The memorial service for O\u2019Neil Oppegaard, 91, Valley City, ND will be 2:30 pm Saturday, January 18, 2024, at Faith Lutheran Church, Valley City.  Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.  Burial will be in the spring in Bethlehem Cemetery, rural Litchville, ND.  He passed away January 13, at Mercy Hospital, Valley City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Neil Delano Oppegaard was born on March 31, 1933, the son of Olaf and Marie (Strand) Oppegaard of Litchville.  After completing his schooling, he began to work for a carpenter in town and learned the skills of carpentry.  O\u2019Neil moved to Valley City and began working for Berge Construction and later worked for Wick Construction.  He also spent several years building homes.  O\u2019Neil retired after spending several years working at Valley City State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was united in marriage to Janice Olson on February 27, 1960, in Valley City at First Lutheran Church.  His gift to his wife was a new home he had built on the hillside.  He later built another home near a school for Elizabeth to attend which was across the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Neil, later in retirement, took classes in wood turning.  He spent many hours in his shop making many items consisting of clocks, vases, pens and various other items.  He gave these items away to family and friends. Another pastime for O\u2019Neil was the lakes and fishing.  He taught his wife and daughter to fish, and they liked it as well.  The family spent over 50 years on Toad Lake in Minnesota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was a past member of the National Guard. O\u2019Neil was a longtime member of the Eagles and Faith Lutheran Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Wallace & Marvin and sisters Evelyn, Marlene & Nordis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Neil is survived by his wife Janice and daughter Elizabeth, along with numerous nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Faith Lutheran Church, Bethlehem Cemetery or a memorial of your choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
