\"\"Valley City\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 The Valley City Fire Department responded to a call on Tuesday, about 2:20-p.m., as smoke was reported coming from a fifth floosr \u00a0apartment unit at the Landmark II building in Valley City.<\/p>\n

Fire Chief Scott Magnuson said cooking material on a stove began to roll smoke from the unit and into the hallway.<\/p>\n

A window was opened to ventilate smoke from building. No injuries were reported.<\/p>\n

Bismarck\u00a0 (NDDoH) \u00a0 \u2013 On Monday, Nov. 29, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strengthened its recommendation for individuals 18 years and older to receive a COVID-19 booster shot due to the recent emergence of the COVID-19 B.1.1.529 variant known as Omicron.<\/p>\n

The World Health Organization (WHO) classified Omicron as a Variant of Concern on Friday, Nov. 26. Early data from South Africa suggest the Omicron variant has an increased transmissibility. Scientists around the world are working urgently to learn more about the variant, including its transmission and vaccine effectiveness against it.<\/p>\n

COVID-19 booster shots are recommended six months after an adult completes their initial Pfizer or Moderna vaccine series, or two months after their dose of the Johnson & Johnson\/Janssen vaccine.<\/p>\n

State Health Officer, Dr. Nizar Wehbi, says \u201cMore than 60% of North Dakotan adults have started their COVID-19 vaccine series. I strongly encourage those who have not yet been vaccinated to get vaccinated as soon as possible.\u00a0 I also encourage everyone to stay home if they are sick and to seek out COVID-19 testing. Vaccination and testing are important tools for North Dakotans to protect themselves and their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyone is encouraged to be proactive in taking actions to protect against COVID-19. Protective strategies such as vaccination, masking indoors in public spaces, maintaining social distance from others, avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces, testing to prevent spread to others, washing hands often, covering coughs and sneezes, cleaning and disinfecting and monitoring health daily. Children ages five and up remain eligible to receive their initial Pfizer vaccine series.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The head of North Dakota\u2019s sole abortion clinic says the stakes have never been higher in the debate over a woman\u2019s right to an abortion. Red River Valley Women\u2019s Clinic Director Tammi Kromenaker is heading from Fargo to Washington, D.C., to join a group of abortion supporters outside the Supreme Court Wednesday. That’s when justices are scheduled to hear testimony on a Mississippi case that many believe could decide the fate of Roe v. Wade. Kromenaker calls the case a \u201cgrave threat to abortion.\u201d North Dakota Republican state Sen. Janne Myrdal, who heads the anti-abortion legislative caucus, calls it \u201cthe strongest opportunity to see Roe turned back to the states.”<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A student accused of bringing a loaded handgun to a Fargo elementary school has been suspended pending further investigation by district administrators and police. School administrators say the student told classmates about the weapon at Lincoln Elementary School Monday and the classmates notified a teacher who located the gun and secured it before turning it over to police. The school was locked down for a time. Authorities say the student did not make any threats. The student was escorted to the school office and the child\u2019s parents were contacted.<\/p>\n

DENT, Minn. (AP) \u2014 Authorities say a 40-year-old northwestern Minnesota man was found dead in the air duct of his house. The Otter Tail County Sheriff\u2019s Office says it received a call from a family member who went to check on the man Monday morning at his residence in rural Dent. KVRR-TV reports that the family hadn\u2019t heard from him in several days. The sheriff\u2019s office says the death appears accidental but it remains under investigation. No further information has been released. Dent is located about 65 miles southeast of the Moorhead and Fargo, North Dakota metropolitan area.<\/p>\n

SIOUX CITY, Iowa\u00a0 (UJ<\/a>) —\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Top-ranked University of Jamestown won its opening pool play match Tuesday at the NAIA Women’s Volleyball Championship at the Tyson Events Center, sweeping Texas Wesleyan University 26-24, 25-19, 25-19.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, now 33-0 this season, wraps up pool play with a Wednesday match against No. 20 Indiana Wesleyan at 10:30 a.m.<\/p>\n

It was a quick start for the Jimmies as they opened up with the first five points of set one, three of them coming on service aces. After the Rams got within 9-6, UJ twice built leads of nine points at 20-11 and 21-12.<\/p>\n

An Anna Holen<\/a> (SR\/LaMoure, N.D.) kill put Jamestown ahead 23-17 and it appeared as if the Jimmies were ready to close out the set. Three straight TWU points cut the UJ lead in half, but Holen came back with another kill to put Jamestown at set point. Again TWU put together three straight to get within one and force a Jimmie timeout. A Jamestown attack error made it four in a row for the Rams and tied the set. Jayla Ritter<\/a> (SR\/Forest Lake, Minn.) answered with a kill, then a TWU attack error won the set for the Jimmies.<\/p>\n

