Michael Turner, R-Ohio, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That includes, he said, \u201chow this virus was created and, specifically, whether it was a natural occurrence or was the result of a lab-related event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The order to declassify focused on intelligence related to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-covid-origins-lab-leak-bc0a2eda898c22219e57921ac700d4ec\">China\u2019s Wuhan Institute of Virology<\/a>, citing \u201cpotential links\u201d between the research that was done there and the outbreak of COVID-19, which the World Health Organization&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/united-nations-michael-pence-religion-travel-virus-outbreak-52e12ca90c55b6e0c398d134a2cc286e\">declared a pandemic<\/a>&nbsp;on March 11, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. intelligence agencies are divided over whether a lab leak or a spillover from animals is the likely source of the deadly virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts say the true origin of the coronavirus pandemic, which has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-covid-death-toll-one-million-7cefbd8c3185fd970fd073386e442317\">killed more than 1 million Americans<\/a>, may not be known for many years \u2014 if ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTransparency is a cornerstone of our democracy,\u201d said Rep. Jim Himes, of Connecticut, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, during the debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by Republicans, the focus on the virus origins comes as the House launched a select committee with a hearing earlier in the week delving into theories about how the pandemic started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It offers a rare moment of bipartisanship despite the often heated rhetoric about the origins of the coronavirus and the questions about the response to the virus by U.S. health officials, including former top health adviser&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/anthony-fauci-announces-retirement-7efdacac6a9ff7aa6e2f870b551fe508\">Anthony Fauci<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation from Sen.
