the half with a 10-3 run over the final 95 seconds, cutting the deficit to 45-44 at the break. The teams traded leads throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half before VCSU’s Tate Hebrink<\/a> scored 10 straight points, turning a 56-54 deficit into a 64-56 lead with 9:02 remaining. Iowa Wesleyan would get no closer than six points the rest of the way, and the Vikings pulled away over the final five minutes.<\/p>\n

Gach’s 21 points led four different Vikings in double figures, and six Vikings scored at least nine points in another game with a balanced offensive attack. Gach went 5-for-9 from 3-point range as the Vikings shot 11-for-24 from the arc. Eddie Oyet<\/a> scored 15 points, and Hebrink finished with 13 points and three assists. Chris Thompson<\/a> had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists, and Joshua Kelly<\/a> totaled nine points and four assists. Uhana Ochan<\/a> also scored nine points and pulled down seven rebounds, and Jalen Addison<\/a> had a team-high seven rebounds and five points.<\/p>\n

Of VCSU’s 91 points, 61 came from players off the bench.<\/p>\n

Valley City State shot 43 percent overall (29-67), 46 percent on 3’s (11-24) and 67 percent on free throws (22-33). Iowa Wesleyan shot 46 percent from the field (28-61), 44 percent on 3’s (15-34) and 46 percent at the free throw line (5-11).<\/p>\n

The Vikings have now won three games in a row.<\/p>\n

MAYVILLE\u00a0 (VCSU<\/a>) \u2013 The Valley City State women’s basketball team led most of the way Saturday but ultimately fell to Presentation College 54-50 after a fourth quarter comeback by the Saints.<\/p>\n

The Vikings led by as much as 13 points after an 8-0 Viking run with 1:10 left in the third quarter but the Saints outscored the Vikings 17-5 in the final 10 minutes to complete the comeback effort. The Vikings held a 50-50 tie with 2:05 to go but late free throws sealed the win for Presentation at the Dakota Clash Classic hosted by Mayville State.<\/p>\n

Valley City State drops to 2-5 overall this season\u00a0while Presentation improves to a 2-6 record. The Vikings will face Trinity Bible College on Tuesday night at home. The doubleheader opens with the women’s game at 5 p.m. and men to follow at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n

Ashlyn Diemert<\/a> led VCSU’s scoring effort with 11 points off the Viking bench Saturday. Hailey Roberts<\/a> added 10 points, four assists, four rebounds and two steals. Adriana Torres<\/a> finished with a team-high seven rebounds, four points and two assists, and Taryn Dieterle<\/a> added six rebounds and five points for the Vikings. Allie Critchley<\/a> dished out a team-best four assists Saturday.<\/p>\n

Valley City State shot 26 percent from the field (16-62), 25 percent on 3-pointers (7-28) and 79 percent on free throws (11-14). Presentation shot 39 percent from the field (21-54), 17 percent on 3’s (2-12) and 71 percent from the charity stripe (10-14).<\/p>\n

The Vikings posted 23 bench points and held the rebounding advantage 42-34 Saturday. The Saints scored 15 points off 20 Viking turnovers and totaled five blocks as a team.<\/p>\n

Presentation’s Al Morones scored 12 points to lead the Saints Saturday. Emma Ogitchida and Brittiney Seymour each chipped in 10 points while Seymour added five rebounds, three blocks and three assists.<\/p>\n