The second set got off to a similar start as Jamestown took leads of 5-1 and 9-2. Texas Wesleyan closed the gap to 14-12 after a Bailey Foy kill, then made it a one-point game at 16-15 after Foy and Arianna Alvarado combined for a block. Unfazed, the Jimmies took the next four points, capped off by a Ram attack error, to go ahead 20-16. A pair of Corina Huff<\/a> (SR\/Pequot Lakes, Minn.) kills accounted for the final UJ points and a 2-0 match lead.<\/p>\n

Texas Wesleyan held a slim 4-3 lead in the third before Jamestown turned the tide. A 13-5 run gave the Jimmies a 16-9 lead and an overwhelming shift in momentum. The Rams got no closer than five points down the stretch, and another stellar hitting performance rounded out the win. Five of the final six Jimmie points came via kills, and the team hit .412 on 34 attempts in the set.<\/p>\n

Huff led the way with 13 kills and hit. 407 for the match, while Ritter had 10 kills. Holen ended with eight kills, four aces, and 13 digs.<\/p>\n

Jackie Meiklejohn<\/a> (SR\/Dickey, N.D.) passed out 22 assists and Megan Gaffaney<\/a> (SR\/Jamestown, N.D.) 18. Ellie Holen<\/a> (SO\/LaMoure, N.D.) finished with a team-high 20 digs. Huff had three blocks and Taylor Sabinash<\/a> (SR\/Kensal, N.D.) added two.<\/p>\n

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-CFP RANKINGS<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 You can expect Oklahoma State and Notre Dame to be rooting hard against Alabama, Michigan and Cincinnati this weekend.<\/p>\n

The latest CFP rankings have Georgia still on top, followed by Michigan, Alabama and Cincinnati. The Crimson Tide will take on the Bulldogs in the SEC championship game, Michigan goes against Iowa for the Big Ten crown and Cincinnati will host Houston in the AAC title game.<\/p>\n

The Wolverines moved up with Saturday\u2019s 42-27 win over Ohio State, dropping the Buckeyes from the top 4.<\/p>\n

The Cowboys will be fifth going into their Big 12 championship game against Baylor. The Fighting Irish are sixth, followed by Ohio State, Mississippi, Baylor and Oregon.<\/p>\n

Georgia and Cincinnati are the only unbeaten teams in the rankings. Michigan, Alabama, Oklahoma State, Notre Dame have lost once.<\/p>\n

The final CFP rankings will be released on Sunday.<\/p>\n

LSU, Kelly agree to contract<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 LSU and newly hired coach Brian Kelly have agreed to a 10-year contract worth $95 million plus incentives.<\/p>\n

Kelly has coached at Notre Dame for the past 12 seasons and eclipsed Knute Rockne for career victories with the Fighting Irish.<\/p>\n

Kelly replaces Ed Orgeron (OHR\u2019-juh-rahn), who posted a 15-0 record and a national championship with Tigers just two seasons ago.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Virginia Tech has hired Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry as its next head coach. Pry has been with Penn State since 2014, first as co-defensive coordinator before becoming the sole defensive coordinator in 2016.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Kentucky coach Mark Stoops has agreed to a yet-to-be-finalized contract extension that will keep him with the Wildcats through June 2028. The deal also will continue guaranteed extensions of one year for a seven-win season and two years for a 10-win campaign. Stoops is 58-53 in nine seasons at Lexington.<\/p>\n

NBA…<\/p>\n

\u2014 Brooklyn coughed up a 16-point lead before James Johnson made two free throws with 2.2 seconds left to give the Nets a 112-110 victory over the Knicks. Harden had 34 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, and Durant heated up after a slow start to finish with 27 points and nine assists in Brooklyn\u2019s 13th win in 16 games.<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 The Phoenix Suns have set a club record for consecutive victories by winning a matchup of the NBA\u2019s two best teams.<\/p>\n

Deandre Ayton scored 24 points and the Suns claimed their 17th consecutive win by knocking off the Warriors, 104-96. Chris Paul added 15 points and 11 assists, for the Suns, who also won 17 straight during the 2006-07 season.<\/p>\n

The Suns won despite losing star guard Devin Booker to a left hamstring injury in the second quarter. He had 10 points and two rebounds in 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

