(CSi)\u2013 <\/b>Today, U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp, a breast cancer survivor, was presented with the Courage Award by Tracy\u2019s Kids, a therapy program for children with cancer. Each year, the award is presented to a public person who exemplifies the strength, dignity and perseverance necessary to face the daily challenges imposed by cancer and its treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTracy\u2019s Kids has been and continues to be a source of strength and bravery for so many children fighting to overcome cancer, and I\u2019m honored to receive this award,\u201d said Sen. Heitkamp. \u201cTwelve years ago, I beat breast cancer. While that journey was deeply personal, I was able to find strength at the most challenging times because of the support and love of my family and friends. Touring Children\u2019s National on Monday, I viewed the \u2018Wall of Heroes\u2019 where past patients reflected and shared their thoughts. Almost all of them noted their visits to the art room were some of the best memories from their time there \u2013 a clear sign of the positive difference this program is making in children\u2019s lives. I\u2019d like to thank Tracy\u2019s Kids for its tremendous work and I know it will continue to improve lives and help kids beat this disease for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tracy\u2019s Kids is a pediatric art therapy program that helps young cancer patients and their families manage the emotional stress and strain of cancer and its treatment.\u00a0 The organization aims to make sure children and their families are prepared to fight cancer, and also ready for when they are cancer free. In 1991, Tracy\u2019s Kids began at the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University Children\u2019s Medical Center.<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On her tour Monday at their Children\u2019s National Medical Center location, Heitkamp was joined by Founder and Chairman Matt Gerson, and President and CEO of Children\u2019s National Dr. Kurt Newman.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, D.C.
