\"\"Valley City (VCPS) Valley City Public Schools Superintendent Josh Johnson says the school district has made an early decision that due to the winter storm in the forecast for Friday, January 14, 2022.<\/p>\n

The News Release States:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have made the early decision to cancel school tomorrow (Friday, January 14th) due to the strong likelihood of the winter weather storm hitting our region tonight and Friday. According to the National Weather Service, we will receive moderate to heavy snow and experience challenging travel conditions in and out of town.<\/p>\n

The timing of this decision has considered the unusual challenges brought about with the last day of the semester Friday, in our school district. With an opportunity to plan ahead, our students and staff will leave the school Thursday, fully prepared to complete the first semester on Tuesday, January 18th. Please know the first day of the second semester will begin on Wednesday, January 19th.<\/p>\n

We hope that the advance notification will allow parents with young children and families to plan ahead for Friday, January 14th. While this early decision is unprecedented in our school district, the circumstances referenced above have led us to make this decision knowing very well things could change in the next 12 hours (it is the weather after all).<\/p>\n

\"\"Valley City\u00a0 (VCPD)\u00a0\u00a0 Valley City police report that on January 12, 2022 police initiated an investigation into a case of suspected child abuse and neglect.<\/p>\n

The child is a student at Valley City Public Schools, so the resource officer began the investigation with the assistance of members of\u00a0 Buffalo Bridges Human Services.\u00a0 It was determined that the child had been assaulted by the father at a residence in Valley City.<\/p>\n

Upon completion\u00a0 of the investigation and consultation with the Barnes County State’s Attorney’s Office, a determination was made to arrest the father, for Child Abuse, a Class C felony.<\/p>\n

31 year old, Raul E.Canales Fuentes was arrested without any further incident.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A man accused of killing two co-workers at a North Dakota plastics factory in November will undergo a mental health exam to determine whether he is competent to stand trial. Cass County Judge Wade Webb signed a commitment order Wednesday so that Anthony Reese Jr. can be evaluated at the North Dakota State Hospital as requested by his attorneys. Radio station KFGO reports that the 35-year-old Moorhead, Minnesota, man is charged with three counts of murder for the Nov. 17 shooting deaths of 43-year-old Richard Pittman and Pittman\u2019s pregnant girlfriend, 32-year-old April Carbone, at Melet Plastics, a Fargo manufacturer that is also known as Composite America. Reese remains in custody on a $2 million bond.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 An Illinois appellate court has set aside a decision by state regulators that would allow the Dakota Access oil pipeline to double capacity to 1.1 million barrels daily. The appellate court ordered the Illinois Commerce Commission to review the public need for the project that moves North Dakota oil to a shipping point in Illinois. The court says regulators must also consider regulatory violations in Pennsylvania by one of the pipeline\u2019s owners. The court ordered Illinois regulators to issue a new decision within 11 months, while restricting the pipeline\u2019s capacity to 570,000 barrels per day.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A pipeline operator that plans to transport carbon dioxide to North Dakota for disposal will partner with an ammonia plant developer to pick up its emissions from a Grand Forks facility. Pipeline developer Summit Carbon Solutions and ammonia plant developer Northern Plains Nitrogen announced the partnership this week. Northern Plains Nitrogen\u2019s plant will supply low-carbon, nitrogen-based fertilizer products to farmers in the northern United States and Canada. The company expects to annually capture 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Summit plans to inject the ammonia plant\u2019s emissions into rocks deep underground in Oliver and Mercer counties where its pipeline system will end.<\/p>\n

In world and national news…<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The Supreme Court has stopped the Biden administration from enforcing a requirement that employees at large businesses be vaccinated against COVID-19 or undergo weekly testing and wear a mask on the job. At the same time, the court is allowing the administration to proceed with a vaccine mandate for most health care workers in the U.S. The court\u2019s orders Thursday during a spike in coronavirus cases was a mixed bag for the administration\u2019s efforts to boost the vaccination rate. The court\u2019s conservative majority concluded the administration overstepped its authority by seeking to impose the Occupational Safety and Health Administration\u2019s vaccine-or-test rule on U.S. businesses with at least 100 employees. More than 80 million people would have been affected.<\/p>\n

(AP) Teachers around the U.S. are confronting classrooms where as many as half of students are absent. That’s because they have been exposed to COVID-19 or their families kept them at home out of concern about the surging coronavirus. The widespread absences have only added to the difficulty of keeping students on track in yet another pandemic-disrupted school year. Tabatha Rosproy is a teacher in Olathe, Kansas, and the 2020 national Teacher of the Year. She says teachers often have to reteach material when absent kids return. Some of the country\u2019s biggest school systems report absentee rates around 20% or slightly more. Some individual schools are seeing far higher percentages.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 New York City Mayor Eric Adams is considering allowing the nation\u2019s largest school district to return to some form of virtual instruction as the city weathers a wave of coronavirus cases. That would be a reversal from his pledge a week ago to keep children in schools. Adams said at a news conference Thursday that he still believes the safest place for children to be is in school but that there are a substantial number of children missing classes. The mayor says the city will not see a dispute like in Chicago, where the nation\u2019s third-largest school district canceled five days of classes because of disagreements with the teachers\u2019 union over COVID-19 safety protocols.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 All but acknowledging defeat, President Joe Biden now says he\u2019s \u201cnot sure\u201d his elections and voting rights legislation can pass Congress this year. He spoke at the Capitol Thursday after a key fellow Democrat, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, dramatically announced her refusal to go along with changing Senate rules to muscle past a Republican filibuster blockade. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is still hoping to use Senate procedural rules to bypass a filibuster and force the legislation to the floor for a debate. But the Democrats still lack the support within their own party to overhaul the rules and pass the bill with a simple majority.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Stewart Rhodes, the founder and leader of the far-right Oath Keepers militia group, has been arrested and charged with seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Justice Department announced the charges against Rhodes on Thursday. He is the highest-ranking member of an extremist group to be arrested in the deadly siege. It is the first time the Justice Department has brought a seditious conspiracy charge in connection with the attack on the Capitol. Ten other people also were charged with seditious conspiracy in connection with the attack on Jan. 6, 2021, when authorities said members of the extremist group came to Washington intent on stopping the certification of President Joe Biden\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n

(AP)\u00a0 Federal authorities say a South Dakota man charged this week with storming the U.S. Capitol last year performed rap songs about the riot in videos posted on his YouTube channel. A relative told the FBI that Billy Knutson was a rapper who sold his music online and had posted on social media that he was at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The FBI says a surveillance video showed Knutson enter the Capitol by climbing through a broken window. Court records show a federal magistrate judge in South Dakota ordered Knutson released after his initial court appearance on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The Republican National Committee says it is planning a rules change that would force presidential candidates seeking the party\u2019s nomination to sign a pledge saying they will not participate in any debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates. If ultimately enacted and enforced, it would fundamentally change the way that presidential elections have been conducted in the country for decades. Former President Donald Trump spent years accusing the nonprofit of unfair treatment. In a letter to the commission, RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel voiced frustration with its response to a list of complaints, including about its selection of moderators. The Commission on Presidential Debates says it deals directly with candidates who qualify for participation in its debates.<\/p>\n
