MADISON, S.D.\u2014<\/strong> The University of Jamestown football team did not allow an offensive touchdown Saturday afternoon, but it was the Dakota State University defense that accounted for the Trojans’ points as the Jimmies fell 16-6 at Brian Kern Family Stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DSU had the first scoring chance of the game after forcing the Jimmies to go three-and-out on their first possession. The Trojans attempted a 36-yard field goal, but the kick by Carson Sauseda was wide left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With 1:35 left in the opening quarter, UJ took over at their own 20-yard line following a DSU punt. Two running plays got Jamestown out to the 31-yard line, and then on first down,\u00a0Nick Martinez<\/a>\u00a0fumbled. Kaden Eng scooped up the ball and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown. The extra point made it 7-0 with 12 seconds left in the first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jimmies’ final drive of the first half started at their own 35-yard line with 1:55 on the clock. Following a 17-yard pass from\u00a0Johnny Grann<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0Ethan Hoffman<\/a>, UJ had a first down at the DSU 7-yard line. Two incompletions brought up third down, and on another pass attempt, Grann was intercepted by Deveon Moses for a touchback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jamestown’s second drive of the third quarter chewed up nearly 8 minutes off the clock, covering 66 yards on 14 plays. An 8-yard rush by\u00a0Colton Schneider<\/a>\u00a0on first down set the Jimmies up for second and goal from the 1. DSU stopped back-to-back rushing attempts for no gain, and on fourth down, Grann’s pass for Hoffman was incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early in the fourth quarter, the Jimmies found the end zone.\u00a0Tanner Chaffee<\/a>\u00a0intercepted a Trojan pass at the DSU 37, returning it 30 yards to give Jamestown an extremely short field. On third-and-goal from the 8, Grann connected with Hoffman to bring UJ within 7-6. The point-after attempt by\u00a0Aanon Peterson<\/a>\u00a0was blocked by Caleb Dwyer, and Eng returned the ball 97 yards for a two-point defensive point after touchdown, making the score 9-6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The teams traded punts on the next seven drives, and Jamestown got the ball on their own 38 with 3:12 left. On the first play of the drive, Grann was intercepted by Moses for the second time. Moses took the ball 60 yards the other way and the extra point made it 16-6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Down by 10, the Jimmies started at their own 43 and quickly got into DSU territory. A 22-yard pass from Grann to\u00a0Isaiah Roebuck<\/a>\u00a0on 3rd<\/sup>\u00a0and 17 put the ball at the DSU 7, and a 5-yard pass to Hoffman had UJ on the verge of the end zone once again. On 4th<\/sup>\u00a0down, Grann’s pass to Roebuck was incomplete, and the Trojans ran out the clock for the victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grann threw for 230 yards and completed 23 of 49 passes. He also carried 9 times for 19 yards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dawson Schmidt<\/a>\u00a0and Hoffman both had four receptions, followed by Roebuck and\u00a0Erastus Antsino<\/a>\u00a0with three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jed Rantz<\/a>\u00a0had 15 tackles and\u00a0Ezra Belingheri<\/a>\u00a08 to lead the defense. Belingheri,\u00a0Zach Mueller<\/a>, and\u00a0Trayten Johnson<\/a>\u00a0all had a quarterback sack.\u00a0Ray Benners<\/a>\u00a0had 5 tackles and along with\u00a0Spencer Russell<\/a>, had 2 pass breakups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
