Kim Koppelman, announced that he will <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">not seek re-election, following the District 13 Republican Endorsing Convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"> He issued the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">following statement:\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cI announced last evening, before the vote, that I would not run for the Republican nomination in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the June Primary election, although I believe I could win such a race.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">This is not about me.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">I <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">have always believed that one should run for office in order to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">do<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">something, not in order to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">be\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Having served for many years and accomplished much, I had seriously considered retiring from <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the Legislature this year and it was only the strong encouragement from constituents and<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">legislative colleagues which prompted me to throw my hat in the ring, once more.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">I even <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">considered withdrawing as a candidate before last night\u2019s meeting, but did not feel that would <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">have been fair to the many who gave of their time and money to attend and support me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cTorey and I are at peace with the decision to retire and are grateful, beyond words, for the love <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and support of so many in West Fargo and throughout North Dakota.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Representing our <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">community and state in the Legislature has truly been a labor of love and we now look forward <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to completing my term as Speaker of the House and to the next chapter, whatever the Good<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Lord may have in store.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The North Dakota House of Representatives elected Rep. Kim Koppelman (R, West Fargo) as <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Speaker of the House in 2020. He had emerged earlier from a three-way race in the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Republican caucus before being elected by the full House of Representatives. He is the first<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Speaker in state history to hail from West Fargo and has served in many other leadership roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Rep. Koppelman was first elected in 1994. The long-time Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">he previously chaired the Constitutional Revision and Administrative Rules Committees. He <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">was elected the national Chairman of the Council of State Governments (CSG), made up of all <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">three branches of government in all 50 states, in 2008. He currently chairs the Interim Judiciary <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Committee and serves on Legislative Management, the Budget Section, the Legislative <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Procedures and Arrangements Committee, the Juvenile Justice Commission and the Children\u2019s <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Cabinet. Nationally, he chairs the CSG Shared Legislation Committee as well as the Civil\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Justice Task Force and the Regulatory State Reform Committee of the American Legislative <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Exchange Council. He also serves on the Executive Committees of the Council of State<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Governments and the Midwest Legislative Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Speaker Koppelman will complete his term of office in December.