Jordan Poole led Golden State with 28 points, but Stephen Curry managed just 12 points on 4 of 21 shooting.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 25 points and Desmond Bane had 23 as the Grizzlies dumped the Raptors, 98-91. Bane made five 3-pointers and Jackson had four for the Grizzlies, who never trailed and led by as many as 17 points in their second straight win.<\/p>\n

\u2014 CJ McCollum had 28 points as the Trail Blazers handed the Pistons their seventh straight loss, 110-92. Ben McLemore had 17 points off the bench after appearing in just six games for Portland this season.<\/p>\n

Bucks sign Cousins<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 DeMarcus Cousins will attempt to boost a Milwaukee Bucks frontcourt that\u2019s missing injured center Brook Lopez. The Bucks announced Tuesday they have signed the 31-year-old, four-time All-Star.<\/p>\n

Lopez hasn\u2019t played since a season-opening victory over the Nets because of a back injury.<\/p>\n

Cousins played a combined 41 games with the Rockets and Clippers last season, averaging 8.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 17.4 minutes.<\/p>\n

Ohio State held the Blue Devils scoreless for the final 4 1\/2 minutes, completing a rally from a 15-point second-half deficit in a 71-66 victory for the Buckeyes. Zed Key scored a career-high 20 points and E.J. Liddell (lih-DEHL’) hit two free throws with 1:06 remaining to give the 5-2 Buckeyes their first lead since early in the first half.<\/p>\n

Liddell finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for Ohio State.<\/p>\n

Wendell Moore Jr. had a team-high 17 points for the Blue Devils, who moved up to No. 1 in the AP poll by defeating Gonzaga over the weekend.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Jaden Ivey scored 18 points and matched his career high with four 3-pointers as second-ranked Purdue hammered Florida State, 93-65. Brandon Newman added 13 points for Purdue, which led by just 59-51 before scoring 12 straight points.<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 Major League Baseball appeared headed to its first work stoppage in 26 years after a pair of brief negotiating sessions Tuesday led to little or no progress.<\/p>\n

The sport\u2019s five-year collective bargaining agreement expires at 11:59 p.m. EST Wednesday. Management is expected to follow with a lockout of the Major League Baseball Players Association.<\/p>\n

Major League Baseball hasn\u2019t had a work stoppage since 1994-95.<\/p>\n

MLB-BRAVES-SNITKER<\/p>\n

Braves extend Snitker<\/p>\n

ATLANTA (AP) \u2014 The Atlanta Braves have exercised the option for the 2024 season on Brian Snitker\u2019s contract, an expected move for the highly popular skipper who had two more years on his current deal.<\/p>\n

The 66-year-old Snitker has been the manager since 2016, guiding the Braves to four straight NL East titles \u2014 capped by this year\u2019s surprising run to the World Series championship.<\/p>\n

Devils lock Hughes into big contract<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 It was a big day for New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes.<\/p>\n

The first overall pick in the 2019 NHL draft returned from a 17-game absence after accepting an eight-year, $64 million contract extension.<\/p>\n

General manager Tom Fitzgerald announced the signing of Hughes, who had been out with a dislocated shoulder.<\/p>\n

The big contract comes despite Hughes\u2019 modest offensive numbers. He has 22 goals and 58 points in 122 career games.<\/p>\n

(AP) \u2014 Authorities say a 15-year-old sophomore opened fire at his Michigan high school, killing three students, including a 16-year-old boy who died in a deputy\u2019s patrol car on the way to a hospital. Eight other people were wounded, some critically. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard says investigators are still trying to determine a motive for Tuesday’s shooting at Oxford High School. He says the shooter isn’t talking. The boy’s father had bought the gun used in the shooting on Friday, Bouchard said, adding that he did not know why. The three students who were killed were 16-year-old Tate Myre, 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana and 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Abortion rights are on the line at the Supreme Court in historic arguments over the landmark ruling nearly 50 years ago that declared a nationwide right to end a pregnancy. The justices on Wednesday will weigh whether to uphold a Mississippi law that bans abortion after 15 weeks and overrule the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Mississippi also is asking the court to overrule the 1992 ruling in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which reaffirmed Roe. The case comes to a court with a 6-3 conservative majority that has been transformed by three appointees of President Donald Trump, who had pledged to appoint justices he said would oppose abortion rights.<\/p>\n

TOKYO (AP) \u2014 Japan’s transportation ministry says it has asked international airlines to stop taking new reservations for all flights arriving in Japan until the end of December. Those who have already made reservations are not affected, although flights may be canceled if there are insufficient passengers. Transit passengers are also unaffected.
