{"id":278302,"date":"2023-12-13T09:08:51","date_gmt":"2023-12-13T15:08:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=278302"},"modified":"2023-12-13T09:08:51","modified_gmt":"2023-12-13T15:08:51","slug":"norma-hoiland-sunday-december-10-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=278302","title":{"rendered":"Norma Hoiland &#8211; Sunday, December 10, 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Norma Hoiland, age 93, of Valley City, ND, died Sunday, December 10th at SMP Health-St. Raphael in Valley City. &nbsp;A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, December 19th at the chapel at SMP Health-St. Raphael. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the chapel. &nbsp;Inurnment will be in Woodbine Cemetery in the spring. &nbsp;An online guestbook will be available at www.lerudmathias.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norma Elaine Hicks, the third daughter of Erl and Rosalia (Smith) Hicks, was born October 1, 1938 near Page, ND. &nbsp;She attended Minnie Lake School through the eighth grade, then attended Pillsbury High School, graduating as Valedictorian. &nbsp;Following graduation, she went to work at F.W. Woolworth in Valley City where she worked her way up from a clerk to bookkeeper. &nbsp;During her time at Woolworth\u2019s, she met her future husband, Harold Hoiland. &nbsp;They were married March 11, 1954 in Devils Lake, ND. &nbsp;They moved to Wahpeton so Harold could attend the Wahpeton School of Science for two years. &nbsp;They returned to Valley City where Norma again worked for F.W. Woolworth as a bookkeeper. Harold passed away June 7, 1988 and is buried in Woodbine Cemetery. &nbsp;Norma loved to travel and did so with her sister Ardith and brother-in-law Russell Brudevold. &nbsp;She traveled with her younger sister Bonnie Swanson to England, Scotland and Wales. &nbsp;While in England, they visited their maternal grandparents farm and toured the countryside. &nbsp;For years Norma helped with the North Dakota State Science Olympiad at North Dakota State University doing what ever she could but primarily as a calligrapher. &nbsp;Norma was a very good artist working with oil paints, charcoal and metal scratch art. &nbsp;In later years, she sold her house and moved to an apartment in the Elks Building, later the Rudolph and finally to the Sheyenne Care Center. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norma is survived by several nieces and nephews: &nbsp;Patricia (Pat) Martineau, Joan Ohlgren, Roger Ohlgren and Richard \u201cRick\u201d (Vanita) Ohlgren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; sisters, Ardith Brudevold, Geraldine \u201cJeri\u201d Johnson and Bonnie Swanson; brothers-in-law, Jerry Johnson, Russell Brudevold and Richard \u201cDick\u201d Swanson; two nephews, Clay Hicks and Ronald \u201cRon\u201d Ohlgren.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Norma Hoiland, age 93, of Valley City, ND, died Sunday, December 10th at SMP Health-St. Raphael in Valley City. &nbsp;A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, December 19th at the chapel at SMP Health-St. Raphael.
