(AP) \u2014 A furry critter in a western Pennsylvania town has predicted six more weeks of winter during an annual Groundhog Day celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UqZnhsUakIU\">gathered Thursday at Gobbler\u2019s Knob<\/a>&nbsp;as members of Punxsutawney Phil\u2019s \u201cinner circle\u201d summoned the groundhog from his tree stump at dawn to learn if he has seen his shadow \u2014 and they say he did. According to folklore, if he sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn\u2019t, spring comes early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cinner circle\u201d is a group of local dignitaries who are responsible for planning the events, as well as feeding and caring for Phil himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/groundhog-day-punxsutawney-pennsylvania-coronavirus-pandemic-d4a183fdd599322fb9b23a5cb2147f33\">annual event in Punxsutawney<\/a>, about 65 miles (105 kilometers) northeast of Pittsburgh, originated from a German legend about a furry rodent. The gathering annually attracts thousands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration compared Punxsutawney Phil\u2019s forecast to the national weather the last 10 years and found \u201con average, Phil has gotten it right 40% of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, Phil&#8217;s prediction came during a week when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/weather-disaster-planning-and-response-arkansas-climate-environment-texas-43eac24afe75fa5b0420959b0408b43d\">a mess of ice, sleet and snow<\/a>&nbsp;has lingered across much of the southern U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to records dating back to 1887, Phil has predicted winter more than 100 times. Ten years were lost because no records were kept, organizers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/groundhog-day-punxsutawney-prediction-85527080ccef649d2807bfa4804fec25\">2021<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pennsylvania-groundhog-day-punxsutawney-c6179b6609274d43eb371363d2d816b5\">2022 forecasts<\/a>&nbsp;also called for six more weeks of winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Punxsutawney Phil may be the most famous groundhog seer, he\u2019s certainly not the only one.
