Sports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday<\/p>\n<p>Conference Openers<\/p>\n<p>Women&#8217;s Basketball<\/p>\n<p>VCSU 76 Dickinson State 74<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<p>DICKINSON\u00a0\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/article\/4243\">VCSU<\/a>)\u00a0 \u2013 Valley City State senior <a id=\"rosterLink0\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/2\/3940\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/2\/3940\" data-original-title=\"\">Taryn Dieterle<\/a> sank an inbound jumpshot at the buzzer Saturday\u00a0to lift the Vikings over Dickinson State\u00a0in VCSU&#8217;s conference opener, 76-74.<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Hawks erased a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 74 with seven seconds to go. A bad pass heading out of bounds was saved by <a id=\"rosterLink1\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/2\/3939\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/2\/3939\" data-original-title=\"\">Adriana Torres<\/a> as she knocked the ball off a Dickinson State player to retain possession with 0.7 seconds to go. <a id=\"rosterLink2\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/2\/3936\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/2\/3936\" data-original-title=\"\">Allie Critchley<\/a> then found a double-teamed Dieterle who sank the game-winner as the buzzer sounded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was a great team win for us tonight. I could not be more proud of our grit down the stretch.&#8221; said head coach <a id=\"rosterLink3\" class=\"rosterProfileLink rosterCoachProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/2\/3934\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/2\/3934\" data-original-title=\"\">Vanessa Johnson<\/a>. &#8220;We had so many players step up in big moments and really put our team above themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Valley City State improves to 4-6 overall and opens conference play with a 1-0 record. Dickinson State falls to 0-11 overall and 0-1 in the NSAA.<\/p>\n<p>Four Vikings scored in double figures Saturday, led by <a id=\"rosterLink4\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/2\/3939\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/2\/3939\" data-original-title=\"\">Adriana Torres<\/a> who tied her career-high with\u00a024 points and grabbed seven rebounds. <a id=\"rosterLink5\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/2\/3936\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/2\/3936\" data-original-title=\"\">Allie Critchley<\/a> chipped in a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while also dishing out a team-high four assists. <a id=\"rosterLink6\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/2\/3940\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/2\/3940\" data-original-title=\"\">Taryn Dieterle<\/a> finished with 15 points and <a id=\"rosterLink7\" class=\"rosterProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/2\/4199\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/2\/4199\" data-original-title=\"\">Ashlyn Diemert<\/a> scored 14.<\/p>\n<p>Valley City State shot 39 percent from the field (25-65), 28 percent on 3-pointers (7-25) and 63 percent from the free throw line (19-30). Dickinson State shot 42 percent from the field (28-66), 29 percent on 3&#8217;s (9-31) and a perfect 100 percent on free throws (9-9).<\/p>\n<p>Dickinson State held the rebounding advantage 44-41 but VCSU tallied 10 offensive rebounds for 12 second chance points. Dickinson State also totaled 18 turnovers in the game while VCSU recorded 17 turnovers.<\/p>\n<p>Dickinson State&#8217;s Courtney Olson posted a game-high 26 points while shooting 10-for-14 from the field. Shali Sheridan chipped in 15 points off the bench and Ashlie Watts added 13 points Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UP NEXT:<\/strong> VCSU will host the University of Jamestown on Wednesday, Dec. 29. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Bubble.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Men<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<p>DICKINSON\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/article\/4244\">(VCSU<\/a>)\u00a0 \u2013 Valley City State&#8217;s bench scored 60 of the team&#8217;s 84 points Saturday night as the Viking men&#8217;s basketball team used its depth in a road victory at Dickinson State University.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"rosterLink0\" class=\"rosterProfileLink  \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/1\/4176\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/1\/4176\" data-original-title=\"\">Duoth Gach<\/a> headlined the bench effort with a season-high 27 points, helping the Vikings to an 84-79 win in their North Star Athletic Association conference opener.<\/p>\n<p>Valley City State improves to 8-4 overall this season and is now 1-0 in conference play. Dickinson State drops to 0-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our depth showed tonight,&#8221; said VCSU head coach <a id=\"rosterLink1\" class=\"rosterProfileLink rosterCoachProfileLink \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/1\/3883\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/1\/3883\" data-original-title=\"\">Ryan Montgomery<\/a>. &#8220;Dickinson State is better than their record shows and they gave it their all. Our bench responded and helped us get the conference win on the road, which is really tough to do. We will enjoy this tonight and get back to work on Monday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Valley City State \u2013 the preseason favorite to win the NSAA conference title \u2013 built a 43-33 halftime lead and never trailed in the second half. The Blue Hawks tied the game twice after halftime and cut the lead to one point on three other occasions, but the Vikings always had the answer. A basket by Dickinson&#8217;s Bryce Knox cut VCSU&#8217;s lead to 80-79 in the final minute, but <a id=\"rosterLink2\" class=\"rosterProfileLink  \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/1\/3897\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/1\/3897\" data-original-title=\"\">Joshua Kelly<\/a> went 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the final 24 seconds to clinch the victory.<\/p>\n<p>After the Vikings fell behind 10-2 early in the game, Gach came off the bench to spark a huge Viking rally. Gach scored 16 points over the next four minutes, igniting a 27-8 Viking run that turned the 10-2 deficit into a 29-18 lead.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings finished the game shooting just 37 percent overall (26-71) but shot 38 percent from 3-point range (11-29) and went 21-for-24 on free throws.<\/p>\n<p>Gach made five 3&#8217;s and shot 10-for-16 overall as he led the Vikings with 27 points. <a id=\"rosterLink3\" class=\"rosterProfileLink  \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/1\/4177\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/1\/4177\" data-original-title=\"\">Uhana Ochan<\/a> also had a big game off the bench, finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals. <a id=\"rosterLink4\" class=\"rosterProfileLink  \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/1\/3898\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/1\/3898\" data-original-title=\"\">Eddie Oyet<\/a> posted 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists off the bench, and <a id=\"rosterLink5\" class=\"rosterProfileLink  \" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vcsuvikings.com\/roster\/49\/1\/3893\" data-url=\"\/SIDHelp\/briefBio\/49\/1\/3893\" data-original-title=\"\">Tate Hebrink<\/a> added six points and five assists as part of VCSU&#8217;s 60 bench points. Kelly finished with eight points, going 6-for-6 on free throws.<\/p>\n<p>VCSU recorded 11 steals and forced the Blue Hawks into 19 turnovers. The Vikings turned it over just 13 times.<\/p>\n<p>Cobe Begger and Knox each made five 3&#8217;s for Dickinson State as the duo combined for 41 points to lead the Blue Hawk offense.
