{"id":291952,"date":"2025-04-01T07:58:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T12:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=291952"},"modified":"2025-04-09T08:10:16","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T13:10:16","slug":"us-holocaust-memorial-museum-scholars-to-visit-uj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=291952","title":{"rendered":"US Holocaust Memorial Museum Scholars UJ April 8"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The University of Jamestown\u2019s Department of Social Science is honored to host scholars affiliated with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushmm.org\/\">United States Holocaust Memorial Museum<\/a>&nbsp;on campus on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 in DeNault Auditorium &nbsp;to engage with students, faculty, and campus communities throughout the state.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/UJ-holocaust32525.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/UJ-holocaust32525.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-291953\" width=\"475\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/UJ-holocaust32525.jpg 800w, http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/UJ-holocaust32525-300x215.jpg 300w, http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/UJ-holocaust32525-768x550.jpg 768w, http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/UJ-holocaust32525-244x175.jpg 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This special programming, sponsored by UJ and the Museum\u2019s Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, will feature two public events.&nbsp;<strong>Both events are free, but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uj.edu\/events\/physical-and-social-places-of-exclusion-in-nazi-germany-and-the-great-plains\/\">registration<\/a>&nbsp;is required for online participation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Physical and Social Places of Exclusion in Nazi Germany and the Great Plains<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>11:00 AM \u2013 12:30 PM: \u201cAntisemitism, Racism, and Religion on the Road to Extermination, In and Beyond the Holocaust\u201d<\/li><li>5:00 PM \u2013 6:30 PM: \u201cThe Holocaust and Survival, In and Beyond Nazi Germany: Teaching Challenging Topics in the Classroom\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an extraordinary opportunity for our campus and community,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uj.edu\/about\/faculty-and-staff-directory\/marc-carpenter\/\">Marc James Carpenter, PhD<\/a>, UJ Assistant Professor of History. \u201cThe Holocaust is not just a historical event; it is a lens through which we can examine the dangers of antisemitism, hatred, racism, and indifference in the past and what it means for us today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event will feature four distinguished scholars:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Edward Westermann, author of \u201cHitler\u2019s Ostkrieg and the Indian Wars\u201d and \u201cDrunk on Genocide,\u201d whose work explores the intersections of violence, ideology, and culture.<\/li><li>Kierra Crago-Schneider, an expert on Holocaust refugees and resilience, with extensive experience in museums and public history.<\/li><li>Rebecca Carter-Chand, whose research focuses on the role of religious institutions during the Holocaust.<\/li><li>Elise Boxer, a scholar specializing in Indigenous studies and the intersections of genocide and colonialism.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the public events, Dr. Westermann and Dr. Crago-Schneider will visit UJ classrooms, offering students and faculty the opportunity to engage directly with their expertise. Classroom discussion topics will include Holocaust history, genocide studies, public memory, and strategies for addressing challenging subjects in educational settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are the smallest institution the Mandel Center has ever partnered with for programming like this,\u201d Carpenter added. \u201cIt\u2019s an incredible opportunity to foster dialogue, especially in rural communities like ours. For those interested in learning more, please get in touch with Marc Carpenter at 701-252-3467 ext. 5640 or marc.carpenter@uj.edu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Concert Featuring Shostakovich\u2019s Piano Trio Op. 67<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In conjunction with these events, the UJ will also host a concert featuring Dmitri Shostakovich\u2019s Piano Trio Op. 67 on Sunday, April 6, at 4:00 PM in the lobby of the Reiland Fine Arts building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This piece, composed in 1944 during a time of great turmoil in the Soviet Union, reflects the complex emotions surrounding the Holocaust and the oppressive regime of Joseph Stalin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShostakovich\u2019s Piano Trio Op. 67 serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of oppression,\u201d said John Clodfelter, Assistant Professor of Music, who will present the concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough this music, we can explore the themes of suffering and survival that resonate deeply with the discussions we will have during the Holocaust programming.\u201d Clodfelter will be joined by violinist Laura Prokopyk, Concertmaster of the Missouri Valley Chamber Orchestra, and Dr. Erik Anderson, Full Professor and Chair of the Division at Minot State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concert is also free and open to the public.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Jamestown\u2019s Department of Social Science is honored to host scholars affiliated with the&nbsp;United States Holocaust Memorial Museum&nbsp;on campus on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 in DeNault Auditorium &nbsp;to engage with students, faculty, and campus communities throughout the state.
