(AP) \u2013 North Dakota State University researchers<br \/>\nare growing seeds from the state\u2019s only known subalpine fir tree,<br \/>\nto see if the species can become a part of the state\u2019s landscape.<br \/>\nJamestown resident Dennis Roaldson owns the tree.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0He says he brought the young fir from Montana in 1980. He didn\u2019t know what it was until City Forester Vern Quam identified it years later.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Roaldson\u00a0says when he entered the tree in the state Forest Service\u2019s Champion Tree program \u2013 which recognizes the largest of each species in the state \u2013 he found out it was the only subalpine fir in North Dakota.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NDSU researcher Todd West says officials want to know if the<br \/>\nnon-native tree is suitable for widespread use in North Dakota, to<br \/>\nincrease diversity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0JAMESTOWN, N.D.
